The clocks have changed, bonfire night's over, the night's are colder (as is the lake!), November's here, it's Sunday only racing, and the final series of the season has started - the Winter Trophy.
Compared to the last few weeks, there was a good breeze - enough for Roy and Kayla to crash and burn, but then so did Alan Nicholson in his Vario, and John and Joan Hardie in their RS200.
Rich has been out snapping again and uploaded a few pics of the day (well about 600!). Click here to see his handywork.
The results for the series are calculated on a personal handicap basis so those that haven't sailed for a while tend to have a beneficial handicap at first, but the system will catch up with them!

We held our annual bonfire night social, which, with a little help from all those attending was as spectacular as ever. About 50 members and guests came along with display fireworks which were all set off under the careful supervision of the Nicholson family (with the help of Martin the arsonist?!). Following last year, Dave couldn't hear for a week so Pauline advised him to wear earplugs. Word is he is enjoying the silence so much he's going to keep them in!!!
Kayla and Gary manned the galley and provided hot dogs, burgers and toffee apples (sponsored by a local dentist?)
Hi there all you in autumnal Europe. Can't resist telling you all how yesterday went.
Andrew got me an invitation to Balmain SC. It's the oldest sailing club in the harbour (1856) and was holding its annual regatta weekend . There were classes for historic skiffs, historic working and wooden boats and a class A & B for yachts. There was also a class for " any boat that can carry a load equivalent to a sack of potatoes, powered by oars" !!
To cut to the chase I WAS ON THE PODIUM !! I sailed as starboard genoa trimmer in class B and after 2hrs 10 mins came home 3rd out of a class of 26. Wind was around F4 and we sailed in polo shirts all afternoon, finishing after 2hrs 20 mins sailing around the buoys (pronounced booeys!) & I have pictures of the bridge to prove it.
We leave tomorrow and return to life in sunny Cumbria without Jessica. I predict tears and claw marks in the tarmac !!
Pete Nuttall
On Sunday the weather was the opposite - bright sunshine but no wind. The OD provided some impetus to the crews to launch by going to the far shore and setting a line. Without a lot of enthusiasm they eventually followed and two very slow races later they returned.
Overall Steve and Ruth held on to their lead to win the series from Nigel and Cecile.

On Saturday, sun and rain with the wind forcing its way either side of Sale Fell provided some interesting conditions for the final weekend series of the season. Robbie D in an RS400 had super lightweight crew Ethan on board and quickly pulled into the lead, never looking back. The GPs were led by Dave and Lynn Lawson, and the most exciting bit for the rescue crews was when Dave and Sarah Nicholson capsized (photos to be revealed!)
The forecast for Sunday was miserable, and when the sailors arrived it looked as if it was to be right - it was raining cats and dogs, the wind was blowing away from the clubhouse so that no-one could tell how windy it really was! Lynn Lawson seemed to be leading the way in terms of being positive about going sailing, while everyone else continued to watch the rain and contemplate. But the OD was convinced that there would be some starters if he ventured out to set a line, so he did. Of course, he was right. The sailors casually got changed to avoid getting wet rigging their boats (what are sailors like?), and set out for the start. The conditions were nothing like that expected. The patches of black water rarely had enough power to enable planing conditions. In the handicap fleet, Scumper (with Robbie D crewing) banged a corner on the right hand side of the course, and reached the windward mark with William and Lesley closely on his tail. The unusual conditions enabled William to pass to leeward of Scumper and take the lead until the penultimate beat (when the water was flattened by a downpour) when Scumper was lifted just sufficiently to get round the mark ahead of William. Both boats went their separate ways on the next run, but Scumper kept the lead when he had water on William. With a final 100 yds to the finish William immediately tacked off on to port. One final tack into the finish line and William crossed the line inches ahead.
The GPs were lead around the course by Dave and Lynn, with Mike and Eric second
After a lunchtime hearing about Herb's speeding fine, several boats called it a day (not because of Herb!) as the wind had surprisingly continued to ease.

Problem is, not sure whether we're relating to Mark or his caravan!
For anyone that watched an item on this week's Antiques Roadshow about a diary and skeleton keys kept by a prisoner of war, it may be of interest that they belonged to our very own former commodore and trustee, the late Harry Kirk.
Sunday again saw a race to the south end of the lake, but this time all the boats set off together. By the time they reached buoy 12 it looked like Neil has the race sown up - but this is Bass! The wind favoured those at the back of the fleet and they all came round buoy 6 more or less together. Neil and Adrian Tattersall with Tim Smart (RYA) then took each other high on the reach down to buoy 2, allowing Howard Green & Ian Preston (Leigh & Lowton) to get through into the lead. There was some tight covering up the next beat, but Howard then overshot the windward mark and dropped back to third. He nearly took back a place coming to the finish line, but Adrian beat him by a foot. After more than an hours sailing, all boats finished within a minute of each other
In the final race, the OD again took advantage of the southerly breeze, but this time only sent the boats half way down the lake. Neil took the lead, but the others were not far behind - Adrian and Howard were less than 10 seconds behind at the end. Robin and Keith had their own match racing competition with Keith managing to come home first.

Saturday morning saw the final training session of the Autumn. Well done to Dave, Sue and Lewis Tyson, Kevin & James Finnegan, Steve & Gill Sharp, Thomas Bainbridge, Max Statter, Martin Parker who all passed Level 1 and to Dave Todhunter who passed Level 2. Shelby Tyson also took part and thinks she is a much better sailor that her mother because she does not get so many bruises! Also in the photo below are Eric Smith, Richard Rhodes and Nigel Lewis who delivered the training and assessment and Bass's rescue man Josh who is always at the front of any photo!
Steve Hunt won both handicap races to take the Skiddaw trophy, with Ian Macpherson and Tony Flynn the only others to brave both races.

