The first social of the year comprised a walk around the Wythop area for over 20 members. Despite a poor forecast, the weather was a little mizzly at times, and slightly muddy underfoot for a short while, but everyone made it to the end and returned to the club for some of Kayla's homemade soup.
The next event is the Leap Year Quiz on 23 February with a tatie pot supper. Miss it miss out!
The recent rain has lifted the lake level again. Well at least the camping field is getting a good watering! The top panorama is a view that we should be rightly proud of. How many other club's benefit from such views?
As the end of the year approaches, the last party of the season, and probably most well attended(!) took place in the clubhouse last weekend - The Christmas Party! - there was a buffet, plenty of games, some dancing and then someone noticed Santa! He had to leave his sleigh across the lake but hitched a lift from the club dory and some not so little helpers!
He led the singing of some Christmas carols, handed out presents to all the children and then went on his merry way (merry being the operative word after yet another glass of sherry!)
Find out what you may not have known about long standing club member Ian Macpherson from a recent local newspaper article WHATEVER FLOATS HIS BOAT
Have we had some members mis-behaving? Is it to do with getting out those Christmas baubles and keeping them out of reach of the family pet?
No, it's related to another addition to the Preston / Kirkpatrick family! 'Barley Wine' has been carefully looked after by hanging high in a tree to dry out whilst waiting for a new owner to give it love & attention. Trustee Graham Kirkpatrick's favourite son-in-law, Ian, has long had a vision of him making a come back to the world of 15's. There is now a serious risk that Graham could be seen on Bass, and on the Classic FF circuit, with Ian next year! 'Barley Wine' is now at the Preston's rest home for old boats. Two old codgers in an old boat! Competing again against Alan & Keith. The mind boggles!
Oh yes, it had to happen. Another birthday
for Kayla. I know you should never reveal a lady's age, so I'll make an
exception this time and won't! However, the clue might be in her email
address kayla1967. So many congratulations, on this special day - We hope she finds enough puff to blow out all 40 candles (oops). She is of course holding a birthday party on Sunday afternoon, to which all children are invited to come and play games and see Santa who is making a special visit to club. Don't forget to bring some snacks for the bring and eat buffet. The fun starts at 3pm

Just as well the sailing
season's over. As you can see from the webcam, the weather has not been
too inviting. There's snow on the top of Skiddaw, and the few boats left
by the lake are at risk of floating away if the lake continues to rise! Oh to be tucked away next to a log fire. Not very good for the carbon emissions, but on a day like today - who cares! :) |
At this year's AGM Steve Hunt was re-elected Commodore for his second year in office. For the full list of council members click here. It will be noted that we still need someone to be responsible for the running of the bar. If you're interested please contact the Commodore.
Some proposals by the Hon Sailing Secretary generated much discussion. Firstly, a proposal to adopt the usual 5-4-1-0 start sequence for club racing was rejected by those present. When Roy advised that it was proposed to move the committee boat to the starboard end of the line, there was much concern raised from the floor, but in the end it was agreed to trial it for 10 weeks in the new season. Finally, consideration has been given to revise the scoring system for the championship, as the present system of giving points relative to the number of starters in the series seemed to give a significant advantage to those doing well in long series. Three options were put forward - status quo, increase the points in weekend series by the number of starters in that series, and thirdly revert to the low points scoring system. When voted on by members the scoring was very close 8-9-7 (or thereabouts!), so for next season the championship scoring will be revised for weekend series to increase the number of points by the number of starters in that series.
The treasurer's proposal to raise subscriptions in line with inflation, again raised interesting discussion, driven by those stalwarts - our Hon Auditor(!), and Ian MacPherson. When finally voted on the following subscriptions were approved for the new season
Ordinary £143
Family £65
Junior £30
Country £69
Life £57
Affiliated £58
Senior £100
The training report was given by Nigel Lewis, and advised members of the success of the current regime. Members were reminded to register their interest for training prior to the new season to ensure a place would be available.
Under any other business, members were advised of issues regarding the number of non-sailing visitors entering the grounds. Whilst not wishing to discourage genuine visitors it was felt appropriate to for council to consider some for of gate management system.
The Commodore outlined recent discussions with neighbouring residents and their concerns over some of our operations. Discussions are ongoing to address the issues amicably where considered appropriate.
Finally, the Hon Auditor raised concerns about a missing wheel from his road trailer. All was well when it was reported that it had just been borrowed, albeit without asking!
The meeting closed at approx 1630hrs
Unfortunately, today was boatman Josh's last day at the club before he goes and gets a proper job with the big boys! He's been with us a couple of years, and he'll be missed by one and all.
The winds were somewhat more moderate for the final race of the season. There were 10 takers, although the competition was only between the Commodore and Barry Lancaster. Steve and Ruth had to get 4th or better to beat Barry, but the handicap system jumbled up all the names, and spit out the winners in a random like order!
With Steve getting a 7th, Barry's 4th was sufficient for him to win the Winter Trophy and be first on the prize list for next year's prize giving! Following racing, the remaining marks were taken off the water and the rescue boats packed away for the winter maintenance.
It's worth taking your boat off site or moving it to higher ground as we regularly get floods at this time of year

Yes Toggle has reached one of those key milestones in life. Three score year and ten I hear you ask - No. The first half century - surprisingly no! It had to be the big 40 - many congratulations. At that age can he stand the pace of Nick Smith's wild stag party? Only time will tell.
Well by Tog's account at least - yes he rose to the challenge and survived all the stag parties to the end. Not sure whether that means he was last one standing!
Yes, it's November. Sunday only racing on a personal handicap basis. For the first weekend, Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley mastered the light winds, and despite having their handicap amended for the 2nd race (well doctored!), they secured two wins from Wendy Lewis in her RS200.
The November series continued last Sunday. As a result of being on a personal handicap basis it tends to be a bit of a lottery as to what the results will be! The day started with light winds which seemed as if they were freshening. The odd gust passed through, but not very often. The morning race was led by William and Lesley, but the handicap system resulted in it being won by Barry Lancaster with Martin Wright crewing.
The wind was lighter for the second race, and most of the fleet were finished after one lap, but the RS400 and RS200 had to completed two laps. With the wind filling in slightly, their average lap time improved and the race was won by Joan and Jack Hardie.
It may have been cold in and on the water, but William continued to sail in a shortie. Some traditions die hard

