The Flying 15 team racing had to wait for the winds to fill in (or was it just for the OD to arrive - perhaps he knew something the sailors didn't!). From the clubhouse, winds could be seen at the southern end of the lake, but they struggled to make any headway into the northern bay. So the OD set courses to suit. Once started the winds held well and there was some good racing when even Steve Goacher had to work his way through the fleet of 20 boats. The wind shadow caused by spinnakers on some of the dead runs helped shuffle boat positions, and the beats all had shifts/curves that gave opportunities to gain and lose places.
The weighted scoring system for older boats helped its deviser Ian Preston and team to pull through to second position after three races - pity the didn't get the last race right. Howard Green had Keels on Wheels on his sail, but sailed more as if he had wheels dragging from his keel!
That said, although there was a few grunts and groans on the water (and that was just aching bodies), everyone had a good weekends racing.
Last year's Grotty Potty winner, Miles, seemed spoilt for choice as to who should get the coveted award this year. As Miles was unable to accurately read the word PORT emblazoned on John Hardisty's hull, led to John being awarded the trophy for yet another year

With the onset of Autumn, the nip in the air resulted in a greater use of wooly bears and dry suits despite the winds being unusually light. After a closely fought race in the F15s, in which Scott's head started to spin after having to do turns for Mike Moore, Saturday's second race was cancelled due to lack of wind.Sunday morning wasn't much better for Scott when he tried to squeeze in at the start line but had to do more turns for Ian Campbell. A wind shift at the second mark enabled Wendy Somerville to take the lead from William Carruthers, Ian Campbell took advantage of the situation also, and then passed William and Wendy. Mike Moore wasn't to miss out on taking the lead when he sailed a fine beat on the following leg. The lead continued to change, and Scott quickly caught up to have his chance at the front of the fleet. Later in the race Ian Campbell had to do turns for William, a mistake from which he didn't recover! On the final leg Wendy took advantage of a small wind shift and pipped Scott at the post.
Wendy took an early lead in the final race, only to be passed by Ian. When Ian and Wendy started to round a mark the wrong way, William took advantage of the situation and took the lead through to the end of the race.
All in all some very close racing.

Congratulations to John and Lucy Telford on the belated birth of their first child Jack James.
A poor forecast dampened enthusiasm for the weekend's sailing, Bridget stresses that she did manage to sail two days in a row though and is lying 4th in the championship.
The Bass Burgee was Sunday's pennant race, held in a good Southerly that took the fleet to the top of the lake. It may have been a hard slog up, but the reaches back down made it all worthwhile. John Halliday was enjoying one reach so much that he missed out a mark rather than take down his gennaker. Rory Yardley in a Vortex battled against Neil Currie and Toggle in an RS400 upwind, but pulled well away off wind to win on handicap.

Did Bridget wet her pants write her
speech? Well it was needed, because we did it - after a nerve wracking final two
hours (from the remoteness of the website!), in which Bolton kept closing the
gap, we won the 24 hour race for the 2nd time with several minutes to spare.
Well done to all our team, and their managers and supporters on an excellent job well done.
The sponsorship from Lloyds Motors of Cockermouth is greatly appreciated. If they can provide us with a boat next year (or a suit of sails will do), so much the better!!!
It's a tough trophy to defend, but I'm sure we'll be there again next year.
A message from the competition:
Well done Bass. Whatever dance you did to get the wind back in the last hour certainly worked!! Also, how much did you pay the larks off to drop the protest?? Seriously though, it was a cracking finish and well done to Phil for keeping it together.... just.
All the best from Dale and the lads and lasses at Bolton SC.

The Lake District had the best of the weather on Saturday. Some contestants, from as far afield as Penzance, almost aquaplaned through water laden motorways on their way up. Here are a selection of pictures from the first race which saw local helm Pete Lawson take the lead from the end of the first beat through to the finish.
Race two proved devastating for those helms that did not know their port from their starboard, and rounded the windward mark the wrong way (despite there being a lead boat!). Mike Birch won race two following a big lift on the final beat which knocked Pete Lawson down to third.
Glorious blue skies and a terrible forecast for Sunday! Despite some gusts from the South West as the course was being prepared, the Southerly wind held, and increased at times, for the rest of the day. Again, there was some excellent racing throughout the three races of the day. There was the odd capsize (well by Mike Birch to be precise!), and one when the helm fell out of the boat.
The overall winner was Chris Fry from Hallamshire who beat Bass' Pete Lawson by one point.