Roy Blackburn took the lead on Saturday, well for the greatest number of capsizes. For the first race of the October series, Shunty and Robbie D were a bit too eager at the start and had to return, giving Roy the chance to break free. At the windward mark Roy hoisted the kite, headed for the wrong mark and went for swim No 1!
Race 2 had both Roy and John Halliday swimming (and Roy took great pains to point out they capsized more than once). Robin again pulled away from Steve and won the race, but they they enjoyed it so much they each went for a jolly after the race to take advantage of the excellent reaching conditions.
Sunday's forecast for wind and rain was wrong! The wind seemed to fill in before racing started and the fleets had a good beat up to mark 7, but by the 2nd beat the wind had eased and the 3rd beat had next to no wind resulting in several retirements and Neil losing a place back to William on the final leg as the wind filled back in. On a positive note Roy didn't capsize!
Hugh was doing a little coaching with Marty Wright, but Dave and Sarah Nicholson showed the way with a convincing win.
The pennant race in the afternoon was postponed until the wind came back again about 1515hrs, but it was accompanied by further showers and there weren't that many takers, and even fewer finishers. That old pot hunter Shunty took the trophy of the Bass Burgee. Keith Thomas showed that perseverance pays, because he won the Flying Enterprise trophy as 1st F15
While we were all drifting the Denwood sisters were on the Great North run - each completed it in 2:49:34. Don't forget to sponsor them so they can hit their £3k target for West Cumbria Hospice at Home

Many congratulations to Telf and Lucy on the birth of twins Alfie and Holly late on Monday evening
5 mins of fame! Well that's what everyone seemed to want on Saturday afternoon. First there was the OD that decided to 'follow the guidelines' and start the F15 first much to the confusion of the handicap fleet, and then kept everyone sailing for ever and a bit more. However, by the time the second race started the wind had picked up and the capsizing had begun.
Toggle was in the driving seat for the second race until after claiming water at the leeward mark (with the unusual hail 'Water 'cos Toggle's coming through!') from William he promptly hit it, did a turn and capsized. It must be said that one of his earlier attempts at gybing looked very dodgy, but he got away with it.
Toddy swam to the rescue after spotting an RS Feva that had been overturned for some time. He jumped out of his mirror and must have covered 100 yds in front crawl only to find Jonathon had already been taken ashore with a suspected dislocated big toe! Toddy did get back to his boat and finished the race.
There seemed to be many more casualties throughout the race, but it was good to have a bit of wind. A couple of anxious (not) parents watched the excitement from the comfort of the clubhouse, and when Sam Hall headed for the shore it is reported that there was the unexpected exclamation 'oh good, we can go home early!'
On Sunday, the Bass micro climate struck again. Wind everywhere but on the lake. The first race was delayed until a good southerly moved in tempting the OD to set 7 as the windward mark, but by the time the race started the wind had faded. The sweepstake for the time to the windward mark was won by Lesley, who guessed 30 mins against an actual time of 26 mins. The mirrors' course was shortened at 7, but the others had to make their way back to B which took another 30 mins. Of course the wind filled in a little after the finish, but it didn't stay and the afternoon race was held in semi drifting conditions. The OD was a little more cautious with the course in the afternoon to give himself a better opportunity to shorten as necessary which he did (and then the wind filled in again!)

The fleet challenge C brought out a number of new faces to racing including Sam Evans and Jonathan Connor. With racing being held as three (short?) races each day there's the opportunity to practice starts, and the added bonus of personal handicapping (rather than fleet handicaps) so it's possible to get a couple of good results in before the computer catches up with you!
Jonathon was overnight leader and was tempted to forgo work to maintain that lead, but he didn't. He was of course doubly handicapped by having Hugh in the front end on Saturday (not good in light winds!)
Sunday started light and drizzly, and then the wind disappeared so there was no racing until after lunch when OD Ian Macpherson got all three races in, but the wind never seemed to settle down. Perhaps if the results had been calculated after race 5 no-one need have sailed the last race.
The results seemed a bit challenging to Sam's dad as he didn't realise Sam had won the series (and that he'd have to come to the annual dinner to collect his prize!)
Anyone keeping an eye on the webcam (now that's it's working again) may have noticed the happy wedding couple having a photo session. Talking of which, congratulations to Grahamo and Sarah on their recent engagement. No doubt last night's party left a few people feeling very sorry for themselves today!

The final race of the Night Jar B Thursday night series managed to be squeezed in before the evenings get too dark. Six boats entered the final race in very light winds. The OD set a short course but even so there was much debate about when to shorten the course as darkness was falling very quickly but if anything the wind was getting stronger! The race was won by Dave Todhunter in his Mirror, however Joe Watkins's second place was sufficient for him to pip Eric Smith at the post and take the series - well done Joe!

While the Tinker fleet held one of their annual rallies at Bass, some of our RS fleet ventured to Ullswater for their RS open. Robbie D and Toggle came out best from the competitive (if small) fleet. Counting four results from five races sailed they won with 6 points (inc 3 1sts) from local helm Neil ? who also had 6 points. Scumper and Zefer were 3rd and William and Lesley 4th. A busy, frustrating, (the 400s started behind and had to sail through the fleet of 28 RS200s) but enjoyable day's racing.
Sunday - A glorious day for sailing - a true southerly and sunshine. Club fleets endured an asymmetric windward leeward course (good for the asymmetrics, but Rhonwen wasn't impressed in her laser!) and were home and well through their lunch before the tinkers finished their race.
The breeze eased a little for the afternoon, but the course that Shunty set BEFORE coming ashore for lunch didn't prove to be the best thing since sliced bread (The best leg was from the finish to the shore!). Robbie D couldn't stay away from the water and took out the Topaz with Ethan. Old habits die hard, and the sail ended with a capsize, but Toggle was nowhere to be seen!
The tinkers' travellers trophy went, as ever to David Warren. Malcolm Ellwood was 2nd and Dennis Aldred 3rd
2 Up Trophy for the season went to Stewart and Barbara Warren, and the most improved helm was Nigel Marshall