The final championship series of the year is being sailed this year. At a thank you dinner for Council members there was an opportunity for some dirty tactics between the key helms in the Mirror fleet to try and make sure their opponents were unfit for sailing. Only time will tell whether the tactics were implemented or worked!
Bridget managed to embarrass a waitress with a spoonerism of sticky toffee (pudding)!
I'm aware that some of you have been following the race on the website and have even contributed.
I thought it worth putting down how I feel and sharing it while it's fresh. So thanks for your interest and support. Toni forwarded them via e mail .
We sailed an Ocean; no we raced an Ocean - big difference. 4,800 miles in 31 days. We came 2nd in race 1 and 4th in race 2. Are we happy with that? No we had great ambitions in La Rochelle to win the leg. However, a disastrous trip through the Canaries found the biggest hole in the Atlantic Ocean and we emerged 10th, with a record low run for 24 hrs of 9 miles. So to climb back to 4th felt good, particularly as we beat Hull & Humber (Dumb & Dumber to us !) We emerged relatively intact with only our mid range spinnaker damaged (damaged when we crash gybed and broke the preventer - a section 5 m X 2m went missing!).I hasten to add that this was the other watch - it was 2.30 am and I was asleep at the time. Other yachts had a RNLI evacuation at Lands End by the Falmouth lifeboat - it was too rough for the sea King, one dislocated shoulder, one leg caught up in a spinnaker sheet with rope burns that turned bad and series of stitches and bruises. As well as 6 blown out kites in the fleet , two spinnaker poles have been broken in broaches or gybes and a jockey pole bent.
So have I enjoyed it? Far too small a word for the totality of the experience. It has been a test, physically, mentally & socially. No one who has not encountered the foredeck of a large yacht during a racing sail change can understand the sheer physical brutality of it. In the dark, with the boat pitching, trying so hard to keep one hand for the boat and one for the job, it makes me feel every day of my age! Mentally racing the boat is relentless. 24 hrs a day trimming sails, changing sails and 3hr watches in the night & 4 hrs in the day test ones endurance and patience. Sometimes we were sailing best course downwind for days and life becomes repetitive.
I have to say the scenery gets a bit samey ( I spy with my little eye something beginning with S) However, the biggest test has been socially. God knows I'm not a difficult man to get along with ( I can hear the chorus , thank you !) Remember the boat was called Liverpool and was crewed by a significant number of scousers. It felt a lot like big brother at times and Toni will attest to the fact that I demanded daily emails from her and the boys to bring something into my claustrophobic world. But don't get the impression it was bad - I feel I've been tested and passed, The highs have been extraordinary. Being at the top of an 85 ft mast while we're sailing, uncrossing halyards and checking for chafe: helming downwind with a following sea - surfing at nearly 20 knots: being the no 1 upwind helmsman, being on for the first spell of the watch to set the standards of course, average and top speed: dolphins torpedoing down to the boat in phosphorescent trails: being hit by flying fish : the feeling of a supportive watch - all these and more are memorable. But for me it's back to cruising. Roller reefing sails, lazy jacks and autopilots will be even more appreciated. When we parked for 48 hrs in the Canaries the skipper asked me ¨"Well Pete - from your experience what would you do to make this boat go faster" I answered without hesitation " I'd switch the f*****g engine on ! "There are not enough restaurants in an ocean to make me do it again, however, as Robin Knox Johnson said in his address before the start " for the rest of your life what will separate you from the average man is that you have sailed an Ocean" I'll stick with that-it's an achievement and I'm proud I've done it. You just may hear me talk about it every now and then and as I said at the beginning - thanks for your support - it's meant a lot.
Pete
For various reasons there has been a disappointing turnout for this year's team racing. With three boats from Derwent that expected to race as a team, they were split up and teamed randomly with one of the other competitors.
On Saturday, Robin Dawson sailed with Ian Preston and led the way for a while, but Tony Lee got into his stride and won both races. The winds were light to medium from the SSW so the OD tried to set courses avoiding the inevitable shadow in the lee of Sale Fell.
The Flying 15s had one extra player on Sunday - Neil Platt. The winds were again from the South West and swinging around Sale Fell but slightly fresher than Saturday.
The racing was again close, but in the end it was the B team comprising Tony Lee and Robin Dawson that sailed consistently to win the Viking Trophy (if only we knew where it is!). Not surprisingly Derwent featured in the prizes - one of the benefits of having a Derwent boat in each team!! Tony Lee gave a vote of thanks to the club for hosting the event.

The October series, sailed on a personal handicap basis, started on Saturday with a fleet of 10 boats. No real excitement to report, but the ever changing handicaps make it difficult to predict the results (other than someone will have a whinge)!
On Sunday. Neil Garrison managed to secure a strong lead in the first race, and so sailed 4 laps to the rest of the fleets 3. Martin Wright won on handicap.
Nigel Lewis was keen to get the second race underway, but somehow managed to be 3 minutes late, and narrowly missed ramming the Bates on mid transom. His racing ended shortly afterwards following a capsize drill (or so he may have us believe). Joan Hardie sailed a good race and stayed in the lead, but the personal handicapping system dropped her back a place behind Val Bell.
Joe Watkins had a good weekends sailing and is presently 2nd overall behind John Halliday who seemed somewhat confused most of the weekend due to the variable approach to the starting sequence which had been implemented to accommodate the F15s.

Just received these photos of a long term project by Trustee Graham Kirkpatrick that was finally completed earlier this year. Obviously still drawn by the Flying 15s which he sailed for many years, he can be seen crossing the part of the fleet at the FF Nationals at Largs! Could there be a push to launch it at Bass?!
Plenty of sun, glorious views of the lake, somewhat obscured bye a wandering spider (on the webcam), but no wind was what greeted sailors on Saturday.
Ah well, you can't have everything!
Surprisingly the a light breeze did fill in across the lake very quickly, and racing got underway only slightly late (though Scumper was later than most!). The wind eased towards the end of the first race to slow proceedings down, so some boats went ashore for a comfort break. However, the OD took no prisoners and started the sequence as soon as all the boats had finished, leaving Shunty and William several minutes late for the start. Fortunately the breeze did hold for the rest of the race.
The first race, which should have been a pursuit, was canned due to it not complying with the series rules

Sunday's misty start lingered all day, and although there was some ripples on the water for a while, there was never enough to get racing started. There was more movement by the spider clambering over the webcam!
Cancelling the racing meant that series positions in the final long series of the season would stand as previously, with only one weekend series left count towards the championship.

and don't get caught if you do, which is what happened to Andy T. Having just bought a Laser Vago the instructions were out to determine how to rig it. Stephen Kirkpatrick and T took it out for their 1st sail, and suffered their first capsize having caught their downhaul on the bowsprit.
Another casualty was Neil Garrison who capsized the Dart - not sure why because there wasn't much wind!
The series comprised six races over the weekend based on personal handicap.
Shunty and Ruth seemed to be in a bit of a spin all day on Saturday - hitting the windward mark in one race resulted in them having to do a penalty turn, and in the next race an incident with Roy led to him doing another couple of turns. It didn't stop him from making a comeback and winning the race from William and Elaine on the water at least!
The light winds eased as the afternoon went on, and many seemed to be noticing the cold - what a difference from last Saturday. A beautiful evening with mirror like conditions followed.
Shunty's grappling iron impressively located and retrieved the missing anchor on the second sweep. Phew! (Don't think Ruth was looking forward to spending more time on the water with the temperatures dropping!)
As for Sunday, well you can't have everything, especially not sun and wind. As with Saturday, the breeze was generally light, and sufficient to keep the boats moving, but during the 2nd race the wind started to swing from the north leaving the fleet struggling to reach the finish line wherever that was going to be! The OD thought he would be kind and finish Big E at the top of the beat, but as he was a lap behind that wasn't possible without Big E sailing another lap. This led to confusion and frustration with Shunty and Ruth who thought they had only a few hundred yards to sail until the committee boat left its station, so he opted for a tow ashore. Similarly, Robbie D and Ethan decided to retire. However, the committee boat returned to its station and finished the rest of the boats drifting around the course before they too opted to retire.
With things not looking too promising there were only three takers for the final race, but by the time they finished the lake was mirror like yet again

