Eye of the Storm

After a week of wind and floods, many boats have been removed from site for safe storage or repair!

As you can see from the webcam, Sunday started with a fantastic mist that was lit by the morning sun. In fact the glorious weather continued all day, but without wind, and consequently without racing. Don't be surprised if the views turn up in calendars for 2007!

Mik and team brought in the Bates to stop it wandering off on day trips (twice this week!), and it promptly slid off due to not being tied to the trailer when Mik tried a racing start on the tractor, but we're assured there was no damage. For everyone waiting for the final pennant race of the season, it won't be a round the laker as the bottom end marks have now been removed for the season.

Night of a Thousand Stars

Despite the weather throughout the day and the rest of the country, the night was clear and the stars shining during the bonfire night celebrations during which there was a magnificent array of fireworks. With hot dogs, toffee apples, treacle toffee and soup to hand, everyone had a great evening. The bonfire was moved to higher ground, and we were in desperate need of an arsonist to get the damp wood alight, but it was done!

Sunday's racing was in dry, but very blustery conditions. William and Lesley caught a gust coming in to a gybe mark, but trying to stay to windward of the mark during the gust was not the right thing to do, and they ended up capsized on the mark. Having righted the boat and u lassooing themselves from the mark they continued the race. But while they were over, all but Jim Christie capsized as well. Jose thought Ginge was running off with the other woman when he fell out of the back of the boat, but managed to hold on to the mainsheet and rescue the boat (and Jose, of course) from who knows what?! Jim's caution kept him upright, and he won the race on personal handicap, only to have his handicap chopped by 5% for subsequent races.

The afternoon race had more gybe marks and even bigger squalls. William and Lesley picked up a gust coming in to the first gybe mark, and went for another swim, but managed to right the boat and continued the race again. Jim maintained his caution, and avoided flying his spinnaker, but also had problems with a broken toestrap, and a universal tiller joint that may not have survived another lap. He again won on the water, but his amended handicap led to Ginge winning the race, and becoming series leader.

Remember there's only three weeks left. If you don't intend sailing you would be well advised to make sure your boat is away from the high water level as the lake is presently very high, and several trailers along the lower slip are already in water.

It Ain't Over Till It's Over

That was the sentiment at the start of the final weekend series towards this year's championships. However, on a cold, wet Saturday, with a feeble wind, the turnout was down to a few hardy sailors. In the handicap fleet, Steve Hunt would re-appear at the top of the championship table so long as he won or Neil Currie didn't secure 15 points from the series, and Robin Dawson didn't secure 16 points. With a low turn-out on Saturday, and a poor wind forecast for Sunday, Steve's took the championship again, but may well have to work harder for it next year!

The Mirror fleet turned out in force (three boats!) to enter what was to be only the second championship series of the year. Rob, or was it Tim, Smith held out on Saturday to win both races from Mike Chappell - But what would Sunday bring?

The GP fleet thought better of it this weekend as there was no opportunity to catch and overtake sailing secretary Hugh Godfrey's lead in the championship. As for the Flying 15s, they seem to have burnt themselves out and packed up for the rest of the season - perhaps they're saving themselves for next year?

Clueless!?

What does the heading refer to? The OD? - No. A helm? - No. A crew? - No. It was the conditions on Saturday! Although there had been a strong breeze over Friday night and into Saturday morning, by the time racing started, what little wind there was, was all over the place. A slight swell from the south; wind patches in which the wind came from a different direction to the ripples on the water; even burgees were indicating totally different conditions to those filling the sails! It certainly seemed like it was pot luck, and necessary to be in the right place at the right time. All this made it very much harder for Robin Dawson to stay in with a chance of winning the handicap championship. He was working off the basis that he needed a 4th from two races to knock Neil off pole position, but it was only while waiting for some boats to finish that it was pointed out that he would have had better control of the situation by being OD, taking a 3rd and cancelling the last race! Hindsight's a wonderful thing. Did he do the necessary? You'll have to wait and see....

Tim Smith and Mike Chappell battled it out to win the first mirror trophy of the season! However, with two straight wins Tim took the trophy.

Saturday evening had naughty nighties and knickers, thongs ‘n’ things, girls' toys and all sorts of unmentionables when Ann Summers' rep came to the club. Everyone was in the swing(?) of things especially with the pass the parcel forfeits, including demonstrating air hostess uniforms, what not to do with large vegetables (and getting certificates to prove it!), and being careful to look but not touch some of the exhibits. To see the photos click here (Wonderful thing these camera phones NB Not for the feint hearted!)

Sunday began with threateningly high gusts, and Tim did go for a swim before the start, but the start came and the wind went, leaving all but Steve and Ruth to drift around the course in a relatively close bunch. In the afternoon, the winds seemed to have settled down, but it was not to be the case.

Grotty Potty Stakes

The flying fifteen team racing had a fleet of 20 boats competing for the Viking Trophy. If only last year's winner, that forgetful president, had remembered to return the trophy! Saturday had much close racing, (even if Steve Goacher and Phil Evans did stand in as lead boat for the weekend yet again!), and the eagerness to start resulted in a few general recalls, but no black flags. Hugh Godfrey, the stand-in official starter tried to get into the Grotty Potty stakes by being distracted at a crucial moment (no it's not what you think - the OD wouldn't allow it!) and forgot to blow his horn.

Sunday's conditions were much more blustery, and with the wind from the south-west, gusts wrapping around Sale Fell made tacking in mark 9 'interesting'. The conditions did result in several boats being flattened, and one even managed to get a mast stuck in the mud (that shouldn't happen with such a big lump of iron under the boat). Keith Thomas and Andrea Preston's antics resulted in their boat being renamed the green submarine.

The final results show there was a good mix of performance over the weekend, and it was Derwentitis that are this year's victors.

Last year's winner of the Grotty Potty had the pleasure of nominating and awarding the potty to this year's contenders. Apart from Ian Preston who had forgotten the trophy, Steve nominated Alan Robinson's crew, Carl Whitehill, for falling out of the boat in the final race and causing his team to drop from 2nd to 3rd overall (in favour of Steve's team). But it was to be the crew that had to retie a spinnaker, but managed to do so after wrapping the sheet several times around the shroud - who could it have been other than Steve's crew Phil Evans. We understand he won't be doing that again.

Currie with Jam?

A quiet weekend at the club for various reasons - beer festivals, 21st parties, illness... So quiet that Herb opted to try out a fixed, shore based start, so the challenge was on for competitors to fly spinnakers on the reaching start without being over the line!

Saturday was blustery for the start of the October series (yes, only 2 months of the season left!), and resulted in several capsizes - Kayla seemed to master the art of staying on the dry side of the boat for most of the three capsizes that she and Roy suffered; Tim Chittenden survived the gybe marks but was blown in with a huge backer on the beat to one. Despite his capsize, as the series is run on a personal handicap basis, Tim won the first race, with Jim Christie taking the honours in the second race.

Sunday started with little prospect of racing, as the lake was mirror like at 11am. However, it did fill in in time for a 12 Noon start, Neil and Judith Currie took an early lead, and although William and Lesley kept the pressure on, they couldn't break through to the lead, so Neil was able to use the first position to take the lead in the Skiddaw Trophy series.

The afternoon race was the Bass Burgee pennant - and it was a penance for all but Neil - he managed to keep moving and reached the bottom of the lake in 30 minutes, but with everyone else wallowing in the shifting airs, it was to be another 10 mins before Mike Chappell got there and a further 7 mins before William reached mark 12. However, the return leg was not so straight forward for Neil and he had to work to keep his lead on Mike Chappell, while William had some better luck and eventually passed Mike, leaving Rory Yardley at a standstill around mark 11. Alan Nicholson also held his luck, for a while, and crept up the western shore to pass Rory. However, Alan's luck slipped away when he capsized, several times, on the final beat to the finish. Neil did pull further ahead and won the race on a fleet handicap basis, while Mike took the honours for the Flying Enterprise trophy as first (and only) flying 15. this race being the last of the season's pennants meant that the final results for Sandra's Salver could be calculated, and this year it will go to Lesley Braddock.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Andy and Emma on the birth of their (first) daughter Katia Rose who weighed in at 6lb 15oz at 4:30am on 27th September. Dad's elated, mother and baby doing well!