Apart from a taster session on what must have been one of the wettest day's of the summer, the OD (or was it Herb) thought better of it when it came to racing. The wind and waves had picked up, and coupled with the rain, apathy set in and racing was abandoned. Of course the wind did ease, and the rain eventually stop, but by then it was too late. However, as you may have noticed from the webcam, Steve Hunt did venture out. He reckons Rich Critchley tried (but failed miserably) to capsize them.
Things didn't look too promising on Sunday morning. Apathy was embedding itself in everyone's minds. However, Neil had taken the cover off the boat, and put the jib up, only for everyone to find that he was tuning his boat!
Looking down the wind, we could see the tops of the waves, which is not encouraging! The race did start about Noon, and there was some good racing. Robbie D and Toggle seem to be capsize kings for the day (makes a change from Roy) capsizing once before the start, and then more crucially, just coming into the leeward mark - with their mast in the mud, they lost two places and Steve Hunt, with Sam Hall crewing, won from William and Lesley.
In the GPs, some match racing was the order of the day for Hugh and Nigel. Hugh went on to win.
In the afternoon a brave few ventured out for the Banana Stakes. The winds were blustery again and the kindly OD sent us all around the lake (as you do for pennants!) The OD and Herb reckoned that the best plane of the day went to Rhonwen & Hugh who planed for about 10 minutes followed by 10 minutes doing 360 degree capsizes! They were not the only ones to capsize - apart from Keith Thomas & Jonathan Connor in a fifteen all the other boats capsized during the race - even William & Lesley who crashed and burned big style! Rory Yardley, had a good leg down to the bottom of the lake - shame he was hading for 12 instead of 13! Steve Hunt with Sam Hall crewing were first home, but it was Keith & Jonathan who won after personal handicaps were used to calculate the results.

On Sunday, the forecast wind came in and created many thrills and spills. Roy was quick to point out that his capsizes in the morning didn't count - the first was before the start, and the second, during the race, was on purpose to avoid a collision. So for the afternoon was he going to make up for it? Another capsize before the start did not count (so he says), but the one (could have been more) during the race did. Ah well, practice makes perfect?!
It seems that many others were practicing as well. Neil Currie with Sam Hall crewing went swimming in the first race and in the second race they went trawling (followed by another capsize later on). Don't know how many others capsized, but according to Gary on one of the rescue boats, they were playing bingo with each boat that capsized - he just needed William and Lesley to go in for a full house. No such luck there then!
Andy and Bean were due to sail the Yellow Peril's (new nickname?) F15, but the dancing, or was it the Stella, took its toll and they weren't quite ready for the morning race. They did make an appearance in the afternoon race, but only in the baby Bates on rescue cover (or perhaps just taking some snaps of the boats)
The strong winds, apart from proving hard work in the hour long races, did have many spectacular reaches to make it all worthwhile.
Monday's forecast was for more wind, but things didn't look promising at 11:15 when the heavens opened and there was a monsoon like downpour. However, it passed through and the wind seemed light until just after the start when the true north westerly started to hit home. As with Sunday, there were some scary spinnaker legs, and the beats were hard work, but there weren't so many capsizes (was that because Roy didn't venture out?! :). Instead of Joe falling out, it was Scumper's turn this time, and he had to practice front crawl to get back towards the quickly disappearing boat! Neil bravely fended off Scumper by luffing him high on the penultimate mark only to be caught tacking in Scumper's water as he rounded the mark resulting in a 720 penalty, and losing a place.
The GPs series was won, after close racing, by Dave and Lynn from Hugh and Rhonwen with three bullets.
After lunch the winds increased even more, and there was some more close racing in the handicap fleet, especially between Robbie D and Scumper, but it was Robbie who won the race and the series.
In the FF fleet, Mike Moore with a nervous birthday girl (well almost) crewing, had four straight wins, and a blown out spinnaker, over Keith Thomas who had coaxed Graham Kirkpatrick from retirement to crew on one of the windiest days of the season!
The Smith family had a fleet of their own for the final race of the weekend, when they took out five toppers. Brotherly love didn't stop Bean having to do turns after the start. Emma recovered well from one near capsize, but not the second!
The cruising fleet from Southport seemed to enjoy their weekend, and some of them took part in the racing, some of whom got to know the rescue crews very well! Perhaps they'll be back for more next year?