Here's a snap taken the day before the start of the
Clipper race on 'Liverpool 08'. Sadly (for Pete) Dame Ellen Macarthur is not part
of the crew!
The 10 yachts are currently heading away from the coast of Portugal to bypass Madeira. The weather in Biscay and off Finistere has been "brutal and relentless" (bit like Bass then!). 'Liverpool' crew are busy trying to mend the 2.5 kite which was cut to ribbons in a crash gybe at 2.30 am Wednesday (NOT on Pete's watch!) They are therefore short-handed, especially as they had to donate a crew member to 'Jamaica', so could have done with Ellen on board. I'm glad it is not me out there but they seem to be staying cheerful. Toni |
Saturday - What a glorious day for sailing - T-shirt, shorts and sun cream (well for William at least), though there seemed to be a multitude of capsizes including the Commodore.
With the wind coming in a SSW direction over Sale Fell, the shifts were challenging as the down draughts hit the water. In the mirrors, Mik may have secured two wins, but the OD said there was only a coat of paint between them when they finished the 2nd race. Scumper didn't have good day - First race spent pulling Zefer's car off precipice; in rush for 2nd race realised that kite not rigged and ended up late for start. Roy wished he'd carried out his planned maintenance because the toe straps that he's had since before Bass Week now need fitted! Robbie D, with Ginger Phil crewing, was in overnight lead for the handicap series from William and Lesley, each having a 1st & 2nd to count
The OD complained that there were no instructions on how to lay an anchor! Oh how Herb is missed on his days off!
Many had been forecasting force 8 gales for Sunday - but remember Bass has its own micro climate, and though windy it was sailable. With the wind coming over Sale Fell again, the OD took pity on the sailors and thought he'd let them have a breather as they drifted in its shadow working their way from 0 to 8!
Kayla was back on the water after many months recuperating from a back injury. But jumping into a F15 with Mike was challenging for her - spinnaker poles, finding sheets, gybing poles all left her somewhat confussled!
A spectacular reach by William and Ruth before the start almost ended in disaster when they had to avoid Mike Moore (Mike effect #1), but luffing up led to an equally spectacular high speed capsize and the loss of another burgee!
The afternoon course was set in the wind! Hard beats but some excellent runs/reaches down (5mins up, 3mins down). On the startline it seemed as if there'd been a massacre (well small one!) with Toggle and Big E capsizing on the start signal. For some reason Big E thought Robbie D (with Sam Hall) was to blame. Toggle had caught his pole on Mike's horse (Mike effect #2). Scumper and Zefer took the lead and kept on going, William and Ruth struggled to shake off Robbie and Mike, but did eventually get some good offwind legs in to pull away somewhat. Following one gybe trying to avoid giving Mike water at a mark, Robbie went for a spectacular capsize (Mike effect #3 - hatrick!!!) marginally less impressive than William's (according to Mike). Despite going turtle, Robbie recovered, sailed on and finished 3rd on handicap. This made no difference to his overall position of 1st having won the series with 2 1sts and a 2nd.

Although of naturally modest and unassuming nature - I feel that the widest possible circulation is necessary to draw attention to the above result. With a northerly gale behind us we wizzed down the Irish sea - one other boat Jamaica had a casualty taken off by helicopter following an accidental gybe - the picked our way past Ushant and down the French coast. Then we lost the wind completely. Race committee shortened to 1am Thursday when we radioed in our position. It's very stressful sailing in very little wind when you can see the yacht behind you So I now have a pennant - presented to all the Liverpool crew by the Mayor which I confidently expect to be displayed in a prominent position in the Bass clubhouse. The Tinker Association are held another of their rallies at the Club this weekend. For Saturday, following a mirror-like lake at dawn, the wind filled in significantly in time for racing forcing sailors to contend with some blustery conditions at times. There were few contenders for club racing which was run alongside the tinkers' racing in the form of a weekend series for none other than the Tinker Trophy.
The Hallidays set off for the race, but a capsize before the start made them think twice about continuing and they were ashore before racing started. In fact the start was delayed because the OD donated the Bates anchor, and warp, to Neptune as neither he, nor official starter for the day, realised that the anchor was not actually tied to the boat!
The 2nd race was delayed while a wedding party had their photos taken by the shore. Well not really, but the sailors had plenty of time to watch while the OD carefully planned the course, only for the wind to shift again - the best laid plans...
All the single handers (including the dart!) had their turn at capsizing, particularly at the gybe mark, but William and Lesley coped with the conditions and went on to win the race. There were occasions when they had to bear away from the reach on the leeward shore by as much as 60 degrees, and the shoreline seemed to approach somewhat too quickly. Common sense prevailed and the gennaker was taken down so that the boat could at least lay the leeward mark.
The Saturday night high winds failed to die down as the pressure kept dropping. The Tinkers opted to have an early finish and packed up without trying for any more races. The few club sailors that turned up waited a while to see if the winds eased as per the forecast. However, it is questionable as to whether the forecast can be believed as, at one stage, it stated that the wind at Keswick was just 10mph - As if! The recorded windspeed from the club equipment showed 37mph. While waiting for the wind to ease, Shunty and Tim went fishing for the missing anchor and warp (see later), but to no avail

Follow the recent training weekend the following people attained RYA 1 or 2 certificates William Coulthard, Jonathan Coulthard, Terry Beckham, Nick Orton, Joni Beckham, Marion Beckham and Malcom Tully. Also in the picture is Malcolm Houldsworth, instructor for the level 2 group.
More congratulations to Sam Hall for attaining 2nd U14 at Redesmere in the NW Junior Travellers series on Saturday. He went on get a 3rd at South Windermere on Sunday. Well done.
This weekend Bass held the FF Northerns. On Saturday the weather was fantastic although the winds very light and challenging. A strong fleet of 31 boats took to the water and it was Steve Goacher that again mastered the light airs to reign as overnight leader with two bullets.
The eagle eyed amongst you will note that one boat, being sailed by brothers Alan and Eric Smith from Bass, had sail no 1. What you may not realise is that it is actually FF #1. It has been restored by the brothers and relaunched especially for the event. For the maiden voyage, it was sailed in its original state complete with wooden mast, boom and red cotton storm sails (not ideal for the light wind conditions!).
Sunday's conditions started off like a mirror, but the wind filled in for a slightly belated start just after 11am. Steve Goacher was a premature starter and had to fight his way back from 12th position at the windward mark, finally reaching 4th. Adrian Tattersall won the race but as his next best result was a 5th, it meant Steve couldn't be beaten and he was able to sit out the last race. Dave Brockbank with a 2nd, 4th and 6th came 2nd. Bass helm Scott Beattie, with John Somerville, found their form for the second day with a 1st and 2nd to secure 3rd overall.