....and here's the doting grandparents

What a Party!

The meet and greet evening held on Saturday was definitely something not to be missed. Firework display, gastronomic buffet (with even some left over for Sunday lunch), laughter and entertainment (no Miles was not there!), free bar to all members. It's a pity some of you missed it!

As for the racing, there was challenging winds all weekend, and Sunday brought showers (at one stage Neil was able to stand on one side of his boat 'in the dry' while it was raining on the other side!), squalls (which caused some capsizes), and drifting patches (which let the rest of the fleet catch me up!). However, none of these events overturned the consistency of the results with Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley winning the handicap series with four wins, while that new master of the GP fleet Hugh Godfrey had four straight wins with Rhonwen Bryce as well.

As the season has only two months to go, the championships are still open to challenge - the latest version is shown below.

Didn't he do Admirally!

I know it should say admirably, but since Tim Chittenden won the weekend series, it seemed more appropriate. With the tinker association having a travellers meeting of 22 boats, and many members away at the Southport 24 hour race, there was only a few takers for the club racing. Mike Fairlamb sailed a couple of races in a laser, one in a GP, and the final one he crewed in a GP. Other Sunday takers included Neil and Judith, William and Lesley, Roy and Kayla, and Leila and Sue. However, as Tim had sailed all four races, the Tinker Trophy goes to him!

The club can hold their heads high again after another good result in the 24 hour race when the finished 5th overall. Although Hugh's boat was packed away and on the road in record time, no one's quite certain when he'll get back to the club - perhaps he's stopped for a sleep!?

Apart from some heavy rain on Saturday evening, the Tinker Association had another excellent event with 22 boats taking part. Yet again David Warren took the trophy with Dennis Aldred 2nd , and John & Val Allen 3rd

Brain Cell on Offer!

At Ullswater YC's RS open meeting on Saturday, three members ventured down to brave some strong winds only to sit in the eye of the storm all day. The wind came and went from time to time, and the short races meant that, generally, it was important to get it right at an early stage. Scumper and T had a couple of good results, and several run ins (wait a while longer for those tales!), but it was Robbie D and Toggle that came out on top to finish third overall. Scumper was 5th, and William and Lesley 8th.

As for Scumper, his first run in was with the steamer - it appeared from nowhere and stopped just in front of him, so Scumper cut in close behind its stern, and just as the blue rinse brigade were taking photos of the Scumper and T, the captain powered up to full steam ahead, pushed Scumper 15 yards away and then he was sucked back in by the wash! In what was to be the final race, the wind had filled in from behind and as boats rounded the leeward mark for the finish, a mass of RS200s came in as well. One boat decided it wanted water on Scumper, but it didn't have it, and Scumper wasn't going to give it which all lead to a bit of verbals, and a comment was overheard later that the crew was going to offer a brain cell for Scumper and T to share! Little did they know the expertise they were up against - the winner of the 2000 Lord Birkett.

Meanwhile at the club, they had more than their fair share of wind, but there was only two takers - Sam Hall, and Stu and Debbie Spence. Sunday was slightly busier, but there was a lack of wind! However, it did fill in and another four races were held in this quick fire series of eight races. Sunday's results were headed by the RS200, but it was Sam Hall that took the trophy.

Indian Summer

Sun and wind - what more could you want? Even the water isn't too cold for those of us that ended up in it! Saturday's racing concluded the Dodd Trophy for the handicap fleet, and OD Rich Hodgkins set simple, but challenging, windward/leeward courses. Although ground can be gained on the beats, races tend to be won and lost on the offwind legs. Robin Dawson with Phil Hodgkins took another two first to win the series.

Sunday seemed to start in a similar fashion, with a good south easterly, but inter mingled with gusts from various  directions, but mainly south west. Everyone knew they were in for a challenging race when seconds before the start the wind headed and those at the starboard end were unable to lay the line on starboard! Neil Currie  and Paul Burnell had taken the left hand side of the course to stay in the wind but others had much more of a struggle to get to the windward mark. However, the shifting winds continued such that on the next beat Robin Dawson moved from 3rd to 1st and Neil dropped from 1st to 3rd, but later got back into 2nd.. A loose tiller joint that eventually failed led to Robin's retirement, giving Neil first place.

The steady strong winds made the thought of the afternoon round the lake pennant race seemed a bit daunting for many (apart from Bridget who 'doesn't do round the lakers'), as there was likely to be a 3 mile beat (before the 3 mile reach home). By the time of the start, the wind had eased so crews could sit out on the beat with hanging on for dear life!. The downside was that the route back was less exciting, some planing gusts, but not as many as anticipated. The front end of the fleet stayed close together, with Mike Moore and Toni Nuttall just a couple of minutes behind Robin Dawson and Phil Hodgkins. ? in an osrey was just in front of Mike but crossed the wrong side of the line, and retired, with William and Lesley were just on their tails. The results were calculated on a personal handicap basis and first place went to Stuart Brookes.

While the Od was passing the time he took a few pics of which these are a mini selection.

Congratulations!

Wedding bells will be resounding for another happy couple sometime in the future  - congratulations to Mark Somerville and Kirsty Nixon on their recent engagement. An impromptu party took place on Saturday evening, that left a few people somewhat jaded on Sunday.

Mark and Kirsty wish to thank everyone for all of the effort made organising the engagement celebrations over the weekend. They were very surprised but thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and hope everyone else did too. They were shocked but thoroughly delighted with the picture and money that were presented to them, and thank everyone. They promise to keep us posted on the wedding plans as they go along.

With the high winds on Sunday morning there weren't many takers for the race, and those that did go out did not stay upright for long! With the rescue craft under pressure to attend to all the boats racing was abandoned for the day.

The winds continued through Sunday night but eased in time for racing  and there was glorious sunshine too. With visitors from the Southport (they were so appreciative of the wiggling bar staff that they want to come back for more!) and the Catapult Association holding their National Championship there were plenty of people on site and boats on the water.

Ian Smith woke with a start when a bucket of iced water was thrown over him by some caring friends?!

The handicap fleet were a bit eager at the start, and three boats were over the line, but only Steve Hunt returned to restart. Although Robin Dawson and Mark Somerville sailed the course, they did not receive finishing horns as they were the other two boats over at the start. Robin's day did not improve in the afternoon as a capsize  whilst putting up the spinnaker, left Robin in the water while Toggle rushed to pick up his helm - problem was that the wind picked up, filled the genniker, and Toggle was heading in the wrong direction, he then gybed and capsized again. Robin was picked up by rescue craft, but did not hurry to get back on board - once the boat was righted, Robin just stepped aboard and sailed home....

For all those that did disappear early without paying for camping - we know who you are so settle up with the treasurer (before he catches up with you and adds commission!)

There's Those That Can...

Although Saturday started off muggy but overcast, a slight breath of wind was sufficient for the OD to gets the boats on the water. In the time it took to set the line and get the boats out, the wind shifted through 150° and the handicap was able to raise spinnakers for the start. Neil Currie was at the port end of the line and took best advantage of the breeze as it filled in. When Steve Hunt gybed for clear air he realised that he had not rigged the genniker correctly and handed the helm to Ruth while he made good his mistake. Andy Wilcox in his RS600 took the lead for a while but was passed by William and Lesley who managed to hold off Steve for a further lap. Mike Moore tagged on in his F15 to win on handicap.

The second race did start with a windward leg, Neil and Robin both had flying starts but William, who was squeezed off the line, tacked up the starboard edge of the course for clear air, took advantage of the wind shift and took the lead until the final run the finish when Steve again pulled through to the lead.

As for the headline, Sunday was not a day for the feint hearted. A good easterly breeze, strengthened with a southerly at  times, greeted sailors as they arrived on a glorious summers day. The first reach to 7 took the fleet under the shade of Skiddaw, and led to all sorts of shifts and down draughts - one of which caught out Mark and Kirsty, but a text book manoeuvre had their boat righted in no time. Robbie D and Toggle fought their way to 7 and led for the rest of the race with Neil and Judith Currie on their tail - the rest of the fleet being left some hundreds of yards behind!