A 360° view from Bass Week
Monday's racing started with a major wind shift on the first beat that shuffled the normal finishing order somewhat, but left the race without a beat and little chance for catching up - or so you would think. The forecast breeze came in at lunchtime, and promptly faded in time for the afternoon race. The shifts were there for the taking, if only you could get to them!

The weekend finished with a pennant race around the lake. The race for the Banana Stakes, presented by former Trustee Bill Anderson, was run on a personal handicap basis. There were mixed fortunes throughout the race, firstly, Mike Moore tried his best to luff Ian Campbell off the lake - but no joy! This allowed Keith Jamieson to overtake the pair and start chasing leading F15 Paul Burnell. Although, Paul kept increasing his lead on the way to the end of the lake, Ian and Mike nibbled away at his lead on the way back - was the pressure so much that he opened up the lead by missing a mark? No Paul had just not written the course down properly - you'd think he'd have learnt after making a similar mistake in the morning race!
The winds favoured the other fleets on the return trip, and brought the whole fleet closer together. After the final results were calculated, Val and Ken Bell were declared winners of the race from Margaret Trotter and Mike Chappell.

The weather certainly couldn't make its mind up this weekend. Sunshine and showers is part of the story, with the wind playing games for the competitors throughout the weekend, it made OD Neil Currie a nervous wreck!
Following a barbeque, a late night on the dance floor (or pool table), with a bit of Stella as sustenance, left some sailors jaded for Sunday's racing. But the competition remained strong. At lunchtime on Sunday, after three races, there was all to play for in the final two races as David Lawson, Phil Smith, and Neil Platt were all on equal points.
David Lawson secured race 4, but this still left the other two in with a chance on the final race. Just after the start of race 5, the OD had his head in his hands as John Telford put up his spinnaker on the first beat to 7. Having managed to lead three others astray, Telf was able to watch the rest of the fleet for the way to go as he drifted in the shadow of Skiddaw. However, the Hodgkins boys heading for the shadow of Sale Fell, also put their spinnaker up and secured an excellent lead. Mum Jose couldn't stand the tension and went for a shower to put on her glad rags for the prizegiving. When she came out, the boys had suffered the fate of many over the weekend, having been stuck in a hole while some of the fleet caught up and passed them by. From this point, David and Phil battled for first and second place through to the end, with David securing another first, and a commanding win of the open meeting.
Commodore Jose Hodgkins awarded the prizes, and leading visitor Neil Platt thanked the club for putting on another excellent event (despite the weather!)

Blue skies, and light - medium airs made for an excellent weekend's sailing. Those that were away on holiday, would struggle to match the glorious weather.
Emily Carruthers tried her hand at crewing for her dad in his F15 and secured a first place. The winds weren't so kind in the next race, but who cares, she enjoyed it!
The Hodgkins boys had a good battle with Hugh Godfrey and Rhonwen Bryce, and came out on top securing second place overall.
There was some close racing throughout the weekend with both the F15 and Mirror series being determined on the last race. Final results for the weekend, together with a championship update follow.

The GP14 Masters got off to a brilliant
start on Saturday (apart from two general recalls!) with
good winds, courses and excellent racing. Bridget got her nibbles out again on Friday, and then it was Elaine's turn on Saturday (in celebration of Mike's forthcoming retirement). Click on the marquee to find out what went on inside!! Apologies for the occasional fussy picture! |

After a late night for some, and having
tried their best to drink the bar dry, they started
Sunday with a bacon buttie and waited for the wind to
come in. By 11.30 OD Phil Smith had everyone on the line
and got them off to a clean start. Unfortunately the wind
had shifted and the first beat was somewhat one sided and
this led to some different faces at the front of the
fleet. A nifty bit of mark shifting reinstated one beat,
but the new leaders held their own for the rest of the
race. Graham Flynn's 4th in this penultimate race was sufficient to secure the series. |
||
The last race had a couple of shaky
starts before the black flag started to hit home. The
battle for 2nd overall took place between Neil Platt and
Richard Instone. Although Neil was close on Richard's
tail, Richard was able to take advantage of one lift that
split up the pair for the rest of the race, thereby
securing 2nd place. As for the final results? - Click here. Commodore Jose Hodgkins thanked all that had helped make the weekend such a great success - especially Andy Smith for all his hard work. Secretary Joan Cowan presented the prizes. Graham Flynn and GP14 President Toby Taylor expressed their thanks to the club for running such a successful event (and beating the weather forecast!) |