With no club racing, three RSs took the opportunity to sail at Ullswater's one day open meeting with RS200 and RS400 fleets. Five races were sailed, with four to count, in very unsettled airs that ranged from sitting out (briefly) to flat calm. Out of the 33 RS200s Robin and Ethan Dawson sailed well to secure 2nd overall. Of the 7 RS400s, it tended to be difficult for helms to actually work out what position they had achieved until the results were published. Some consistent positions by William and Ruth gave them 12pts and 3rd overall. Scumper and Zefer had 13 pts and finished 4th overall. Oh to be back at Bass for some steady winds!? |
After another drizzly start, the day brightened and the breeze picked up somewhat before racing got underway such that Roy, and Toggle, went for early swims (or so I thought - apparently Toggle was undertaking some running repairs). The blustery conditions continued after the start to the extent that William took the cautious route (having beaten the fleet to the windward mark!) and took Elaine ashore. Roy and Kirstie retired soon afterwards. There were a couple of near misses at the windward mark as Hugh and Rhonwen started to realise that F15s will not bear away as readily as GPs (especially when they're healing over!) but William and Shunty, though distracted by the incidents (and Rhonwen screaming tack), escaped unscathed.
Though in the lead, Shunty and Ruth put in an enthusiastic gybe and went for a brief swim dropping him back to 3rd on handicap. 1st place honours went to Dave Lawson, with Sam Hall 2nd
The afternoon race was for a pennant in aid of the Jubilee Sailing Trust, and in the usual tradition the course took the fleet around the lake. After the blustery breeze in the morning, racing was a lot more tame. William had mistimed the start by a mere 3 mins but realised just in time to not throw the race away because anything can happen in a round the laker (and it usually does!). The NW breeze allowed the fleet to run/reach (in the occasional gusts) all the way down to 12. Shunty had broken away but was becalmed for a while and the bank of boats crept ever closer. He tried to call rank on William and Elaine as they reached past his transom with that uncommon sailing term 'Do you know who I am?'. No worries though because William gybed into the lake and found a hole of his very own allowing Shunty and Mike Moore to break away. Although it took the fleet 50 mins to get down the lake, all classes were so close together at 12 it was as if they had only recently started. With Shunty and Mike heading back up the lake on the eastern shore, William initially opted to stay left. Unfortunately every time he tried to cross over the winds were against him so he just HAD to continue up the A66, getting lifted all the way. In the meantime, Shunty and Mike again wallowed in a calm patch while William held the breeze. By 7, William was ahead of Shunty, but the breeze had filled in for Shunty so it became a race to the finish. To Shunty's dismay wife Elaine was to beat him (again!) after the 30 min beat back. William reckoned that the only thing that could have topped beating Steve would have been doing the same to Neil Currie! On fleet handicap basis, it was to be Dave Lawson in his GP that won overall.

The first day of September started somewhat drizzly, especially for those on the training course being run by Nigel Lewis. Not sure what has happened this week, but many seem to have opted for go faster haircuts (Ginge, Jonathan, Shunty, William) - when you see the results it's clear they don't work! As for attire someone was out of step - William sailed in polo shirt and shorts while everyone else was in steamers/drysuits, and even woolly hats!
It was not as windy as the forecast had predicted (unusual for the beginners as it usually blows!). The wind did come through in waves and it depended where you were as to the benefit, or otherwise, obtained. William and Jonathan had managed to break away with one of the gusts in the first race, but 1½ laps later the wind conspired against them to close the substantial lead that they'd secured, and Shunty, with Ruth, broke through to the the lead. Then when the gennaker jammed it was Neil's turn to take another place! In the second race, there was place changes due to mishaps. Andy and Emma hit a mark (as did Scumper and Toggle) which slowed them down for a while; Shunty tried gybing off but went backwards; also, he had problems when the kite halyard jammed causing him to lose a place. Mark Rimmer should have been on capsize drill the number of times he tipped it in. An incident in the first race led to a protest between Scumper and Shunty, but the protest committee couldn't determine what had happened so the results stood. Mustn't forget to mention Roy, with Kirstie, who's back in his capsizing way. Elaine had a practice comeback to sailing in a brief session(?) with William to help blow away a few cobwebs (well apart from the one that seemed to be lingering afterwards in the bar) - depending on Sunday's weather she may be back for more! As for Shunty's comment, Jane said we'd only find out when he does something naughty!? Apparently Bridget didn't sail because she was under the doctor... On handicap, it was Andy and Emma that secured wins in each race
In the GPs Dave and Lynn Lawson sailed consistently with two wins from Hugh and Rhonwen, as did Toddy who took both races from Mik

Congratulations to Sam Hall who won the Junior Plate at South Windermere regatta last week. Yet another piece of silverware for mum to polish!
Due to a busy weekend camping the the mass of helicopters observing our activities over the lake were obliged to use nearby Armathwaite Hall - apologies for the inconvenience! This morning the long weekend seemed to be taking its toll with many people yawning their way to the changing rooms. Andy S came out (not literally, but from the changing rooms, somewhat overdressed I may add) in a dry suit which, it was suggested by his friends(?), was more fitting for his heydays in the GP.
As for the sailing, the winds were better than Sunday but still a little inconsistent in terms of wind strength. The occasional holes and twin wind directions meant sailors had their work cut out to maintain, or in several cases, regain positions and resulted in the handicap and GP series being decided on the last race.
Quite a weekend - Southport boats capsize on purpose to experiment going turtle (somewhat difficult in our northern end) and was the salt out of their fittings. Bass boats capsize (no reason [or name] given), collide and cause some damage. Emma showed Sally the way around the course in her first ever race helming a topper (screaming continued to be the order of the day). Comments let slip about men wearing knickers. Barbeque lovers were not put off by the odd shower, or naked chef (or was that just a myth?). Also, there was the couple spotted leaving Derwent Lodge sometime after breakfast (in separate cars!). Silence started to rein in the webmaster's presence (I wonder why?!)
With over 40 boats (+Southport visitors) racing, overall it proved to be an excellent weekend and the overcast weather encountered on Saturday seems to be just a distant memory.....