It's my party and I'll DANCE if I want to could have been Sally's motto for her birthday bash - 50? Never. (Well not yet!!). A request for attendees to wear masks resulted in an interesting interpretation by many. Even the Southport cruising visitors, got in the spirit and and brought masks (and Ayatollah Khomeini - or was that a mask?!). The disco kept everyone dancing, including the Bass Stella boys, until late. Jess sang for her mum (and everyone else of course), and whether Toggle was kept away from the the mic, we can but guess.....
With the schools regatta over Club sailing was somewhat quieter this weekend. There was a good, warm breeze from the South. OD Pete Nuttall was determined to start on time, but that must have been his own version of Chico Time (Pedro Time?), because it didn't!
In the first race, the course came back to zero and caused some issues as the wind swung around Sale Fell and the fleet had to beat into the mark. Robbie D lost out to Shunty and William but with the GPs and FFs close by they would win on handicap
The course for the second race stayed in the southerly breeze which led to some spectacular spinnaker legs. With boats capsizing everywhere the rescue crews were kept very busy. After everything was packed away, a call from the coastguard resulted in rescue craft being re-launched to help out some sailors that were in distress at the southern end of the lake. With the air-sea rescue helicopter in attendance, a second rescue craft was despatched with Toggle Hasslehoff aboard to recover the dinghy which the sailors had abandoned
Sunday's racing was held in stronger winds, but they were still curving around Sale Fell reinforcing the need to stay, or get into, in the stronger gusts to keep driving. A knotted mainsheet resulted in Robbie D losing a place at one mark because he couldn't bear away. The wind picked up in the afternoon and there were several capsizes (most of them by Roy and Kayla), but Shunty was a casualty when he tried to use his gennaker to catch Robin up and couldn't handle the gust. Judith Currie had opted out of the last race, so Sam took the front seat in Neil's RS. While hoisting the gennaker, they ended up going trawling, and Sam had to recover the sail. We're not sure whether Sam ended up in the water because he fell or jumped!
Congratulations to Andy Smith and Mark Somerville after coming 20th in the GP14 Worlds held at Sligo NI just before Bass Week. Will the Guinness sales be up or down for Bass Week?
Everyone should have been delighted that there was a weekend of sun with a warm wind, but for the sailors the biggest frustration was that the wind was by no means steady. The first race on Saturday had boats beating on three of the four legs. Neil Currie had taken an early lead with William not too far behind, but on the only leg that wasn't a beat the others caught up and there was several place changes. Neil had to settle for a second to Robbie D, while William ended up fifth behind Steve and Scumper. While waiting between races several sailors opted to cool off by trying some barefoot water skiing (not easy at 2-3 knots from an RS!). When Toggle tried, he lost his balance and catapulted backwards into the water.
Sunday's racing was around the lake - with a north westerly it was never going to be an easy race, but challenging was an understatement. There were gusts, and holes, and shifts, and down draughts. After 50 mins Steve Hunt was first to mark 13 some 20-30m ahead of William, by mark 12 he was 5 mins ahead and the GPs and Mike Moore in his F15 were all mulling around. The wind started to settle down for the beat back up the lake but Steve lost a lot of ground finishing just 2.5 mins ahead of William. Unfortunately the others were still in easy reach of the finish and the race was won by Dave Lawson with Mike Fairlamb crewing

The 'Ladies, crews and junior' race was held last Thursday in somewhat challenging wind conditions. 13 boats took part with many normal crews moving to the back of their boats to try out some helming. Unfortunately for some, the move from the back to the front of the boat for the normal helms proved a bit confusing - Toggle spent ages stationary at buoy 3 waiting for Robbie D to sort out his kite! Noting the strong wind and the forthcoming NSSA regatta, Sam put his radial rig on his laser. This proved to be a good decision as he was third overall and winner of the junior race. Ken Bell took the helm in the GP, but Val decided against flying the kite. Again this proved to be the right decision as they were second overall and won the crews race. Despite having to avoid Rhonwen who did a really rubbish tack (Rhonwen's words!!) in her water at buoy zero, the overall winner was Emma Powell who helmed an Enterprise with Andy Smith crewing. Emma takes the ladies prize for the first time.
Congratulations to Mark Ninnim and Emma Powell following their recent runaway success at the Scottish area championships which were held at Berwick. Four straight wins - what else could anyone wish for? Well done!
Thursday night, Night Jar A finished last week. Overall winner was Mike Turner and Sue Watson in a GP. Mike had done two OD duties during the series, but only needed to count one to win. Ginge was second. Alex Hill (Laser) was third overall and wins the laser/handicap trophy. Tim Smith wins the mirrors and Keith Thomas the Flying Fifteens. In all 44 helms took part over 10 races (two races were abandoned before they were started due to high winds).
16 boats turned out for this weekend's GP open. Although the winds were very light there was enough for two races each day - the third race on Sunday was not started. Beautiful sunshine and we all enjoyed the view whilst waiting for the wind. Very close racing through all parts of the fleet and after the first two races, Telf, Ian Dobson and Dave Lawson were all on 4 points. In the third race, Neil Platt then went and threw a spanner in the works by winning (old habits die hard!). Places changing up every beat and a few deft over-taking manoeuvres downwind. Telf managed to hold on to the lead in the fourth race to win overall. Hugh & Rhonwen were winners of the silver fleet and Mandy Mitchell with Jon Close from Winsford Flash won the Bronze fleet. First time for a long time that a quarter of the fleet had lady helms.

We are delighted to advise that following a nomination by the club, Herb Telford is to be awarded the RYA's Community Award for Lifetime Commitment.
Over the past 30 years Herb has been on Committee of Cumbria CC Schools Training Centre, a senior member of NSSA Regatta Organising Team in mid 1980’s. At club level he was involved with RYA Team Racing at Bass SC in 1977, is a former commodore, been on council and assisted with bar, grounds & jetties, and boats & buoys sub committees. Presently he is most well known as official starter, and is also one of our four trustees.
Herb and his wife Aileen have been invited to receive the award at an official ceremony later in the year.
Congratulations and well done.
It with sadness that we have been informed that long time member Jack Lawson passed away peacefully after a long illness. Jack was a highly competitive sailor in both the GP and Flying 15 fleets as well as enjoying skiing and golfing. The service will be held at All Souls, Netherton, Maryport
Our thoughts are with Jack's wife Carol, his sons Peter and David and their families at this sad time
You should be aware that it is only a couple of weeks until the NSSA National Youth Regatta is held at Bassenthwaite. Don't forget that many hands make light work, so any bit of help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Please don't wait to be asked.
A working party will be held at the club on Tuesday 18 July. Please try and be there.
Thank you!
With the summer on its last legs (or so it seemed), the hot balmy days of the past week were a bit of a distant memory asthe the air cooled and the weather front moved in from Ireland bringing blustery wind and rain.
The handicap fleet were a little too eager for the start (or was the line so biased?) that there were two general recalls much to the dismay of the lasers who were all being good and staying behind the line. In several instances throughout the racing the leaders came a cropper to the gusting winds and ended up capsized - First Scumper, then Neil, then Shunty, and off course Toggle doesn't like to miss out so Robbie D ended up in the water as well! With no other GPs to sail against, Hugh sailed in the handicap fleet, stayed upright and on the tails of the RS and of course won! The second race was similarly windy - William took the right side of the first beat and the lead, and broke away until the next beat. Shunty went for another swim and an early finish, Robbie D who had earlier sussed the wind conditions and advised Herb not to use mark A, ended up capsizing at A with his gennaker up (and also took an early exit from the race. Neil trawled his kite on the final 50 m leg to the finish and let William back through but it was Hugh that again took the honours on handicap
Toddy and Ron Lee braved the elements again in their Mirrors but found it a bit too challenging. However, at least they tried. Well done
The strong winds forecast for Sunday must have passed through overnight, and although the sun tried to break through, it was drizzly most of the morning race. The handicap fleet saw some extremely close racing with four RS400s each taking turns at the front. Andy T tried to slow Scumper down by somersaulting out of the boat on a spinnaker reach. Not content with doing it once, he got back in the boat, bent down and fell out again!
Hugh had competition in the GPs and from the Ashby's for the morning at least, so the win on a single race was sufficient for him to take his first trophy of the weekend - the Macmillan Cup
With no GPs for the afternoon, Hugh rejoined the handicap fleet, secured a third position and his second trophy - the Grisedale Cup.
As Toggle had no helm for the day, he took out the mirror in the hope of cleaning up, but he was no match for Mik Chappell who took the Round Table Tankard with two straight wins.