and a word from a happy sailor which makes all the effort worthwhile......... Thanks for a superb weekend,
apart from the multiple restarts in the last race, for
which we only have ourselves to blame, it was great, lots
of good memories and not to many aches and pains. Well
done on the web site, and generally all the hardwork that
has gone in throughout the weekend. |
The sun shone and many visitors had an excellent weekend's racing with a fantastic backdrop of Skiddaw. Some even had the energy to dance the night away at the disco. The racing was close enough such that the handicap and mirror results were both dependent on whatever happened in the last race.
At the prizegiving, Bridget thanked all who had helped throughout the weekend from OD, through rescue, to catering and bar.

Well that's what David Heal and Blackburn were doing during the Jimmy Lancaster Memorial Race on Sunday afternoon. David was pleased to be trying out the spinnaker in his Osprey, but mark 4 got the better of the pair each time and they continued to perfect their capsize drill. At the front of the fleet, visitor Neil Platt with Phil Smith in a F15 were continuing to increase their lead, though there was one boat that closed the gap - Neil Garrison in his Dart.
Paul Burnell had to do turns after a luffing incident with William Carruthers and Toggle Cowan, but was somewhat cheered up when William practised dredging with spinnaker!
At the end of the somewhat wet race, after the handicaps were adjusted, Neil Platt was first boat but, being a visitor, was not entitled to take the trophy which went to Mike Moore and Ian Smith.

On Saturday, the hot sunny weather with a good southerly breeze to boot was looking extremely promising. The OD, who vowed to start on time, had to delay matters when the effects of a sea breeze started to put his plans for a course, taking the fleet around the lake, to pot. After this delay in setting a course to suit the new wind, the fleet were so eager to get down to it that there was a general recall. Fortunately, they behaved themselves after that and got off to a clean start second time around.
However, the winds had not settled down; with continual wind changes and the odd hole to contend with positions were regularly changing. Steve Goacher and Neil Platt enjoyed some good racing, but it was Neil that went on to win the first race.
The second race was held in more constant airs, and there were several battles going on throughout the race. Neil Platt again secured the lead and went on to win.
Saturday evening started with lasagne and chianti, and as the Stella started to flow a pool competition got underway. It's anyone's guess as to who (should have) won, but after several more Stellas very few people cared! Did this affect concentration levels for Sunday's racing...?
Sunday threatened to be a bit of a drifter, but just before the scheduled 10.30 start the wind started to fill in from the South and the racing was under way just 15 minutes late. The lead was again a battle between Steve Goacher and Neil Platt with Steve taking command of the situation, but Neil stole his chance on the final mark rounding to take the third race and secure the series. This didn't stop the two taking to the water for the final race. The wind had faded over lunchtime and it was hoped that a sea breeze would take over. However, although the wind filled in from the West with the sea breeze, northerly gusts of wind gave the starboard side of the beat the advantage. Steve Goacher was quick to notice this and soon had a commanding lead. The northerly gusts played their part in reducing Steve's lead on the next beat, but he stayed ahead and didn't make the same mistake again and he went on to win the final race.
Other prizes for the weekend went to that silvery haired Neil Currie with Toggle Cowan for their 'outstanding' performance in the Neil's former F15 in the silver fleet. The Classic boat prize went to Keith Jamieson.

The GP14s were at Derwent Reservoir this weekend in the North West Area Championships. Again, we had some excellent results with Bean and Toggle securing 2nd overall, Telf and Smithster 4th, and Neil Currie with Scumper 8th.
At the club, there were two series of fleet handicap racing. The Tinker Trophy, held over Saturday and Sunday, proved to be close to the finish as the overall result depended on the last race. Returning member Simon Davis in his RS200 was kept on his toes by Mike Moore in his F15, but Simon took the last race and the series.
Monday's racing was held in gusty conditions interspersed with the odd wind shadow. The first race was very close with the first seven boats finishing within 40 seconds on corrected time. In the afternoon, Mike Moore with Ian Smith broke away from the rest of the fleet at the start of the 2nd beat by staying out of the dreaded wind shadow for a vital few seconds. and they continued to build on this for the rest of the race. With the race being calculated on average lap times, Mike was concerned when the other fleets' course was shortened before the F15s as the wind had eased and the pace had slowed. Miles and Joe were elated at keeping William and Alan at bay - is that enough encouragement for them to try their hand in next week's F15 open meeting?
When the results were calculated, Mike had another 1st and took the Paul Carruthers Memorial Trophy.