At last, the sunny weather has found its way through the clouds, and brought along with it some wind to keep the boats moving most of the time (at least). At times, there were some gusts that allowed the boats to plane, but with no capsizes the rescue crews were able to concentrate more on the sunbathing rather rescuing! In the evening there was a quiz to test if anyone was still alert. Despite a slight error in adding up Neil Currie and Co still came out on top with 53/70. There were many red faces in the evening, but we'll assume that was down to the sun rather than the cocktails, wine, lager, etc, etc!
Big E is still getting to grips with driving a laser - on Saturday his attempts to launch were interesting, as co-ordinating putting down the rudder, and centreboard, pulling in the sails, and avoiding obstacles such as the jetty seemed beyond him for some moments! He's a clever lad, so no doubt he'll catch on quick. He reckons he doesn't want to upset Toggle by beating him too soon - although he's kept his word to date, how long will that last?
Rule books were out at lunchtime when Dave Nic protested Ginge, but it came to nothing when it was thrown out for failing to comply with the required process (sounds interesting, but it wasn't really)
Life on the campsite is as interesting as ever, with a naked cleaner pressure washing the gents toilet walls (only due to mould nothing more nasty!). Squatters were noted taking over spare caravans and tents, and became known as the borrowers for all the bits 'n' pieces that they acquired for their stay. Shunty was awarded a new nickname for the delayed pick up of various conversations - welcome Digi Steve.
Reason # 69: As I don't like Baileys I'll never have one of them!!

Normally the OD would get three points for race organisation, but in today's pursuit scheduled OD Rory Yardley was substituted by Mike Moore which allowed Rory to race. As with other pursuit races in this series, the finish was very close, and various places changed in the final minute or so of the race. A beat to 0 enabled three RS400s to break through pushing Rory into 4th place. Scumper's 1st puts him in pole position in the series but equal on points to Hugh, and a point ahead of Shunty.
The sunny weather on Friday meant many started the weekend early by camping on site, together with 12 visiting boats from Southport SC. So there were several barbeques ablaze, together with scented candles to try and dissipate the midges! One not so rowdy group broke into cocktail mode slightly ahead of schedule, and, as ever, there was the odd sore head to be nursed this morning! Of course there were tales to tell of missing bags - Rich Hodgkins had managed to leave a bag on a train when changing trains at Preston. Virgin were very good at locating it but could do nothing other than let it travel on to Manchester and get it sent back to Lancaster. It's a shame that Rich had already travelled up to Penrith to be picked up by mum Bridget, so Bridget, who had hurriedly finished her barbeque before going for Rich had an extended trip to Lancaster to pick up the bag. This all resulted in a 80min trip being extended to 4 hrs! Bridget kept on smiling though, and the not so rowdy group stayed up to crack another bottle of wine with her.
The second race of the day was part of a long championship series. They same time waits for no man, and OD Mike Moore seemed to take this to heart. As soon as he had set the line and the course he started the sequence whether or not everyone was on the water - indeed, some had stiil to put their sails up. At the time the handicap fleet started, there were still six boats a couple of minutes from the line, so they endured what could be described as their second pursuit of the day catching up with the rest of the fleet. William and Lesley were one pair that had to do this - they managed to secure a clear second to Shunty and Ruth on the water, but on handicap came 4th.

With Bass Week over and done with, many tend to have a rest from sailing or go for a holiday, so this weekend is typically quiet, to the extent that no sailing was scheduled for yesterday (That didn't stop Herb turning up for duty though!).
Today, despite a reasonable forecast for wind, the wind was as shy as the number of sailors. A late arrival by a Tim Smith enabled the mirrors to have a separate start, but Dave and Sarah Nicholson had to join the handicap fleet for their racing. Scumper didn't have a crew, or a gennaker, but at the last minute took the opportunity to sail Robbie D's RS200 with Ethan. The wind had plenty of holes in it, especially down the western shore, but the fleets kept moving sufficiently to complete the race in an hour.
The wind for the afternoon race didn't look too promising, but the course was set where the wind was, and it picked up sufficiently to sit out at times. William and Jonathan were in the only RS400 for the race, and were maintaining a good lead until the main halyard snapped - so much for a 4 month old piece of string!
It was to be Joan Hardie that won the race on handicap from Robbie D and Ethan
Above are a couple of photos of rescue crew staff Josh and Tom taken during Bass Week - for some reason Baywatch, or the Jolly Green Giant, springs to mind!
If you enjoyed the week and are planning ahead for next year then put 2 - 10 August in your diary (you won't be the first)
As Andy Smith is neither a lady, nor a crew, I assume dad Alan won the race with Andy crewing - well done - use Club update for full results. So much for making assumptions - it was Emma that won - Well done!
Sam Hall has today won the Mount Haes Trophy at this year's NSSA Regatta being held in Plymouth
A gentle breeze came and went, came back again and disappeared totally over the course of the afternoon. The rain clouds that came in failed to deliver any wind, and fortunately not too much rain either!
Although there was a light breeze for the first beat, it almost totally disappeared for the two downwind legs, and boats were hunting out whatever zephyrs they could. It seemed as if the afternoon sea breeze (without any sun?) was coming in from the west, and this helped boats finish more quickly, and build up hopes for a more settled second race. However, the breeze came back from the north east, swung to the east just before the start, at which point the OD gave up and postponed racing until Sunday.
The only tales to tell are about Sally - first of all she managed to put her clothes on the newly varnished woodwork in the changing rooms, and then was at risk of having William disqualified for laughing too much, and generating extra air propelling them through a windless course!
Others felt that winter had come early and were relieved to have a warm shower after their sail. You'd think they'd keep warm by bailing out all that rain water! The following webcam shows the new shower cubicles that form part of the recent upgrade of the ladies changing area - just click on it for an update!
Overnight rain had cleared and there was a cloudy start to Sunday's racing. The forecast for 9mph SE wind seemed as if it may hold true, until the fleet started to prepare and the wind swung to the SW! However, the direction was relatively steady, and the breeze held, if not increased as the morning went on.
The race that was postponed on Saturday was squeezed into afternoon racing, allowing the sailors to make the most of the excellent sailing weather. That doesn't mean that there weren't any challenges.
At one leeward mark, Dave Wright capsized and righted just before the RS400s came roaring in. He did right it, only to find his mainsheet had lassoed the mark - the query was what at what stage he would free it and what would happen to the racing boats trying to round the mark?!!! Fortunately for most people's sake the boat capsized again.
Andy and Emma were having a good day until one spinnaker drop went slightly wrong, and they lost some ground. It was only at the end of the day that Andy noticed, and admitted, that he'd been sailing without any bungs in - no wonder the boat was somewhat heavy by the end of the day.
With Neil continuing to play Mr Grumpy with Judith, it's no wonder she's said he can have a new boat - so long as it's single handed!
The last race of the day was so shifty that the RS400s struggled to beat the other fleets to the windward mark, and then the course took the fleet under the shade of Sale Fell, making it difficult to break away. Neil went low to stay in the breeze, but Scumper and Zephyr took, and kept the lead to take the winning horn and the series.
The following four boats in the series all tied with 11 points, demonstrating just how close the racing has been - very little room for mistakes. Andy's 1st in the morning secured 2nd place, Robbie D and Ethan's 3rd secured 3rd, and Neil finished ahead of Bean and Naomi to get 4th.
The GPs only sailed three races, so Julian Cruickshank and son's consistent sailing, with two 1sts, won him the series.
Tim Smith had three bullets to win the Mirror trophy, only dropping one race to brother Rob, who did not sail the final race due to a temporarily incurable leak!
With weather like this it's easy to forget the rather grey and cold day that was endured on Saturday. Perhaps it'll stay with us for a few hours more at least?!