The afternoon race looked promising - had the wind settled down - no chance! Even though the course stayed in the bay there were some wicked shifts and downdraughts that led to several capsizes, some spitting out their dummies and others laughing! Neil Currie was in the right place at the right time when a gust that headed 45° let him get around a wing mark while Robbie D had to avoid Steve Hunt's bowsprit in a very near miss. Several more shifts like this proved too much for 'Steam' Hunt, and although he sailed the course with a loss of heart he retired from his second race of the day.

Robbie continued to nibble away at Neil Currie and took advantage of one of the few legs that turned into a run, so when Neil went right, Robbie went left and took the lead.

Weekend Series

Well, half a series anyway until someone updates me!

Saturday had some wonderful sailing conditions, sunny with a reasonable wind. Those that sailed had to put up with a strange starting procedure , or not as the case may be! First of all the F15 flag was raised (and then surreptitiously replaced with the handicap flag), there was a signal at +5 mins (seemingly the handicap start, but the handicap fleet all set off when they thought they should (at +6) and shortly after starting another signal, apparently that was the GP start, not that many realised it!. Although Steve Hunt wasn't sure whether it was shifty it must have been, because William and Lesley trounced him up the first beat. Not to worry thought Steve, I'll catch him off wind, but sailing under Mark's lee was not the best idea in the world and William pulled away a bit more. It was to be on the second full lap that Steve was able to make use of one of those gusts that fills in from behind to pass William off wind.

In the second GP race, Dave and Sarah Nicholson were so amazed to find themselves in the lead that they missed out a mark! No ones fault, just too much excitement! In the handicap fleet Steve held the lead for the full race, but for a change he didn't continue to widen the gap, William homed in on Steve despite having no kicker for the final two legs. However, on handicap, the results were quite close and there was quite a jumble of classes with Ian Macpherson taking first place.

GP14 Open Meeting 9th/10th July

1st clear start on Saturday!
Bean and Toggle protecting their winning position Mike Fairlamb and Eric Smith show the way in race 2

The sun shone, and despite the high pressure system, the wind filled in for a strong fleet of 21 boats for this weekend's open meeting.

Sailors were so keen that for each race it was a case of third time lucky, as there were two general recalls, and it was only the round the ends rule that seemed to hold boats back behind the line.

In the first race Phil Smith and Mike Cowan (Bean and Toggle) made it to the windward mark first, and broke away only to be passed later in the race by Dave and Lynn Lawson. However, on the final run before the finish, Dave and Lynn gybed in front of Bean and then had to do a 720 enabling Bean to take the lead which he carefully protected up the final beat.

When the fleet got away on the second race, Bean, and sailing secretary Hugh Godfrey were the only boats over the line which threatened to scupper their chances. However, a split shift up the first beat meant there was some interesting positions at the windward mark - Mike Fairlamb with Eric Smith took the lead, Hugh had managed to pull back to fourth, while Bean was 20th! Visitor Martin Brennan from Hollingworth succeeded in taking the lead and won the race, while Bean managed to pull back to 6th. Consistent sailing by Dave Lawson left him in pole position overnight.

It was to be a beautiful Summer's evening, with a mirror flat calm. Perhaps the heat was getting to some, but there appeared to be some Arabs and Turkish Delights wandering around the club house during the evening! It could have been something to be worried about with recent events in London, but in this case it was due to Michaela, our social secretary, arranging an Arabian Night.

Sadly, the belly dancing never got off the ground (a belly flop?!) - maybe just as well as there would have been some interesting images to portray!

Sunday morning came (and went) with very little wind, so an early lunch was had by all. When racing set off in the afternoon, it seemed as if the sea breeze was starting to kick in, but as all the boats cleared the line (no general recalls), the wind veered back to the North and left some marks without any wind. Dave and Lynn Lawson took an early lead, and seemed invincible, but that changed on the next main beat and they dropped several places. With the wind fading, and another race to get in, the OD hurriedly shortened the course, but the wind picked up and with the final leg turning into a run, it was to be a testing time for the OD as the leading six boats finished within a couple of boat lengths of each other.

The wind faded again, and swung, then swung back, and as time passed, the OD decided to call it a day. Of course, the sea breeze finally started to take effect - ah well.

So with two first in the bag, Bean and Toggle took the winners trophy, and runners up were Martin Brennan of Hollingworth, then Dave and Lynn Lawson.

Weekend report (Courtesy of Rhonwen)

Saturday saw some very fickle winds - strong one minute, nothing the next.  Three GPs and two handicap boats made it to the start line, which was in light winds, but half way up the first beat the gales hit.  In the GP fleet, Dave Nicholson made an excellent start and was in the lead for a while before Mike Fairlamb took the lead with Hugh Godfrey close behind.  Hugh gained on every downwind leg, but could not quite catch Mike who eventually stretched his lead and won the race after Hugh navigated into a hole.  In the handicap fleet, the wind proved too strong for Sam Hall in his laser and he retired to leave Robin Dawson to take victory.  In the second race, only the two GPs took to the water and again Mike made it first to the windward mark.  However, then the wind really got going and Hugh shot past underneath him at the gybe mark - 'What gybe mark? There ain't no way I'm gybing on this gust!'  The two boats were together going into the next gybe mark, but Hugh had water, meaning Mike could not bear away on the next huge gust and capsized instead.  Mike tried to claw back position, but with the wind lifting the water off the lake, settled for second place.  Overall, Hugh won the GP Spring Cup, and despite not sailing the last two races in the handicap fleet, Steve Hunt won the Barf Plate.

The wind had settled down a bit on Sunday and more boats made the start of the olympic course. Again it was a two boat race in the GP fleet.  This time Hugh made the better start (Mike was 3 minutes out in his timing!) and much to the astonishment of Mike, the guys on the committee boat and most importantly long suffering crew Rhonwen, Hugh started to cover tack Mike 10 yards over the start line!  All the way around the first lap, Hugh covered Mike, but then disaster struck - Hugh's main got caught round the rudder when going round the windward mark allowing Mike to catch up and then a bit of mis-communication at the spinnaker drop allowed Mike to get in front.  Hugh decided this was not on and so when Mike started cover tacking him, he tacked, and tacked, and tacked again, and again, and tacked again - so much so that after actually getting past Mike they both got so dizzy that they fell over in the bottom of the boat!  In the middle of it all, the jib-sheet outer covering split so the sheet would not cleat, prompting the usual sympathetic helm comments of 'You'll just have to hold it!'  Eventually Hugh made it to the windward mark first, but another spinnaker tangle let Mike in front again.  And so Mike won - by 3 seconds.

In the handicap race, Robin managed to beat Steve Hunt, but that's all the author knows, 'coz she was too busy tacking!

In the afternoon there was a round-the-lake race in which Steve, Robin and Mike Moore all got to the bottom of the lake at about the same time.   However, the return leg was dominated by Steve Hunt in his RS400.  He had finished the race and packed his boat up before the rest of the fleet was in sight!  Andy and Bean had sensibly decided not to take their 49er down the lake, but managed to hit a previously unknown shallow patch just off the end of the jetty and catapulted themselves towards the shore. 'Dad, can you make me a new centreboard?'

Congratulations to Dave and Lyne Lawson on finishing 14th (out of 205!) at Ullswater's Lord Birkett Memorial over the weekend - full report

Short and Sweet?

With eight races to get in over this weekend's series, there was a definite need for races to be short, but with the races being so short, there was little room to recover from mistakes so the results did not always seem so sweet. Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley tried to get all their mistakes over in one race by hitting a mark, and then later trawling their genniker (and for a change they didn't recover from it!).

Although Saturday started off with the forecast 10mph NE wind, it rapidly faded as racing progressed, with many holes that caused large time differences between first and last boats, in some cases the first boat was finished after 15 mins, but it was a further 15 mins before the last boat completed the same course! It was these varying results that caused personal handicaps to vary so much over the course of the weekend.