The weather forecast again put many off venturing out for a sail. However, those that did had many thrills and spills. With Rich and Philip Hodgkins running rings around their parents in Saturday's racing, Bridget had had enough and buried her head in some marking on Sunday. Just as well, as Ginge seemed to be full of the joys of spring and was washing his boat out (in the middle of the race?!) with the odd capsize or two - definitely resulting in some wet knickers. He wasn't the only one though, the gusty conditions meant that most of the dinghies were practising their capsize drills.
Stand in OD Stephen Kirkpatrick was taking things rather gingerly - was it because of the demon drink, or was it due to overstretching the odd muscle or two following some high kicks while being a Can-Can girl? We may never know! This allowed father in law Keith Thomas to venture back into a Flying 15 with William for the first time in two years. They had some close racing with Mike Moore and Ian Smith, but Mike decided to cover for all the race apart from one tack (big mistake) and William broke through but was unable to lay the mark after lee-bowing Mike and had to gybe around while Mike took the lead again. On the final beat William's spinnaker pole had come adrift which was inhibiting tacking so went for the one tack Sampson tactic. Mike's downfall came when his genny halyard snapped with 500 yds to go. William seized the moment to take the race and Mike limped home in second place.
The afternoon pennant race was held in blustery conditions, with all boats mooning in some form or other (even William and Keith in their F15!). The beats were hard work, but the offwind legs made up for it with some excellent planing conditions.

Now that the Bank Holiday is over, the skies are clear and the sun is shining; the strong winds, and rain almost seem a distant memory. All we have to remind us is the link bridge to the pontoon is horizontal (the lake level having risen by a foot over the weekend alone), the camping field is flooded, several bruises and plenty of aching muscles.
With high winds on and off throughout the weekend, the rescue crews were kept very busy - snapped shrouds, broken rudders, masts in mud, and bruised egos. That was the pain - the gain was some excellent racing with some brilliant two and three sail reaches, and some very scary runs - Steve Hunt will warrant that - when he saw Ian Campbell (in a F15) and Hugh Godfrey flattened, he decided to join them (well that's how he put it).
Several GPs travelled away for the Inland Championships - Telf and Smithster were the shining the torch for Bass and finished a creditable 4th - Well done.
Other club member results
10th (and 1st in Silver fleet) - Robin Dawson and Mark Somerville
11th - Bean and Toggle Cowan
36th - Richard and birthday boy Philip Hodgkins
Quotes of the weekend
I got my leg over three times in that race (Nigel
Lewis's crew) - Divorce on the cards when his wife finds out?
You were lucky I didn't stick it up your backside (Mike
Moore to Nigel Lewis) - Mike seemed so disappointed
No, I did not have a wee in the shower (Tim to son
Richard) - Well who do you believe?
I've had a colonic irrigation on that reach from 1 to 4, and
it was free! (Scott Beattie after crewing in the last race)
I hope that was more forceful than last week (Rhonwen
after ensuring Mike did some turns on the start) - I promise not
to mess with her
and as for the weekend series results (if anyone really cares)

With a strong contingent from the GP14 fleet taking on the challenge on the vageries of Windermere, club racing comprised a four race all fleet challenge series whereby finishing times are adjusted on a fleet handicap basis.
Sunday morning racing proved
interesting for the spectators at least! Rich Hodgkins took new
member David Heal out for a swim sail, but
seemed to spend a lot of time demonstrating how shallow the lake
is, the effect on burgees of getting a mast stuck in the mud, and
how hard it is to get a capsized boat upright once the mast is in
the mud! The OD took pity on the pair and shortened the race
after one such capsize. Meanwhile, following a prestart capsize,
the Blackburns in a lark had an early return to the club showers.
Those at the front of the fleet were not with their mishaps either. Leading laser Ian Macpherson took the leading boats the wrong way around the leeward mark. Hugh and Rhonwen were the first to realise the mistake (Rhonwen said she knew all along, but Hugh said she wasn't forceful enough - Sorry Hugh, can't believe that of Rhonwen!!) but, after unwinding their mistake, Hugh hardened up for the beat, forgot to use his toestraps, performed an excellent back flip, then capsized, allowing Ginge and Phil Hodgkins to take the lead with Ian Macpherson chasing.
Sailors were less enthusiastic for the final race, with only three potential starters, the start was delayed while Rich again demonstrated that it is possible to right boats even when their masts get stuck in the mud (or could it be the timing went a bit awry?). Anyway, the boats got away to a clear start, and on the first tack Rich and David went for a further swim! Ian took the lead and held Ginge off for the rest of the race which was enough to win the series.