The high winds of the first race led to several casualties, including various team Bass boats (or was it all?!). In fact the strength of it caused Rob Smith to have a change of mind and he opted to crew for twin brother Tim instead of sailing single handed. The OD (and the twins brother) reckoned if they had a spinnaker system that worked they would have done wonders - such is life! Rob's change of mind meant that Beanacrew, specially prepared for the weekend was left on the shore for (another) brother Andy to rescue (amidst various creaks and groans - was that Andy or the boat though?!) with the help of Scumper.
The wind did ease slightly for the other races, and there were no further casualties. Hector Cisneros with son Ben got in the groove and secured three firsts to have a comfortable overnight lead.
The OD was concerned at one stage that he couldn't find the black flag on the committee boat, but as it turned out, all apart from one boat were well behaved and stayed clear of the line. In 5 hours the OD successfully had all four races completed, and boats ashore.
The sailors are all having an early meal followed by a sumo wrestling competition - no peace for the wicked!
The winds for Sunday were forecast to be relatively light - and how right it was. It proved to be a totally different kettle of fish.
The promised wind was very light to non existent. The OD eventually tried to start racing which resulted in a series of postponements, general recalls, round the ends and a black flag - well worth finding! All these starts used up what little wind there was so that when the fleet finally got under way the wind died totally at which point the OD abandoned the race - or was it because Rob and Tim were last? You can't have a Smith in last place! The abandonment brought cheers from the fleet that could be heard from the shore.
If it was possible, the wind died further with the lake becoming a mill pond. The OD gave up and abandoned the racing leaving the results as they stood from overnight. This scuppered Mik and Toddy's cunning plan of getting everyone to pack up, whilst they waited for the sea breeze to come and get two good results.
At the prize giving, winning helm Hector Cisneros thanked the club for its hospitality, and the OD for some challenging courses, as well as abandoning the one race of the day that finally got under way. Also, he told the youths not to be dis-heartened by their performances on Saturday as it had been one of the most challenging days sailing that he'd had in years.

Well, with the Mirror (er, Bass) Forum down I will have to moan on the website. It's not good enough. There I am taking a well earned break from Bass at the Brit GP when, suddenly, all these Mirrors go out. There's Twin (soccer's stopped), Des (with B&Q sponsorship), Stato (thought he'd retired), and even Toddy (complete with video of his Ripon exploits). And now I'm getting s------ in two series. Still, at least we had a Finnish (and Ferrari) win in the GP!
Mik.
What a difference a day makes. The sun shone all day, the wind blew enough most of the time, and there were shifts that made all the difference (if you were on the right side of them!).
First of all an apology to Toggle - there may have been a one sided tale told about his efforts in the Lord Birkett, and the bit about the training was a joke - there aren't actually any places available until next year, but Tog doesn't really need to attend. Apparently, he was caught out in the massive squall that brought the fleet back from the islands, fell, or was washed out of the back, and broke his tiller necessitating his tow back by the gin palace.
In the GPs Hugh and Rhonwen had two wins, but they had to work hard for it as Mike Fairlamb with Sam Hall kept taking the lead, though in the 2nd race Mike retired after rounding a mark incorrectly. Ginge and Bridget were making hay while the sun shone, and then cooled off with a capsize. Ken Bell clearly wasn't making hay, came for a sail and finished second with Val.
Tim Smith beat off competition from twin brother Rob, and secured another couple of wins.
In the handicap fleet, there were ups and downs. William, with second crew of the weekend Sally, was several minutes late for the start, but had some good luck with the winds to pull back on Roy and Kirstie to such an extent that he had to avoid Roy when he capsized just in front of him on a gybe mark. Apparently, a 50 degree wind shift on the start line prevented Shunty and Neil from being able to cross the line. Confusion over the course (which may well have changed after it was first displayed) meant Shunty lost out several hundred metres by heading to 9 instead of 0. Although Neil and Judith won on the water, the wind suited the RS200s best of all, and honours went to Andy and Emma.
Roy was left behind for the start of the second race (apparently retying his battens), leaving William, Neil and Shunty to have some good racing. Although William mastered the beats (or was it make the most of some incredible shifts?) to take the lead a couple of times, he lost out off wind to Neil and Shunty. The wind faded somewhat towards the end of the race allowing the RS200s to catch up. Robbie D and Ethan would have easily won had they not got their gennaker stuck, so it was to be Andy and Emma that again won on handicap.

Well Toggle's found another way of demonstrating how to use a boat single handed - trust him to be different, most of us stay in the boat! At today's Lord Birkett 2007 Toggle needed a tow in. |
With the Lord Birkett Trophy being sailed at Ullswater, numbers were slightly down at the club today. The rain held off, but the wind made up for it! The blustery gusts caught out a few including William (with a rather nervous Cristina), Lewis, Mike F, Rory & Toddy.
The first race was a pursuit, and as last week, the finish was fairly close. Shunty, sailing with Cecile, took pole position with Hugh and Rhonwen second. Mike Moore and Mark finished a disgruntled third having been 'delayed' by some of TT Fairlamb's (Mike Moore's nickname for him) antics!
Having had a few gulps of lake water, Cristina was even more cautious about trying the second race! However, she did go out, start and retired at the end of the windward leg (all in 15 mins according to the webcam). There was some good racing, but less eventful with wins going to Shunty, Hugh, and Tim Smith
As for the gossip, apparently height matters. When Shunty was coming ashore he had stepped out the boat expecting the water to be up to his knees, but it was more like waist deep. A comment that it would have been knee deep on anyone else, started the banter about him being the shortest (adult) helm - but Mike F piped up obviously vying for the trophy. I can't remember the third person to get involved in this discussion, but fortunately the proposed line-up to verify the shorty didn't happen.
Here's some links for videos from last week's training at Ripon. Starting Starting 2 Starting 3 Windward mark
...Old habits that is! Roy was glad to be back at the helm again with Kirsty crewing. It's a shame he wasn't au fait with the start times of the pursuit race as he, and several other RS400s, seemed to be oblivious to the fact that they should be starting, which made William and Jonathan very nervous as to whether they had in fact started too early! Over the course of the 70 min pursuit, it was the final 5 mins where several places changed - must have been some good handicapping!
As for the second race, Roy was again someway behind the rest of the fleet at the start and he topped it off with a capsize on the gybe mark, and finally tried to run Kirsty over when coming ashore (she'd managed to keep her hair dry until then!)
Of course the main sailing of the weekend is the Martin 16 National Championships, being sailed at Bass for the first time. Commodore Steve Hunt, as OD for the weekend, managed to get in the first 4 races of the 8 race championship. Clearly there is some close competition between the leading boats. The morning races were held in very windy conditions, and one hardy sole raised their spinnaker, but quickly dropped it again. Fortunately the design of the boat is such that the risk of capsize is minimal (I think!) Sunday morning started with what seemed like a nice southerly, but it never quite had the oomphh(?) that the sailors would have appreciated. The Martins continued to have some very close racing, and with just one discard tensions were high leading to a protest!