Sunday's forecast was 5mph SW wind, but we were blessed with bright sunshine, and a 10+mph SW, and with the wind strengthened by a sea breeze in the afternoon there was to be some thrills and spills. The first race started with a fly past by the Red Arrows on their way to the Whitehaven Maritime Festival.

Elaine Hunt, crewing for the first time this season with William, challenged husband Steve to make the lunch if he was first home - so when he retired (having trawled the genniker for the second time in a weekend) did he prepare the lunch - think not! He's usually a good bet for tipping the boat in when the wind blows a bit, but not today - he left that to the Wright brothers in a GP, and Alan Nicholson in the RS Vario. To make sure the race length could be controlled, the courses tended to small with short legs (who does that remind you of?!), which meant the windward mark was busy as the fleet had yet to split up, and it seemed as if as soon as spinnakers were up and set, it was time to gybe at the next mark, or take them down! Andy and Bean Smith were again trying to master their 49er, and tended to surprise a few boats as they crossed on opposite tacks - not a lot of room for mistakes.

All in all a busy, hard and challenging day; so for someone not sailing well (as Steve put it) Steve and Ruth did well enough to win the series!

Back to Front in More Ways Than One

Saturday's racing started in muggy conditions with a light southerly breeze. Stand in starter Adrian (initially) opted to moor the committee boat downwind of the starboard end of the line - was there something he knew that the sailors didn't? Well, by the end of the first lap the wind started to veer to the south west such that gennikers were deployed on the second 'beat', and by the end of the second lap the original beat had turned into a dead run.

The wind for the second race looked somewhat ominous, and only started to pick up just before the start tempting Scumper and Robbie D back on to the water at the three minute signal, but they had a five minute sail to the start line! All was not lost, because when the wind faded on the final lap, Scumper managed to break through to second position.

Sunday's weather was to be equally changeable. As the boats prepared for the first race the wind freshened from the south, and eased just as quickly. Sailors went out and then played follow my leader with the committee boat, which eventually set a short first beat to mark A, as the wind had again veered to the south west. The short beat led to a lot of congestion at the first mark, but it was to be the second beat to 9 that caused the greatest problems. Renowned for being a difficult mark to beat into, it certainly lived up to its reputation with numerous exceptional shifts to contend with as the wind came down vertically from Sale Fell and scattered in all directions. Scott Beattie was glad to have Mike Moore to race against, but less pleased when crew John Somerville commented 'ah that's good, Mike's through'!

By lunchtime the sun started to succeed in finding some gaps in the clouds, and the wind was strengthened by the sea breeze. As the wind increased to planing conditions, so did some tempers - first there was Neil and Judith Currie, and then Scumper and Kirsty! It's not certain whether there was some tension in Hugh and Rhonwen's boat (while Rhonwen was helming) - Well you'd think Hugh would know the difference between a genny sheet and a spinnaker sheet! The increased winds led to several capsizes (some by the same boats). Sarah Nicholson certainly picked her time to try crewing in an RS400 for Robbie D, but apart from having an introduction to the art of trawling with a genniker, seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience, and will no doubt nurse her finger blisters for days to come!

New Addition!

Congratulations to Mike and Elaine Fairlamb on their new arrival - a GP14 of course!

Saturday sailors benefited from bright sunshine whilst racing in a breeze that eased as the race went on. The wind continued to fade as the boats made their way ashore until the lake was mirror like, and the OD decided to abandon racing for the rest of the day.

But what a difference a day makes. Although Sunday started with no breeze, and no sun, Neil had read up on all the forecasts and was confident that the wind would come in (from the NW), so by noon racing  had started in a light breeze (from the NE!). Mark Somerville used some light weather tactics and had Ethan Dawson as crew, but we're led to believe that although Mark was controlling a lot of the sail movements, it was Ethan that effortlessly guided the pair to the windward mark first. No it wasn't just a fluke, because they managed to fend off Ethan's dad Robin (and his dad Toggle!?) for another couple of laps until they felt had proved a point and retired gracefully (but cold!).

The wind did freshen over time, and it seemed like there was to be a good race around the lake for the afternoon pennant race in aid of the RNLI. After a short beat to mark 4, the fleet headed south. Neil and Judith Currie gybed out from under the shadow of Skiddaw and sailed into stronger airs along the western side of the lake. They were soon ahead of the fleet, and Bill Smith with Phil Hodgkins in an RS800 were only able to follow in Neil's wake until they reached along the southern leg of the course between 12 and 13. The RS800 came into its own for a while and took the lead. Neil opted for the western shore again only to lose out to Robin and Toggle (and hear that fateful phrase from Judith - you've sailed here long enough to know not to sail under that hill!). Perhaps fortuitously for some crews, the wind eased as the fleet made their way back up the long beat long home.

It turned out to be a race for the RS400s as they took the first 4 positions overall. Christina Sedgwick was noticed as having finished a round the laker race with a smile having crewed her first race in an RS400 with William, packed the boat away, showered and changed before son Jonathan made it to the finish line in his GP!

Rich Critchley had hoped to get a mention on this website by winning a race while crewing for Mark Somerville, but it was not to be. However, he can have a mention for turning up several hours late on Saturday evening only to find his sister Ruth had only come up to sail for a day, and was already nearly home!

Flying Fifteen Inland Championship

The Flying Fifteen Inland Championship was held at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club on 4/5 June. 32 boats came from as far afield at Loch Earn in Scotland and Bala in Wales. Saturday saw moderate westerly winds with a few testing gusts thrown in. The OD started the race on time and the fleet got away cleanly first time. Mike Hart with Tim Hall (Port Dinorwic) lead at the windward mark and left the rest a considerable distance behind by the end of the first lap, but behind him places were changing all the time with Steve Goacher with Phil Evans (Windermere) making up most places. On the last beat, Mike was still in front, but Steve was gaining all the time. Good tactics up the last beat gave the race to Steve by about a foot.

The races were sailed back to back, but a few sailors need to come ashore – including Keith Thomas from Bass who was last seen leaving the jetty on a rescue boat with a full tool box including drill, and heading back out to his boat to make running repairs!

Unfortunately the rain came in for the second race, but that did not dampen the spirits of the competitors. Another clean start saw Steve first to the windward mark and then increase his lead on every leg to notch up another victory. Alan Bax with Paul Busby (Hayling Island) didn’t have a brilliant first beat, but steadily improved up to second.

The sailors came ashore to afternoon tea and cream cakes followed in the evening by a fantastic BBQ – for which the rain held off.

Sunday had light winds forecast, but there was definitely enough wind to sail and the OD took to the water early to make sure the course kept in the wind. Unfortunately the wind was a bit shifty leading to a postponement due to a 60 degree wind shift. The wind shifted back and a start was made, but this resulted in a general recall. The start line was moved into steadier wind up the beat and the fleet got away cleanly at the next time of asking.

At the windward mark, Steve was in the lead, with Neil Platt in second, Justin Waples with Ian Stowe (Grafham) in third and Dave & Sue Giles (Ullswater) in fourth. However there was a bit of a melee as the boats were heading off on a run through the still beating rest of the fleet – even the lead boat had trouble getting through the fleet! To avoid the beating boats, the first few boats round the mark reached off on starboard, but some of the later boats gybed immediately and went off on port, giving them water at the next gybe mark – including local veteran Mike Watson who made up about 8 places on this short leg. There were frantic shouts of water at the gybe mark, but most boats seemed to get through ok. Meanwhile, Steve was extending his lead at the front. There was a short second beat, but this seemed to sort out the fleet, some gaining several places. Steve remained in the lead, but several other boats were being caught by Neil Platt. Then there was almost a disaster for Steve as he headed for the wrong mark. Fortunately he realised in time and gybed back to it, but his lead was reduced to about 30yds. On the last beat, the leading boats took the port side of the beat, with the next few opting to chance it up the starboard side. In the end, however, the positions remained the same with Steve winning, Justin second, Mike Hart third and then a very close finish with Dave McKee & Chris Hewkin (Dovestone) beating David & Peter Kitchen (Tees & Hartlepool) by a second.