Yes, you may not have realised it, but the Spring (Cup) has come to an end following an afternoon's racing in hot, muggy conditions with the added bonus of fair winds if only you could get to them! The morning southerly breeze which all the potential newcomers to the club enjoyed, was challenged and counteracted by an afternoon sea breeze. This conflict continued throughout the afternoon and became more challenging during the second race with the addition of a steady northerly breeze!?
This may sound similar to other summer afternoons, however the three winds co-existed for the duration of the race such that the windward mark (8) was in a south easterly, one of the wings marks (0) was in a south westerly, and the other wing mark (4) and leeward mark (1) enjoyed northerlies! You would be right in thinking that it was challenging for some boats to move between the wind systems. William and Lesley lost substantial ground to the lasers (which seemed to huddle together like a duck with ducklings) whilst manoeuvring between the wind systems. With only two starters in the GPs you'd expect life to be simple, but for some inexplicable reason there was a general recall! Ginge and Jose broke away from Val and Ken only to have their lead swallowed up by the wind conditions, but they did stay ahead and when the results were calculated they realised that the afternoon's racing had determined the winners of the Spring Cup which turned out to be Ginge with Val second.
Sunday afternoon's race took the fleet around the lake. The sea breeze seemed to have set in over the lunch break and the fleet generally had a broad reach/dead run in light airs all the way to 12. Neil and Judith Currie broke away slightly, but Rory Yardley in the RS300, being able to take the direct route rather than having to use the broad reaches of the RS400s, wasn't far behind. The return up the lake was reasonable until 7 when the gaps closed between all boats. At this stage Rory opted for the western shore (not the thing to do as he found) and lost substantial ground. Mike Fairlamb who had been recalled at the start for being over, had taken the lead from Hugh and Rhonwen, but that was lost at 7 when Hugh left Mike floundering looking for wind.
The wind filed in allowing Neil, William and Hugh to finish then it dropped to mirror like conditions. However, on handicap, Hugh was close enough to win by 400secs from Neil

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank a couple of people from your sailing club. I arrived on Saturday afternoon (24/06) to gather some information regarding membership, joining fees etc. I got talking to a lady called Jane Hall & a young fella called Philip Hodgkins. They made me feel very welcome and gave me lots of useful information, including contact names, addresses, telephone numbers & Email addresses.
The Tale - As we continued with our conversation I mentioned to Jane that the last time I had sailed was about 20 years ago, this was during a Royal Engineers sailing course based on the river Weser in Germany. This is where it all begins to go a bit blurry. Before I knew it, Jane & Philip went to the trouble of getting out a club boat (Topper) & rigged it up for me. Jane lent me a pair of wetshoes & that was it! With a wry smile they bid me on my way & all for the measly sum of £3.00. By now the adrenalin had kicked in & I felt like a wasp on speed!! After finally realising that I was afloat it took several minutes for me to realise that I had to do some work to sail this object that I was sat in. I just about managed a few North - South legs & was beginning to feel safe-ish. Not wanting to overdo it I decided to bring the boat back in & watched eagerly for tips as other members drifted in quite calmly & expertly. Being rather impetuous I under estimated my distance from the shore. I promptly lifted the dagger board and jumped straight over the side into what I thought was a couple of feet of water. Imagine my surprise when I felt my private bits under my chin as I wallowed in about 2 metres of Bass!! Just then a slight breeze capsized my craft thanks to me removing the said daggerboard. I was promptly aided by another willing member who re-inserted the daggerboard & righted the boat. Once on terra-firma I thanked all concerned & scuttled away a very embarrassed but chuffed & exhilarated SAILOR Not deterred I shall return - hopefully, if permitted. Once again Many Thanks for a great afternoon.
Best Regards Martin
Congratulations to Keith Jamieson and Maf Smith on attaining second overall in the Flying Fifteen Classic Nationals held at Abersoch last week. Word has it he was beaten by age!
Saturday's racing was held in light to medium airs with a turnout of 10 boats for the 2nd fleet challenge trophy of the season. The asymmetrics weren't able to gain ground offwind because of the lack of gusts, so it was Tim Smith that took the overnight lead.
Roy and Kayla had some close racing with William and Lesley for the first couple of races, indeed William only got past in the second race when Roy hit the windward mark - Roy must have thought he could walk on water at that stage because he had been flying the gennaker on a leg so close that it could have been a beat, and still managing to luff William.
Congratulations to Toddy and Ron for biting the bullet and entering the series. Toddy just can't seem to stop laughing (even when he misses out marks!). Toddy had another good day on Sunday - capsized, couldn't work out where the buoys are (but was told the secret that even marks have a white band). Get out there and join them
Sunday's racing was held in better winds - too much like hard work for Rhonny (or so she claimed) especially with a full rig. Paul Burnell, Tim Chittenden, Ian Macpherson, and Arnie Helling all went swimming. Roy and Kayla wondered what else could go wrong - decided it could be a collision and it was! Mike Fairlamb, whilst avoiding hitting the committee boat, and taking out the OD, tacked and had to tack again to avoid hitting Roy, but the merging of their boats meant it was time to do some turns!
Stuart Brookes had a good day's racing, but having to count a DNS put him out of the reckoning. Anyway, after an eventful three races, all was over just after 3pm which gave everyone plenty of time to get home for the football. It was Tim Chittenden that came out on top after counting a 3rd for being OD on Saturday.