The delay caused by the Martin 16's protest proved to be quite fortuitous as there was not a lot of wind, so after the prize giving the boats took to the water for the Jimmy Lancaster Memorial pennant as the breeze seemed to have filled in from the SW. By the time the race started the wind had faded, and a course set for marks 12 and 13 proved too much for William (though Cristina thought she'd missed the opportunity of a trip around the lake!) and he headed straight for shore. Most of the others persevered, but it was to be another 25 mins before the brezze came back, but this time from the South. With a bit of forward thinking, Shunty had included 10 in the course, and that was to be where he shortened the course after 45 mins.
When the fleet handicaps were calculated, it was Hugh and Rhonwen that proved to be the overall winners.

Heard the story about the bus journey from Whitehaven to Cockermouth that took 3½ hours? No, it wasn't due to an in efficient bus service, a mechanical breakdown, heavy traffic, or weather conditions. A certain (lone) passenger fell asleep, and missed her stop, and woke up somewhere near Wigton. When she realised her predicament, she admitted to rolling in the aisles laughing (her words!) and having to tell herself to stop [laughing], but these fits of laughter kept coming back as her journey continued to the terminus at Carlisle and back to where she was first heading. As demanded by her friend, she eventually sent a text to say she was safely back home. Of course, by the time she arrived at work on Monday the whole office knew about the trip - so why shouldn't you? Thanks to our very own Cecile for sharing this with us (and the rest of the club!)

Well actually yes! Congratulations to Sam Hall for achieving 1st U14 and 4th overall at last weekend's Bolton North West Junior Travellers event
Unfortunately those of you that enjoy voicing their opinions on the forum are stumped for the time being! The servers that we use have not been accessible for some days, and there are no clues as to when (or if) the issues will be resolved.
Congratulations to Lesley following her marriage to Andrew yesterday. Hopefully we'll see her back at the front end of William's boat some time during Bass Week |
Drizzle and no wind led to OD Alan Smith abandoning racing on Sunday bringing the weekend series to an early conclusion.
Mark Somerville won another handicap series, Scott Beattie and John Somerville had their first sail in many months (or is it this season?) and won both races from Mike Moore. Mike Fairlamb kept the senior moments at bay to win the series from Hugh Godfrey.
Following some synchronised sailing when Mik and Toddy capsized simultaneously, and then both went turtle, Toddy went on to win the race, and his first series - Well done!!

Mr Commodore
Writing to thank you, Elaine, the council and the rest of the club for agreeing to our wedding reception being held at the club.
We had an absolutely fantastic day, one to remember for sure! We hope that everyone who came had a great time. The weather was kind to us which meant the club provided a beautiful setting which many of our friends and family thought good enough to consider moving up here!
Many thanks also to all the club members for their lovely gifts and for sharing our day.
Hope that the event proved financially profitable; judging by the photos of the evening that we've seen it is a wonder if there was anything left behind the bar at the end of the night.
On the subject of the bar, thanks too to Sonja and Richard, and everyone else who helped out in keeping guests' thirsts at bay.
Many thanks once again,
Andy & Em xx
Following the excess wind and rain leading up to the weekend, all the sailors had to contend with was sunshine and showers. The winds were light, and racing on Sunday was delayed waiting for the wind to fill in. Attempts to sail the final race were abandoned. Neil Platt from Bolton & West Kirby, with our own Sally Roberts, had equal points with Martin Brennan from Hollingworth, but won the series on the last race tie break.

....or so it would seem as there seemed to be so many people whinging after the morning race. First there was the OD arriving early to see a lake with very little wind and wanting to abandon at 11am, but he was assured by William that the wind would have filled in by 11.30, and it did! As Hugh must have had a late night, and was not at the club at the due time, Rhonwen offered to be OD for the morning allowing Stu and Debbie Spence to free themselves of the worries of course setting and go racing. When Hugh did turn up, he was seconded into driving the Bates. Roy Blackburn, not having had his crew snatched from under him for a second time, was out in plenty of time for his first race in a month only to be late for the start! Shunty had secured the lead and managed to go around the leeward mark the wrong way only to be told part way up the beat. However, he had a very peculiar way of unwinding to correct his mistake, and no-one's really sure if he managed it, but Steve was too dizzy to remember! Mike Moore was keeping up with the leading RS400s well until the final run when the wind managed to evade him and took away his chances of winning. Amanda Bainbridge was a bit confussled with the extra sausage in the course and was somewhat relieved when she finally heard her finish gun. To counter this, it was good for Dave Wright and son Connor to finish their first ever race. The OD was somewhat surprised at the the amounting of whooping and air punching that was going on - what will happen when they win their first race?! Lewis Tyson, always open for a challenge opted to sail with William in an RS400 rather than in his Topper, and enjoyed it so much he wanted more in the afternoon.
The afternoon breeze was slightly fresher than the morning, and even resulted in the odd capsize. In fact Sam missed his toe straps before the start and was first to go in, whether this was the cause of Dave and Connor capsizing as well we're not sure, but they were very close together at the time. As for the start, there must have been too many people in the committee boat, as everyone was convinced they had the perfect start only to be brought back with a general recall! After another general recall, stand in OD cleared the boat, focussed on the job in hand, and got everyone away - third time lucky! Although Shunty got clear away this time, with no mishaps, and won the race, other boats had mixed fortunes, and the results were spread across the various fleets.
Lewis was enjoying the RS400 again, but found the gusting reaches challenging and realised that tugging sheets soon rip through bare hands - hopefully William won't be held up for child abuse! At one stage Robbie D thought Scumper had put in an enthusiastic tack and almost filled up, so he was encouraging him to go a bit further over - then he realised it was William and Lewis, but he was still willing them to capsize!
Congratulations to Sam Hall in achieving 1st U14 and 3rd overall at a Junior NW Travellers open meeting held at Ullswater YC on 9th June. Joe Watkins was 3rd U14.
As for Saturday, the wait was worth it...
After an intermittent breeze at the start of the afternoon, it eventually filled in from the north to get sailing underway. William, with Kirsty Somerville, was a little premature(?!) and returned through the line trying miserably to avoid the oncoming fleet! No major collisions, but he did a couple of turns for good measure. Perhaps it was payback for pinching Roy's crew who had to stand in and man the Bates.
William did get on the tail of Neil and Judith by the windward mark, but Neil was to disappear off wind never to be caught, leaving William to tussle with Paul Burnell.
Although a dark cloud appeared (it probably brought the wind!) the sun shone all afternoon and led to some glorious sailing conditions.
In the second race, Mark Somerville brought out a super light crew - Ethan! Although they could catch Neil, they pulled ahead of William who struggled to break free from Mike and Mark in the F15. Although William eventually made headway, it wasn't enough to beat Mike on handicap. Neil leads the new series
In the GPs Hugh and Rhonwen stayed ahead of Dave and Sarah Nicholson to take an early lead in the Autumn Cup
The results for Thursday's Night Jar have been calculated and displayed below. As ever, the results seem to cause controversy. All we can do is blame the computer, the OD and anyone other than the helms (well, so it seems!)