In the final race, Steve had opted for an early lunch. The fleet was too keen and the general recall flag was raised – followed not long after by the black flag. The fleet split up the beat, some by a long way. Flying Fifteen president Ian Preston overshot the mark prompting the comment ‘He could raise his spinnaker to get to the windward mark’ from one of the race committee!

Nigel Tullet with Sam Raynor (Windermere) were first to the windward mark followed very closely by Alan and local Paul Burnell with Joe Roberts and then Neil Platt and another local, Scott Beattie. In the middle of the fleet, the competition was still very tight prompting many shouts of starboard and boats ducking behind others. As the fleet went down the reach, the sun tried to come out and was glinting off the spinnakers. The boats in 5th and 6th went high on the reach and gained places. Nigel remained in the lead, although the next six places were changing frequently. Then, much to the astonishment of the spectators on the shore, Nigel made the same mistake Steve had done in the previous race – he headed for the wrong mark. This lost him his lead as he had overshot a leeward mark by about 100 yds. However, this did serve to compact the first seven boats again, making for some exciting sailing up the next beat.

Alan made the most of the opportunity and won the race, followed by Mike Hart and then Nigel.

Wind of Change

Mark and Andy - Safety gear is paramount!Saturday started off with so much winfd (not a spelling mistake!) that no-one was prepared to take their own boats out. However, it didn't stop the younger generation (and Toggle) from trialling out the alternate BSC (Bathenswaite Swimming Club). With the aid of £25k worth of boats the, intrepid swimmers were rapidly taken out to the centre of the performance arena - but some couldn't wait and demonstrated the backward somersault water entry technique, allowing their craft to carry on sailing unaided for several yards. Front crawl appeared to be the favoured style for reuniting swimmer and craft. This, of course, became the second element of the routine - clambering over the smooth upturned hulls, and then flipping them through 180°, something which seemed to be carried out with such ease. However, some of the performers did enhance their performance by use of the safety crew! Additional props included the leeward shore as a safety refuge. There were some that attempted a full monty, a routine which included derigging their boats. At the moment, the jury's still out on this change of direction.

An early finish to the afternoon's activities left the 'swailors' with plenty of time to nurse their bruises (including egos?), and warm their bodies back up before partying the night away at a do to celebrate Claire's forthcoming 40th birthday. However, some did find enough energy to take part in the little heard of routine of pontoon bounce (if only to try and release a trapped chain) where several people (you guessed it) bounce in harmony at one end of the pontoon.

The karaoke was started by Claire and friends, but continued with solos from Rich and Jessica. No party would be the same without the Toggle influence (we're assured that the confidence factor is multiplied with the aid of several pints of Stella!), and of course he formed part of the finale, dedicating his song 'return to sender' to Tashman Willie

Bass Babes back in action

Toggle with an eye on Tashman Willie

It was to be daybreak before many finally reached their beds, after an evening that had suffered various casualties (Claire's knee, David's stomach, numerous heads!)

On Sunday, the wind eased somewhat, and the sun shone. Some of the highlights of the sailing included Jonathan Sedgwick giving mum Christina a dunking, and having to be towed ashore; Keith Thomas having to practice (several times) the scene from Titanic (without Kate Winslet) on the foredeck of his F15 to re-rig the spinnaker; Ian Campbell trying to get to grips with wineglass spinnakers while crewing for Scott Beattie; further capsizes by Bill Smith, John Halliday, and Paul Burnell - but somehow Steve Hunt managed to stay upright!

Clear skies on a bank holiday - It must have been a dream? However, the downside was that the lake was mirror like as seen on the early morning webcam picture. The wind did start to fill in late morning, but it was not from the forecast direction. The wind improved for the afternoon race with the help of a south westerly sea breeze.

Over the course of the weekend, Scott Beattie had obviously sorted out his 'novice' crew to win three races and the series. However, Joe Hardon and Keith Thomas had posed a threat in the morning race, having taken Mike Moore out on the start line his next target was Scott, and although he nearly succeeded, in the end he had to settle for a second place.

The GPs series was to be determined on the final race, with any one of four helms in with a chance. John Telford and Andy Smith with two wins and a 3rd for stepping in to be OD on Sunday, won the series from Dave and Lynn Lawson. Hugh Godfrey's valiant effort to defend his position while Monday's birthday girl, Rhonwen Bryce, was busy with head between her knees taking down the spinnaker, included a couple of gybes (not certain whether they were deliberate or not!).

The racing did start in a northerly breeze around noon, but it was a frustrating race with the wind fading and shifting considerably. In the handicap fleet, Robin Dawson and Toggle showed a clean pair of heels from Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley who were keen to secure the series before leaving early for a week's holiday. Robin's win meant that a win in the final race would take the series, but gear failure stopped Robin from getting to the starting line. The freshening wind helped William Carruthers and sister Claire get first to the windward mark, but it was not to last! Neil and Judith Currie wasted no time hoisting their kite, and took advantage of a gust to take the lead; similarly Mark Somerville and Steve Kirkpatrick carried a gust to get them into second position, then Phil and Rich Hodgkins went for a late drop of their kite to claim water at the mark. Claire had noticed a rip in the kite, perhaps that was to be an omen - time for an early finish? As the rip did not affect flying the kite, they carried on only to suffer a broken boom while beating, which led to a broken tiller and a capsize (time for another burgee?)- just goes to show that these things happen in threes! William's final dive across the boat while righting it seemed to shock the onlookers, but he came out of it in one piece (well no-one could tell the difference!)

This week's episode of Sailors' Wives, took the girls to Cockermouth fair, where Linda got more than she bargained for when she offered to accompany Emily on one of the rides. A set of cowboy hats later and they were ready for anything - just as well, since on the way back Linda came to the fore as a cow girl when she helped protect a stray bullock from on-coming traffic.

The day was finished off with the launch of the new committee boat helmed, of course, by Herb with the assistance of Keith Thomas and Alan Smith, and watched by a crowd of onlookers. Some minor alterations are required before it will be put in service, but if the cuddy stays (complete with gas stove), future ODs will come off the water with a warm inner glow. In the meantime, perhaps it should be trips around the bay, or trips to see the Osprey!

Celebrity Glass Trophy

After heavy overnight rain had cleared, the sun came out with the wind was from an ominous south westerly direction. Alan Nicholson was first to fall foul to one of the sudden windshifts, and capsized before racing started. Roy and Michaela did a bit of larking around on the start, forcing Ian Macpherson over the start line prematurely. (Turns out that Roy didn't even know how long to the start!). Next casualty of the day, apart from William and Lesley who were first to the windward mark only to get their downwind tactics wrong and let three RS400s through in one leg, was Nigel  and Laura in a GP when they gybed and capsized at the second mark. The third casualty was to be robin and Toggle when the wing wangs jambed, leaving their pole drooping to starboard (not a pretty sight, and fairly ineffective on port tack!).

There were to be more casualties in the second race - Roy and Michaela suffered rigging problems before the race and had to beach their boat to get the jib back up. All was obviously not well, because before the race was over, their main was flogging at half mast!

Another casualty of the day was the F15 fleet, as another boat is due to leave the club with the sale of Ian Campbell's boat.

Sunday racing was held in strengthening south westerly winds, with beats into the notorious mark 9 - never think you're on the lay line, as the winds will only shift to prove you wrong. The tight reaches tested the asymmetrics - should they bear away and take the gust, or try to continue to fly the genniker during near close hauled conditions.

In the afternoon race Toggle stated that he and Robin were doing a demonstration sail, shame they were so far ahead that no-one could see how they did it. In fact, they were doing so well, that they lapped the tail enders, and of course won the race on handicap. Alan Nicholson finished the weekend the way he had started - with a capsize!

When the results for the weekend were calculated on a fleet basis, the overall series went to Sunday's rescue boat driver - Steve Hunt (not that he hadn't worked for in the races that he had sailed)

Meanwhile, the Scottish Areas at Loch Ken who knows what was happening other than David and Lynne Lawson had a couple of wins under their belt, while Telf and Andy Smith were having a better Sunday than they had Saturday - perhaps they found some Scottish lubrication overnight?