Word is that Telf and Smithster were set to win
the Windermere open with Bean and Toggle third. But it wasn't to
be!
Telf - 2nd
Bean - 4th
Robin Dawson - 5th.
As everyone looked forward to a continuance of the barmy spring weather over the Easter break, they were in for a bit of a shock. The airs cooled on Friday, increased on Saturday, eased a little on Sunday, and brought in rain on Monday!
White horses ruled the waves on Sunday morning to such an extent that seven keen sailors would only go out in club boats (viz Toppers), the GP element enjoyed it so much that they did the same again on Sunday afternoon!
Despite Sunday's miserable start, there was a good turnout across the fleets to compete for the weekend series.
Bridget's Diary:
Sunday - What a breeze! All I could see was white water coming in
from the direction of Siberia. But the GP lads decided to test
their skills in Toppers, and William went too (in his shorts!?)-
If only he'd left his camera out 'cos when he came ashore (after
being for a little swim) his legs were glowing. This didn't stop
him dragging me out screaming in the afternoon for my first sail
in a Flying 15. And the screaming didn't stop there! - I
reassured him that all the words I was using were in the French
dictionary. Also, I told him that I'd prefer to go on Megaphobia
blindfold rather than sail with him again. Even so, it was great
fun.

While the GP fleet went away en masse to the Scottish Area Championships at Annandale, it left a select few at the club to compete for the Celebrity Glass Trophy. Another glorious weekend, but the lake was mirror like at times on Saturday, while on Sunday the brisk southerly was too much to tempt anyone out to race.
The final results were based on Saturday's racing

In preparation for the Worlds later this year, the GP sailors in the club were seen taking to the water on Saturday 29th of March. The reason for this early start to the season? - Richard Estaugh visited the club to share with us some of his tuning tips and race tactics.
Richard picked a boat at random and proceeded to tell us all how to rig it properly. He told us about tensions and distances and angles and twists. We looked at the boat from the port side, the starboard side, the stern and the bow.
Unfortunately he then told us the fifteen things which the crew must do when rounding the windward mark. Half the audience sighed with the resignation that no matter what they do when they round the mark, it will never be right.
Then, with Richard's help, we all rigged our own boats to perfection. Can't blame the boat any more!
In the afternoon we took to the water for a number of one lap 'sausage' courses. Each race had a '3, 2, 1, go' countdown after which Richard followed in the rescue boat shouting tips to us. 'Too much kicker,' (crew's fault), 'jib in a bit more,' (crew's fault) or my particular favourite 'play the main a bit more!' At last! It's official! It's not always the crew's fault! Richard said so.
The general recall came when the wind lifted by about 20 degrees seven seconds before the start. Yes folks, you are sailing on Bass. Five boats full of enthusiastic sailors all headed for the best start they could only to discover it was the worst!
To round off the day, Richard gave some tips on gate starts. The general consensus was get two thirds of the way down what you think the line will be but no doubt the line will be different because the wind will change.
For those who did not make it, the main themes were: pay attention to detail - it's that last half inch that makes all the difference; keep your head up when you go round a mark - don't just follow everyone else; and remember helms, play that main up the windward leg! Everyone had a great time, learnt a lot and look out Abersoch - here comes the Bass squad!

Start of the seasonGlorious weather continued
for an excellent start to the season's |
and that diary.. Sunday 29th
March Anything that could go wrong seemed to - no beat for the first race, no recall flag either (well it would have been a perfect start a second earlier!), managed to loose one of the halyards up the mast, almost got one flag stuck up the mast, third time lucky when it came to lassooing Mark A; having started the first race half an hour late, tried to make up time by starting the 2nd race at 2pm (half an hour too early) but Phil wasn't going to let me get away with that. Anyway, next week I'll be out there with them - hopefully it'll be just as sunny and I won't get my gnatsy gants wet! |

The last race of the 2002 season determined the first trophy winner for next year's annual dinner! There seemed to be some dissent about the race management, but the OD (demob happy Miles) wasn't in a mood to care too much!