With the series results already determined, Rhonwen and Hugh split up and offered their services as personal trainers for the final race of the weekend. While Rhonwen crewed for Graham Ashby, his daughter crewed for Hugh - and guess who came out on top! Yes it was Graham and Rhonwen
As for the rest of the weekend, the weather had been at its most cruel with wind swinging and shifting significantly, but also leaving massive holes for many boats to get dumped in and left behind. One boat that couldn't be shaken off was Mike Moore, who was sailing in the handicap fleet, and secured two first and a second to win the trophy. His reason for not doing so well in the last race was that he was more relaxed because he had already won the series, the fact that the strengthening winds gave the 400s some spectacular spinnaker reaches may have been closer to the truth. Also, a loose twinning line resulted in Mike being flattened on his final reach.
Again, Roy and Kayla took the trophy for the most capsizes! There seemed to be several bumps and bangs - Roy and Steve, Mike and Scumper, Sam and Mike (and those are the ones I noticed!).
With 26 boats taking to the water over the weekend, all in all it was a gud un! Why not come and join in?

Congratulations to Lesley Braddock on winning
the Doctors' Handicap Trophy at Coniston this weekend. Racing was
intermingled with club racing but two firsts and a second were more than
enough to secure the trophy in a fleet of nearly twenty boats including

You may recall being given the opportunity to win an RS200, by buying raffle tickets to support West Riding Sailing Club's fire fund. The first person to come forward was Nigel Lewis - he felt obliged to support the sailing club which his daughter Wendy uses at University. In fact, he felt so obliged that he bought two books. Well it all proved worthwhile, because it was Wendy that won the brand new RS200 - Well done!
Summer arrived at last? Winds on
Saturday led to ideal sailing conditions, but Sunday proved to be more
challenging for the OD Neil Currie at least, due to light winds with inbuilt
big shifts. Overall the competitors all enjoyed some close, challenging, racing, even though the outcome was not unexpected with Steve Goacher and Andy Tunnicliffe securing three firsts and the open meeting trophy

Although Saturday started off relatively mild, strong gusts had been passing over the lake all morning. By the time racing started, the rain had moved in and the gusts were coming down vertically and things didn't improve much apart from the sun coming out later in the day.
Roy and Kayla were still a little anxious about their new boat, and it was well founded! A blustery first beat ended with a capsize that was enought for them to call it a day.
They weren't the only ones to go swimming; Phil and Rich Hodgkins did their bit for the chandlery trade in the first race, and then Phil took Dave Lawson out for the second race, only to have another capsize and bend the tiller extensions.
As for the racing, Mark and Emma hung on in there in their Enterprise, securing a first and third overall. Scumper and Zefer sailed well in both races, but mistook A for 9 in the second race and had a valiant effort trying to stop capsizing (because they couldn't lay 9 with the gennaker up) well after the point of no return! Robbie D and Toggle's performance regained them the lead for the series overall.
The wind continued through the night, as did the partying, but when racing started the wind was a 'slightly' steadier westerly. Roy and Kayla were aiming for three marks before capsizing - and they did it!. Roy had a corker of a first beat to be in second position at the windward mark, but he felt obloged to hold his position by flying the kite - problem was with the gusts coming through he couldn't lay the mark and then struggled to take down the kite - It's tough at the top! Their tales of woe continued and they had an extra couple of capsizes along the way, however, they weren't alone - Neil and Bean, Robbie and Toggle, Steve and Ruth, Scumper and Zefer, Phil and Andy T - all joined them. Both Steve and Robbie had to practice their swimming techniques to get back to their boats. It might have been easier to list that stayed upright - William and Lesley, Dave and Lynn, Val and Ken.
Close racing in the RS400 almost led to a demolition derby at a couple of marks, but fortunately everyone came out unscathed.
Monday started off flat calm, but once racing was under way sailors were treated to a variation of shifts and gusts passing through from time tio time that tended to break up the fleets somewhat. In the afternoon, the gusts (when they came) caught out a couple of GPs along the bottom reach, and they kept the rescue crews going by capsizing.
Apart from a heavy shower at the end of the day, the weather wasn't too bad for a bank holiday!

There may not have been many racing on Saturday, but Roy and Sam's appearances brought them to the front of the celebrity glass series. Word has it that Sam had a little chuckle to himself (as you do!) when Ian Macpherson capsized - He'll soon learn that what goes around comes around - Beware Sam!
Sunday started mirrorlike, but the wind filled in after lunch to let the fleet have two back to back races. Mike Fairlamb in his GP was again sailing well, and beat F15 sailor Keith Jamieson on the water and indeed won both races on handicap to take a strong lead in the series