Ginge and Jose made a sharp exit from the Scottish areas and decided to 'have a cup of tea' in a field - they must have been frantically stirring the tea to get so stuck in the mud!

Handicap Open Meeting

Excellent turnout of 33 boats, 29 in the fast handicap fleet and the rest in the slow handicap fleet. The first race started with strong winds for the first lap but eased and backed to the north east which led to some very tight reaches. 59er was the first to the windward mark, with Robin Dawson and Toggle Cowan second in their RS400 (will we ever hear the last of this one?) but they soon took the lead. John Riley had an excellent first beat in an RS300.

The first slow handicap race was dominated by the Emma Houlihan and Holly Scott from RWYC in their Mirror.

A wind shift just before the start of the second race meant several boats only just managed to cross the line on starboard tack. Robin Dawson was not so lucky, and he ended up attached to the inner port marker. Neil Currie and Phil Smith in an RS400 were first to the windward mark with a clear lead. Steve Hunt with Becky Dawson had taken the right route up the beat this time, with William Carruthers and Lesley Braddock not too far behind (at that stage!). Neil Currie benefited from a very fast reach to increase his lead. M Fearnley in his 59er started to pull back on Neil on the second lap, and D Sykes in an RS400 from Ullswater pulled through to second RS400. I Baillie in his RS300 had had a good first beat and continued to maintain his position as the race went on. Scumperjack with Joe Roberts in an RS400 made ground on several boats

The slow handicap fleet had a good start with all but Mike Chappell on port tack! The Hemmingway brothers in their RS Feva cleared a 200 yard lead on the first beat, followed by Sam Hall in his Topper. The Mirror girls closed in on the RS Feva as the wind eased, and eventually took the lead. Sam Hall did pass the RS Feva only to be overtaken again some time later.

A late night, drinking the bar dry, probably due to several people trying to keep their throats lubricated for the karaoke. Word has it that Elvis (who is known to live in the Maryport area) was in the building and gave a late night rendition of who knows what! Perhaps fortunately, the wind was slow to get up for Sunday's early start, and it was 1pm before it had settled down to the forecast westerly direction, which gradually picked up as the afternoon's racing continued.

Steve Hunt, with regular crew Ruth Critchley, was back on form in the lighter winds and was first to the windward mark, having taken benefit of the shifts on the port side of the beat. Neil Currie and Dave Sykes were close on Steve's transom, but the mass of boats that followed blanketed each other from the few gusts that were passing through, leaving the leaders to break away from the fleet. The close reach along the bottom of the course favoured the single handed boats. The leaders continued to have a good race, and Dave Sykes broke through to second on the next beat. However, tricky winds around the windward mark gave Robin Dawson a chance to pick the best route and move into third position. Mark Fearnley in the 59er continued to nibble away at the leading boats and succeeded in crossing the line first. Some close racing in the RS400s resulted in Dave Sykes pipping Robin Dawson on the line, and closely followed by Neil Currie - with just six seconds between them all. Andy Downie in a Phantom had an excellent final lap taking six places. It was to be Steve Hunt that would win the race on handicap.

With the final race being held back to back, no-one knew the effects of the handicaps on everyone's position, or who they should cover. The wind was continuing to freshen, and the Mark Fearnley in his 59er was first to the windward mark, followed by Andrew Elliott in a Blaze, and a Phantom. The run to the next mark led to some tactical gybing to pick up the gusts. The lead boat managed to lose its way on the next beat(!), but it had no detrimental effect on the leading 59er. Racing continued to be very close, and it was the next reach which helped to break the pack a little, with Mark Fearnley narrowly escaping capsizing on one of the gusts. Chris Whiteley in his Phantom held a good, threatening, position throughout the race and the adjusted results gave him first position. No one could afford to ease up on the final beat, and some gusts almost caught out the Phantoms, while the 59er was close to capsizing to windward in an unexpected hole!

Overall Winner Chris Whiteley Winners of the slow handicap fleet - Emma Houlihan and Holly Scott

The Things People Do

Some people will do anything to get a mention. How about the young boy's ball that is kicked on to the lake and drifting away on the off shore breeze. Good Samaritan tries to retrieve it but can't reach, so finds a canoe, paddles out to catch ball, and then struggles to return to shore - perhaps too much energy expanded for one day? Well done Toggle

More Wind!

Saturday started out blustery, and seemed to get worse as the afternoon went on. John Crosby and John Halliday, both in RS400s, capsized before reaching the start area. Shortly after the start, the wind picked up, the rain and hail came down, and the sailors all started to wonder why we love the sport so much! However, that squall passed through (and the sun came out), but it did not stop Scumper and T coming a cropper at the first gybe mark. Steve and Ruth were soon to follow - something that was to be a bit of a bad habit by the end of the day - five capsizes - that should teach Steve not to tease Kayla about the likelihood of going swimming. William decided that it was not a good day to get a extension stuck in his shorts (tiller extension that was!!), however, he did somehow manage to get it out without a forced tack that could have left him sitting on the wrong side of the boat. The results in the first race were very close, with Scumper beating Mike Moore by just a second on handicap.

Sunday wasn't a lot different - loads of squalls, capsizes (yes Toggle is starting to perfect his crawl), sunshine, and hailstones! The boats that held the gusts were in for some screaming reaches - just as well there's no speed limit on Bass. Border TV reappeared to film some more shots for return of the Summer wine - this week's stars being Foggy Dewhirst, and an interjection by one of Grumpy old men (or was that Shunty on a bad day?). The OD having wound up various helms up in the first race by starting without many of them, decided to have an endurance test in the afternoon and kept them going until there were only four boats left. Apart from those that aren't aching too much with the odd bruise, or strained muscle, everyone should sleep well tonight.

Next weekend is the open meeting for fast and slow handicap boats as well as lasers and mirrors. Hopefully the weather will be kind  - first race 1300hrs.

Congratulations to Pete Lawson and Dennis Swain on finishing 4th in the May bank holiday weekend's Enterprise Inland Championship at Rutland Water

What a Weekend!

Saturday started off with plenty of sunshine, but a lack of wind. Bridget was the OD and was determined to start racing on time, and made sure everyone knew that. So she and Ginge went out, set the line and everyone was getting ready for the novelty(!) of a race that was going to start on time, but even with 10 minutes to go the postponement flag went up, and that was to be it for the afternoon - a case of all dressed up and nowhere to go (or at least no wind you take you there)

Rain set in over night, and the winds picked up. By early Sunday morning the rain had disappeared, and campers were looking forward to a good force 6 southerly. However, that all changed and by 0930, there was thunder, lightning, and torrential rain! The weather front did pass through and racing started on time (or thereabouts!) with seven GPs and  half a dozen handicap boats. Steve Hunt with heavy weather crew Andy Wilcox gave the others a bit of a chance by capsizing on the first beat, but before the second beat he had taken advantage of the gusting winds to break back through to the lead. As the race was shortened, the wind swung to the SW, and increased substantially - there was some flattening gusts that took out Joe and Sally Roberts, and Dave and Sarah Nicholson in their GPs. One of Saturday's postponed races followed before lunch, this time William Carruthers and Lesley Braddock gybed for a gust of wind which took them out of the race (and they donated another burgee to Neptune).

The afternoon race took the competitors around the lake, and it tempted out some F15 sailors. Scott Beattie was in a competitive spirit and eager to get started - however, he was so early that he took several others over the line and had to return. With the SW wind, it was to be typically challenging. with gusts and lulls in the lee of Sale Fell.

Ian Campbell crewed for Mike Moore in a F15 and was treated to a bit of a dunking when the wind dropped suddenly and they heeled to windward - not that he minded too much about getting wet as he was fully kitted out in other people's clothes! Did Scott have a jet ski fixed to his boat, or was it just the wash created by the rudder as he tried to bear away in one of the gusts?

Bill Smith with Phil Hodgkins in an RS800 struggled to cope with the variable conditions upwind, but made up for it on the 3 mile run back down the lake. Steve Hunt broke away from the rest of the fleet and fell in to the trap of believing he was ok. However, his lead was continually nibbled away until back at Scarness where William was side by side with him and F15s were catching up. Steve spotted a gust of wind, gybed and 30 seconds later was 400 yards ahead.

Robin Dawson and Toggle Cowan were getting to grips with their new RS400 - the question was asked how long the wind indicator would last? The answer was to be not even a day! They survived the first capsize without too much problem. But what was Toggle doing - front crawl? Not that easy in a wetsuit! The winds increased as the boats were back in the northern bay, and several boats were flattened by one squall. This led to Robin and Toggle's next capsize, with mast in the mud they realised that an RS400 isn't the easiest boat to right in such conditions.

What would Monday offer? - A queue of people offering to be OD or do rescue duty to secure a 3rd in the day's two race series! This was because the gusting conditions and white horses created a lot of apathy, but there were some takers, and a few more (believing the wind was easing) set off from shore even as the race started. The overall strength of wind may have eased, but the gusts continued to pick off boats one by one. Perseverance, and no capsizes, by Mike Moore gave him first place on handicap. The lunch time break, with bright sunshine, helped convince several of the morning's spectators that conditions were just right for a good blast around the bay. Little did they know that afternoon OD Ian Preston was to set a course with 64 beats in it! The Hodgkin boys found a good way to spill wind; the first reach took out Rory Yardley, Robin and Toggle (this time practising breaststroke), Des and Martin Wright, and Sam Hall (but he continued for another couple of capsizes before retiring); Neil Currie and Phil Smith opted to capsize rather than surf on to the shore.

Just two days sailing resulted in a chipped tooth for Rhonwen, a fractured knuckle for William, and a broken mast for the Hodgkins - What more could anyone ask for?!

Fleet Challenge

This year a different format has been adopted for this series in that we are trying out having eight short races over a weekend.

Before the start of the first race, the gusty conditions was sufficient to make Paul Burnell and Neil Currie think twice about even hoisting their sails. But were they right? On the first beat one gust that came through flattened Steve Hunt (well he did comment that if it's windy he expects to capsize), Jim Christie and Rory Yardley, but by the end of the beat, William Carruthers was in the lead, the wind had died, and the rest of the fleet were bunching and drifting around the windward mark. You would think there was little room for error due to having such short races, but Steve Hunt, despite capsizing, spotted the wind filling in and was soon back in the lead. The rest of the afternoon's racing continued in a bit of a stop start manner, with Hugh Godfrey emerging as the overnight leader. As he was OD for Sunday's racing, would it be cancelled while he is ahead?!

Sunday morning was beautiful, sunny with a slight breeze, something that we haven't been used to for a while. The breeze picked up for the second of the morning races, but over lunchtime it faded to nothing, so it was indeed time to abandon racing for the day. However, by this time Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley had secured another couple of firsts and the series.

Bridget Plays Away!

Yes Bridget was playing away and flying the Bass burgee at Annandale this weekend (but, of course, it was with Ginge). Ok so the weather frightened off many competitors, and those that did compete didn't try more than once. But Ginge knew Bridget was in the mood and he went out for all he could get, but it was worth it as they managed to stay upright all the time, and came away with the winners trophy.

Meanwhile, Telf and Andy went to Chase for their GP open, but sticking with a healthy diet wasn't what was needed for the force 5 - They were leading the first race until the wind picked up and overpowered their 'slight' bodies! Bagging two 3rds and a 4th gave them a respectable 5th overall out of 30 boats. Two firsts by Andrew Hately gave him the series. In for a penny? - Telf and Andy will be testing their skills at Satunton Harold for the Midlands this weekend.

Celebrity Glass Trophy

While the south of the country basked in some warm spring weather this weekend, Bass didn't! However, with a snow covering on the surrounding hills, there was a beautiful backdrop for those boats that did venture out . Drysuits (for most!), with several layers of warm clothing underneath, and hats or balaclavas, it was more like a frostbite series. There were many good gusts over the weekend, but there some compensatory holes as well!

Saturday's racing was monopolised by Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley, who secured the first beats then broke away off wind, leaving other RS400s to fight it out with some close racing. Alan Nicholson was the first of the weekend to capsize, but he wouldn't be the only one! Paul Burnell and Tim Chittenden did well to recover from one gybe after filling the boat a little.

As predicted, Roy's curry on Saturday led to a lot more wind on Sunday. Much to Ruth's relief, Steve had left to go to work, so Mark Somerville with Andy Thomas had some good racing against William Carruthers and Lesley Braddock. It tended to be a case of whoever made the least mistakes came out on top. Andy T, new to the RS, struggled to hoist the kite in one gust, so it was their turn for a swim, but they quickly recovered and were soon back on the pace. But the holes that were there on Saturday, came back with a vengeance and when coupled with big shifts, there were a few nervous crews around. Andy T was treated to a further capsize while gybing.

Whether it was nervous exhaustion, or increasingly gusty winds, but several sailors opted out of the afternoon race, leaving only three takers. There was an ominous start for William and Lesley when they capsized just off the end of the jetty while trying to sort out the rudder, but they managed to get to the line just after the starting signal. Mark was first to the windward mark but opted not to fly the kite on the first couple of reaches, however William and Lesley took the chance on the second reach and quickly caught up with Mark. However, David and Lynn Lawson in their GP were not far behind. After a short beat to 9, Mark took no chances and flew the kite, although William tried it he soon realised he couldn't lay the mark and took it down again. Mark came a cropper when taking the kite down at the gybe mark allowing the other two boats through. Everyone persevered for another lap, but it was on the final gybe when that William capsized (for the first time during a race - well it had to happen sometime!). Not a good time to get stuck in the mud! David was first to finish followed by Mark. Righting William's boat led to the question how many people does it take to get a boat out of the mud - two rescue crew, the official starter, OD (and his assistant!), and another crew brought from the shore!

The results show some consistent sailing, but also, that the 3 points given to an OD for giving up racing for a day, were sufficient to secure good positions in a series - David, Saturday's OD, coming first overall with Neil, Sunday's OD, finishing second

Question is, how long will those men in their shorties survive?

Like Father, Like Son?

A cold, bleak and blustery day greeted the few hardy sailors that were prepared to venture out for the start of the Max Joule Memorial Trophy series that commenced this weekend. Several people couldn't believe their eyes when William again turned out in his shorty - but was there method in his madness, as after racing so many women came up and said your legs must be frozen (well they did look a funny shade of blue!) that they had to have a rub of his legs! That seemed fine until Toggle had a rub as well!

As for the racing, Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley were the first to come a cropper after realising that it's best to uncleat the sheet when tacking in such windy conditions. It was not long before Ginge and Jose were standing on their centreboard trying to get the mast out of the mud. Meanwhile, Mark and Kirsty had an excellent first beat, but Kirsty was too petrified to risk flying the genniker, which enabled William and Lesley to break through into the lead for what should have been a very short race as OD Roy Blackburn had not indicated there was more than one lap when the course was displayed. However, as if by magic at the end of that first lap, the course was suddenly x4 laps. Roy tried to assure everyone that it had been amended before the start, but some of us are not so sure! So on with the racing it was. This gave Steve Hunt to pull back through the fleet, Rich and Phillip a chance to capsize on the beat, and then follow in father's footsteps and get their mast stuck in the mud, John Telford and Andy Smith retired because they had a loose screw (sounds fun?!), and Nigel and Laura were the third boat to get their sails covered in that blue clay.

The second race was somewhat tamer in that the wind had eased, but there was some close racing with Mark and Toggle powering up the beats only to lose out to Steve and Ruth off wind. William and Lesley tagged along, but didn't quite get the wind at the right time. Ah well.

Return of the Summer Wine?

The weather may not have been very summery - a mixture of rain, hail, thunderstorms, sun and high winds, but it did not stop Wednesday's production of a TV special. Yes, those old faithfuls, Compo, Clegg and Nora Batty will be appearing in a Border special about adventures on the river Derwent, with a particular slant on Bassenthwaite! It is understood that Sid and Ivy could be making an appearance as well.