This weekend we had over boats in three fleets racing on the lake. A brisk, cold north easterly greeted the fleets on Saturday, but the breeze eased before the start, and although boats kept moving, the wind came and went in fits and starts, with gains to be had from the gusts and accompanying shifts.
The 505 class northern area championship, has Jim Blyth from Largo on the same points but just ahead of John Webster from Carsington as the sailors rest with a curry and lager night!
The fast handicap fleet with 19 boats had Richard Smith from Glossop as overnight leader, and the slow handicap fleet, comprising a combination of mirror variations, was being led by Edward Grey from Royal Windermere.
As for tittle tattle, Roy and Kayla had a day of firsts (possibly best to get them out of the way in one go!). Having moved up to the RS400 fleet, not only were they sailing the boat for the first time, but it was their first open in it, and their first (but not only) capsize. Kayla had to do some helming for the first time as Roy tried to catch up with her when she and the boat sailed away after the capsize. Quite a day, but it didn't stop them going out for more in the second race.
Despite a southerly wind, Sunday was just as cold. The winds had the sailors hanging out up the beats, but off wind planing conditions were sometimes marginal. This was certainly a frustration in the final race which took two fleets on a 35 minute beat to the southern end of the lake, but the wind seemed to lose its punch for the return trip so, again, the off wind legs were not as spectacular as many had hoped for.
All in all, the weekend had some excellent close racing, and all sailors will no doubt sleep well after so much exercise.

The changeable weather continues. A forecast of rain resulted in, at best, a few heavy clouds, but the winds eased by the time racing started, and the sun did its best to provide a hazy glow through the clouds. Robbie D and Toggle sailed consistently to win both races on handicap.
Sunday started mirror-like, and slowly filled in to allow a start shortly after lunch, but the direction and strength wouldn't settle down such that the conditions would be different each time a leg of the course was sailed..
Mik Chappell in his mirror took the lead from Tim Smith only to lose it to when his spinnaker went under the boat. Neil Currie had mixed fortunes having held a strong lead in the first race to fighting off last position (within the RS400s) in the second. John Halliday took advantage of a shift on the start of the last lap to get through to second position. We won't SHOUT TOO LOUDLY about him hitting a gybe mark, and he did well to hold his position to the end, but Sam Hall took second position on handicap.
In the GPs Hugh and Rhonwen held off attacks from Mike and Eric.

Sailing has been challenging with unsettled winds all weekend so far. When it did blow there was some good planing, but there were many holes to be buried in. The Catapult fleet enjoyed themselves so much last year they came back for more, so Sunday afternoon they had the treat of a race around the lake! As ever, it was challenging (and that's being polite!) and that was for the people who should know better. Scott Beattie and John Somerville on their first day's sailing of the season were difficult to shake off by the RS400s and won both races on handicap.
Monday started off wet, but the drizzle was soon blown away by the blustery winds which caused several capsizes during the day. In fact, the first casualty was a dismasted catapult that had to be towed ashore. The gybe mark was a challenge for many, including Andy and Bean who was under instructions to 'tickle' their 49er around mark 6. Whatever that may mean, Bean successfully completed the challenge, but on a later gybe concentration was lost and they ended up capsized with mast in the mud.
The Monday series was the Paul Carruthers Memorial Trophy for which the main contenders was the first winner of the trophy Robbie D with Toggle in an RS400, and defending champion Mike Moore with Sally Roberts in a F15 - after the handicaps were calculated that was the order during the lunch break. this meant it was all on the last race. William Carruthers with Lesley Braddock in an RS400 were first to the windward mark and held off Robin for the first lap, until Robin pulled through on the next beat. For the next couple of laps there was some breathtakingly close racing and spectacular spinnaker reaches, but Robin eventually broke away to win the race and the series with William second and Mike third
The catapult visitors enjoyed their weekend, unfortunately I don't have a copy of the results at present, but here's Stuart Ede, the winning helm, receiving his trophy from Rhonwen

Sailing was a little quiet at the club on Saturday due to Mark and Kirstie's wedding celebrations. Here's a pic of the happy couple
Of course, hats always come out at weddings, so you won't be surprised by the following. What we really need to know is what part of the body the ring is for!
Toggle actually owned up to it being a handbag (not a ring) - he'd spent the previous evening searching through the wardrobe for it (well strange things happen after several pints of Jennings!)
Saturday fought off several showers to leave a sunny afternoon but not a lot of wind - not a day for leaving out a bung as one RS sailor discovered to his horror at the end of the day! The Celebrity Glass Trophy was held on an all fleet handicap basis. Steve Hunt led the way in his new boat for the first race, but it was birthday boy Robbie D that showed the way in the 2nd race. Mike Moore pulled through Keith Jamieson to be lead F15 in each race, Eric Smith crewing for his son in Mike Fairlamb's GP led the GP fleet (but retired in the 2nd race), and Tim Smith held off Mike Chappell in the mirrors.
Sunday was the day many seemed to be fighting off the effects of a long night socialising. Mark N won the prize for the longest lie in - 2pm! Sailing wise there was plenty of wind and many capsizes. An ineffective hooter on the finish line left Robbie D and Scumper sailing an extra sausage just to make sure all their efforts around the course didn't go to waste.
Sunday's forecast was for more wind, and with a westerly breeze at times it looked like quite a good sail (from the clubhouse), but then the sun would come out, highlight all the tops of the waves and suddenly sailing no longer seemed like a good idea. Telf and Adny were first to rig their boat, but it was to be Dave and Lynn Lawson that took to the water first. At this stage the RS fleet were still not convinced that sailing was a good idea, but then Shunty had gone to the effort of rigging his boat again, and Scumper and Zefer had taken to the water, so the others followed suit, but the OD had to wait (perhaps Scumper was practising for being on time for his wedding next week!?) until all four RS400s were ready before starting their race. Meanwhile the GPs were powering around their course in strong, but sailable, winds. Telf, being the lead boat, had not taken account of a leg from 0 to 8 which required 9 to be rounded, not just passed. This quirk of the course had everyone else pirouetting around 9 - something you can do without when in the middle of a screaming reach.
Mark 9 was also to prove a downfall for Scumper who did not manage to get the gennaker down before rounding and lost a place to Robbie D while retrieving it. As the wind had picked up significantly before the final lap, some felt that it was a bit of a penance for being late! However, the race had decided the series, and there were no takers for the final race

In fact there was possibly everything apart from what is expected in terms of April showers - sleet, hail, bright sunshine and a cold breeze.
Sleet/snow and gale force winds on Saturday morning put many off apart from Mike Moore who had travelled up from Preston led the fleet in both races and won both on handicap from Sam Hall and Roy Blackburn. By the second race the wind had eased so much that Robbie D shortened the course to make sure it didn't become a drifter.
Sunday was equally strange weather wise, bright sunshine with a good force 2/3, but the threat of sleet or hail didn't seem too far away. With Mike Moore as OD and Neil Currie as official starter for the day, it was recommended to be over the line. However, Dave Nicholson was and was hailed back, but Mike Fairlamb must have had a conscience of some sort as he too went back even though he was clear of the line! However it did not seem to affect him too much as he was soon on Dave Lawson's tail. On the final beat Dave went one way, and Mike the other which made all the difference and Mike finished first with a good lead.
In the handicap fleet, consistency ruled; the adjusted handicap positions matched the finishing order on the water for both races, with Robbie D securing two firsts.

Is this a sign of things to come? The second racing day of the season was only slightly less windy than the first. Steve Hunt took Kayla out in the RS400 to see if she still likes it before changing fleet from the lark. Just as well she's used to capsizing as, yes, they ended up in the water again, and her shorty didn't afford any protection to those knees, which had quite a glow when she returned to shore.
Racing was slightly delayed while various sailors plucked up the courage to put up sails and get on the water. William and Elaine opted for afternoon tea with Bridget! Mike Fairlamb had competition (in the nicest sense of the word) in the GPs from the Hodgkins boys, although they tried their best to catch him up, the odd couple of capsizes did not help them and they retired.
Robbie D and Toggle took the lead in the handicap fleet, but Steve and Ruth pulled through to finish with a good lead. Roy took Kayla for her second swim of the day - what would her knees be like now? Scumper jack went out to play in the second race with Phil Hodgkins, and they were to capsize before the start. Robbie D led the first beat but capsized just before the leeward mark. Although Steve was second at that stage, it was to be Scumper that led the following beat. An early gybe on to a gust just after the windward mark seemed to be a good move, but the gust strangthened, they didn't sit back, and went swimming. Again, Steve held second place while Robbie D took the lead! The final result was Robbie D, Scumper and Steve.
Sunday was not so pleasant - wet, cold and generally windless! The wind seemed to fill in before the start but by the end of the first beat it had faded to a drifter. Scumper took an early lead but Robin pulled through on the final run to win by a smidgen. In the GPs, Lyn and David Lawson made a triumphant return, winning the morning race. The afternoon pennant, which was held in drifting conditions for the first hour to the windward mark, but when rounding for the return home, the wind swung back to the north and started to fill in. William and Jonathan had secured a small lead by the windward mark, but nowhere near sufficient to win on handicap, and the change of wind direction did nothing to help them out. Nigel and Cecile, in a GP, won overall when the results were calculated on a personal handicap basis.

You'll note from the activity on the webcam that something's afoot. Yes many people have been enjoying the mild weather and getting their boats ready for the off. Ginge couldn't wait and so went out in his laser, and then again in the GP. He was very nearly the first to capsize this season as well (but didn't)
Steve is excitedly waiting for his new boat, but was disturbed when watching the CCTV to note his camper van being driven off! He ran off in a panic only to discover that it was just a similar van to his.
As for the racing, deputy official starter Pete Nuttall had got up early out of his bed and wasn't going to hang around for any namby pamby sailors deciding whether they should go out to sail. The fact that it was honking seemed to have nothing to with anything!. Pete declared that racing would start at 11.30 and he went out with OD Mik Chappell to get things going. There was a flurry of activity as five boats prepared themselves for the first race of the season. Bridget turned up in her Sunday best, only to find a cup of tea was the preferred option. William was easily tempted to join her so they could watch how things progressed. Roy and Kayla were the first to go in their lark (having opted not to try out an RS400), Ian Macpherson followed in his laser, and then Toggle and Robbie D ventured out in an RS400 followed by Steve and Ruth. It was noticeable that the wind had increased because spectators could see white horses looking down wind! As they approached the start line, there was the first capsize of the day - Toggle blamed it on the centreboard coming up! Although they managed to right the boat, they went in several more times and ended up being towed ashore. Steve and Ruth went swimming as well, they also struggled to right the boat but, with a little help, they were back in the boat and sailing home. Ian and Roy had already seen sense and returned home. If racing had commenced at 1130 UTC (not BST), it would still have been windy, but things were somewhat more manageable. Such is life
Perhaps racing will start next week?!
The first Sunday's racing was in dry, but very blustery conditions. William and Lesley caught a gust coming in to a gybe mark, but trying to stay to windward of the mark during the gust was not the right thing to do, and they ended up capsized on the mark. Having righted the boat and u lassooing themselves from the mark they continued the race. But while they were over, all but Jim Christie capsized as well. Jose thought Ginge was running off with the other woman when he fell out of the back of the boat, but managed to hold on to the mainsheet and rescue the boat (and Jose, of course) from who knows what?! Jim's caution kept him upright, and he won the race on personal handicap, only to have his handicap chopped by 5% for subsequent races.
The afternoon race had more gybe marks and even bigger squalls. William and Lesley picked up a gust coming in to the first gybe mark, and went for another swim, but managed to right the boat and continued the race again. Jim maintained his caution, and avoided flying his spinnaker, but also had problems with a broken toestrap, and a universal tiller joint that may not have survived another lap. He again won on the water, but his amended handicap led to Ginge winning the race, and becoming series leader.
The following three weekends sailing were cancelled due to glorious weather and lack of wind causing the series to be determined on the first weekends sailing, so Jose and Ginge are the first winners for the 2006 prize giving