As for the casting, well it is a Border special, so you'll just have to watch this space to find out more!? You can't be certain that these photos give you any clues because you wouldn't expect 'darlings' to get wet/take chances, so stand ins were used

100% Success

Adrian's first sail of the season on Saturday, after the handicaps were calculated, resulted in a win with 14 secs to spare, but would it continue? The changeable winds over the course of racing resembled polos somewhat (due to the holes in the middle?!), but the warm airs made many people (apart from Ruth who seemed to reckon she was suffering from frostbite in her toes!) feel overdressed as they became very hot and bothered. It could be why tensions were high in the GP14 fleet, with various post race discussions concerning the rulebook, and Dave Nicholson's new boat suffered its first two collisions - the first is always the worst.

Sunday morning looked as if there was going to be a good southerly to take us through the day, but all of a sudden, half an hour before the scheduled start, the wind eased and started to veer to the south-west. Racing got underway, with the wind easing and continuing to veer. By the windward mark some boats that had headed for the western shore were able to fly their spinnaker into the mark! Pockets of wind came and went, but it didn't stop Steve Hunt in his RS400 breaking away from the fleet, but Dave Lawson in his GP was not far behind When OD.Nigel Lewis decided to shorten course, Steve had had enough and just headed for home (not even because Ruth's feet were cold).

After lunch the wind had filled in and settled in the South West, which meant there was going to be a long hard beat down the lake for the first pennant race of the season. It was Steve Hunt, Neil Currie and William Carruthers in their RS400s that were first to the windward mark, and apart from Neil taking a detour under Sale Fell they would have held those positions all the way down the lake. At the southernmost wing mark confusion reigned with Steve rounding it to starboard, William to port (well it was what Lesley had written down, and the logical way to go round it!), and then Neil, having recovered from his detour, confirmed that the course required a starboard rounding. As usual, Steve disappeared on the downwind leg home, but William and Neil had a good battle to the finish. Believe it or not, there were other boats in the fleet, and Mike Moore at one stage realised that he hadn't been taking best advantage of the shifty winds when Adrian (in his Fifteen this time) appeared alongside. Final results were calculated on a personal handicap basis, with first position going to Dave and Lynn Lawson.

Eggseptional weekend

Dave Ovington (Bass Week 2004)After a busy start to the bank holiday weekend, many were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death on Easter Sunday of a long time friend of the club, Dave Ovington. Dave and his family have been to Bass Week for as long as we all care to remember, one of the few holidays he took from his busy boat building business. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

When Emily turned out for the first race of the season in a shortie William was accused of child abuse! - just because William (as well as Andy and Phil Smith) always wears one, was it appropriate for his 13 year old daughter? Ok, the water is still cold, but is anyone really planning on going for a swim in it, I think not.

Indeed, although there were some near misses, no-one has yet claimed the prize for the first capsize of the season.

Bridget, realised that when her son said her drysuit had a leak he meant it! She only found out when she went out for a sail and found she was getting wet (but not her gnatsy gants!), so it was a trip to Nichol End to spend Ginge's credit card (which he happened to leave there!) - word is he could be getting more than an Easter egg this weekend.

As for the sailing, the turnouts were indeed eggseptional for the start of the season, especially in the handicap fleet which has been strengthened by the arrival of Paul Burnell with an RS400. Visitors from Leigh and Lowton topped up the fleet as well (even though they don't appear in the results - mean aren't we?).

Although it was a bit overcast, many sailors turned up for the first race of the season, as did the wind. As many sailors realised that their sailing kit had shrunk during the winter, others sailed in shorts - not a sight everyone welcomed! 18 boats made it to the start line to compete for the Starters prize, although with a good wind blowing it was more a case of who would capsize first. After two good races the first trophy of the season went to Robin Dawson (Cockermouth) and Mike Cowan (Crosby) and everyone was still waiting for the first capsize of the season.

Easter Sunday saw the breeze strengthen for the start of the club championship, and this led to the first capsize of the season by Phil Hodgkins (Brigham) and Jon Sedgwick (Cockermouth). The youngest sailor of the weekend – Katrina Knowles, aged 8 from Brigham took to the water with her dad on Sunday, although the strong breeze meant that she didn’t complete the race.

After a delay on Monday while the wind filled in the racing continued and with positions all to race for strong sailing continued. After four races the Flying Fifteen trophy was won by Mike Moore and Ian Smith (Whitehaven). The GP14 fleet Bass Tankard was won by Dave and Lyn Lawson (Kendal) with Hugh Godfrey and Rhonwen Bryce (Whitehaven) in 2nd place. The handicap fleet was won by the Vice Commodore Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley with Neil and Judith Currie (Cockermouth ) in 2nd place.

In total 24 boats were on the water over the weekend, and of course, there were some tales to tell.

First there was Andy and Phil Smith who unfortunately holed the hull of their 49er after a slight accident - no it wasn't wiping out another boat, or trying to leapfrog the pontoon, they just didn't get the boat lined up on the trailer!

Following in Mike Moore's footsteps, Sally Roberts wondered why she couldn't do her drysuit properly until she realised she still had a coat hanger in it!

If you know of any other incidents, don't forget to let me know as we love to share them with everyone else.

Party Time

Sunday
Shrek - eat your heart out! What was in that potion that I was drinking last night? Was I hallucinating? Was there really so many people, friends not just colleagues or acquaintances, down at the club in the middle of Winter drinking, chatting, reminiscing, looking forward to the new season. Some were even dancing - perhaps they had been drinking Claire and Stephen's potions as well.

'I'm coming out, I want the world to know' were the words in Diana Ross' song that inspired when I started writing these diaries. So with work behind me now, it was wonderful to be able to celebrate with so many. My way of thanking them for all the support and help that they are going to give me during my time as Commodore. But what did I say in that speech? Did the treasurer have to suggest that there was one person for each year of my life - that would make me 63¾ (unless I was seeing double)

Did I really see one of those cleavage's that I have dreamt about for so many years dangling over the trifle!? Arrhhh. Maybe it was just a dream.....

Adrian

Two into One - Don't Go!

An interesting shot of the merging of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite!

Thanks to Ann Bowker for this pic

Also, thanks to Ian Campbell for these additional shots of the high water level on Saturday.

Marooned!

Thanks to Alan Nicholson for the following photos taken yesterday showing a marooned clubhouse. Certainly the highest water levels recorded by any member (even us very long-standing ones!).

If you have (had?) a boat at the club, it could be worth getting down to check it out.

Don't Mention Bridget's Rear (Commodore)!

At the 53rd Annual General meeting, as Bridget stepped down after two years as Commodore, Mike Chappell was elected to replace her (is that really possible?). The full list of members voted on to Council for 2005 is detailed separately

The subscriptions were raised as proposed, and it was noted that other clubs' fees are typically 30-50% higher than ours.

The 40 % increase in NNDR is of concern and will be challenged at the appropriate time. Although we presently are granted 50% discretionary relief on NNDR, the possibility of obtaining 80% mandatory relief by becoming a Community Amateur Sports Club was aired at the meeting. It is clear that there are a lot of issues to address before firm recommendations can be submitted to the membership for approval.

Although the club is keen to use email as the cheapest form of communicating with members, it is not a requirement, and those members that prefer snail mail will continue to receive it.

The club continues to seek an 18' committee boat to replace the stolen Bates, so if you are aware of anything suitable get in touch with Alan Nicholson or Mike Chappell.

Keith Thomas gave a vote of thanks to Bridget for all her hard work and successes over the last two years.

It's All Over

The final race of the season got underway in light winds, Bill Smith in his RS800 took an early lead, and promptly headed for a wrong mark (as he does!), and ended up having his final capsize of the season. Heading for the wrong mark seemed to be a bit of a trait for the day, since with unused marks being removed, Michaela and Nigel mistook mark 4 for mark 3! Nigel also lost ground on the final leg when they lost a hat overboard and had to go back for it. First to finish was Rory Yardley, and followed shortly after by Alan Nicholson in an RS300. Jim Christie in a Vortex was slightly ahead of Nigel in his GP.

On handicap, it was Alan Nicholson that won the race from Nigel Lewis. However, this result did not affect the overall result for the 2004 Winter Trophy which was determined last week following Steve Hunt's win.