Ethan Dawson aged 8 sailing with dad Robin and Robert Cruickshank aged 6 sailing with dad Julian both tied for first place once the handicap was calculated. This series is going to be closely fought for a few weeks to come.
The weekend saw a variety of races with strong sailing in all fleets. In the GP 14 fleet three couples were in the winning places in all the races over the weekend. On Saturday’s spring cup Mike Fairlamb and Eric Smith were first, Hugh Godfrey and Rhonwen Bryce second and Val and Ken Bell third. Hugh Godfrey and Rhonwen Bryce are leading the series overall. On Sunday Hugh Godfrey and Rhonwen Bryce were first, Mike Fairlamb and Eric Smith were second and Val and Ken Bell third, overall Mike Fairlamb and Eric Smith are leading the Mustard pot series. In the handicap fleet on Saturday Rory Yardley first, Mike Moore second and Neil and Judith Currie third. On Sunday the handicap fleet were sailing for the Dodd trophy first was Mike Moore , Neil and Judith Currie second and Mark Somerville third. Sunday afternoon was a race around the lake for the RNLI pennant. With sunny skies and a consistent wind many sailors enjoyed the views from around the lake. Mike Moore was first to cross the line with Jack and Joan Hardie second and Mike Fairlamb and Eric Smith third. The handicaps are still to be calculated for the final positions, and word has it they may have been subject to protest!
A warm southerly breeze greeted sailors this afternoon for the second race in the Celebrity Glass Pursuit series. The races are sailed on a fleet handicap basis whereby the slowest fleet sets off first and then the faster fleets start at timed intervals based on Portsmouth yardstick. The start times were adjusted to allow for a 70 min race for the mirror fleet. So when the first warning signal was made, Mike Moore and William Carruthers started to think about getting their boats ready for the water as they had 24 and 28 mins respectively until their starts! When William and Jonathan got onto the water they decided to check the gennaker was rigged correctly - just as well because the downhaul was wrapped around it causing it to fly in the shape of a wine glass. They opted to try and resolve it on the water, which they did, but by which time they some distance from the start line with only 4 mins until their start so they hardened up, headed for the line and made it with 15 secs to spare! With the first mark being at Scarness it was to be quite a long beat in strengthening winds.
As time passed, William in his RS400 and Neil Garrison in his Dart closed the gap with the leaders and passed several boats on the exciting reaches, but Hugh and Rhonwen managed to keep the lead from Mike and Eric. Neil Garrison secured a third, and Mike held off William on the final couple of legs.
With having an initial beat into Scarness and then a smaller general lap in the bay, the windward mark proved interesting and challenging as the fleet had to loop around it - there were a couple of capsizes and several near misses!
The 2nd race started off in lighter airs with a beat to Scarness again, but as the fleet sailed deeper into the main bay the wind eased and swung and it seemed a great struggle to even complete the lap. But the OD must have smelt something in the air because just after lead boat Neil and Judith Currie crossed through YZ on the start of the 2nd beat the wind started to fill in from the SW, and Neil promptly put up his gennaker and started to build a substantial lead from William. The wind continued to fill in, and William, having held a higher course, eventually flew his gennaker. In the short time it seemed to take to get to 7, Neil's lead had been eroded and William was on his tail. However, the positions did not change after that and when the results were calculated it was to be Rory Yardley in a Vareo that won ahead of Mike Moore.
In the GPs, Val and Ken Bell were ahead of the fleet in the bay until the cruel shifts as the wind swung to the SW enabled Hugh and Mike to break through.

The forecast was for more wind than Sunday, but there was considerably less as the boats were rigged. By the time the boats were on the water the wind had filled in and looked considerably more promising but, as ever, there were some big shifts to contend with and as a result the fleets were all well intermingled at the windward mark.
The gusts kept coming through, and boats had to work hard to stay upright on the reaches. Rhonwen was caught out by a gust just at the stage when her rudder had lifted, so she ended up in the water (score of 5.2 for the back flip?!). Not content with 5.2 for artistic content Rhonwen tried even harder in the final race and achieved a 5.5 for her capsize. The fact that Sam was laughing at the time isn't sufficient to raise the score any more!
The Mirror results may look like it was a done deal with Mik Chappell taking both races - what it doesn't show is that Toddy was in front of him for quite some time. This is a great confidence booster and could be a sign of things to come.
As Ian Preston and Jess Roberts were sailing today, Mike Moore and Mark Rimmer did some pot hunting in the F15 fleet and it paid off with two firsts to take the Jack Pot Trophy.
The final results for the handicap fleet were all dependant on the last race with no less than four in contention for the May Holiday Trophy. Robbie D and Ethan remained in the frame until the final run when Ethan didn't manage to hold the tiller straight for quite long enough and they capsized. Scumper and Toggle were first to the windward mark but lost the lead to William and Jonathan at the next gybe mark. The gusting tight reach was just too much and William had to recover from a near capsize allowing Shunty and Ruth to have their turn in the lead! But that wasn't it, the three RS400s remained in close contention, with the lead changing a couple of times, until the final lap when Shunty broke away. When the handicaps were calculated Joan Hardie was first with Shunty second, more than enough for him to win the trophy.
The Graduates have now completed their championship and the final results are shown below

The initial forecast of wind and rain seemed to be correct, and as the boats prepared for the race the wind seemed to pick up. However, once the racing was under way the stronger gusts had eased and the sailors had to contend with shifts being dependant on where the gusts were coming from. 30 mins into the race and the wind faded almost completely as a northerly breeze tried to fight with the easterly that had prevailed until then. At lunchtime the wind seemed to have settled down, but there's plenty of time for things to change before the next race.... Would Neil and Judith venture out? They did untie the cover but after a bit of pondering of the gusts passing through, retied it and gave up for the day.
Well the race did ease by the time the 2nd race started, however, just after the lead boats rounded the windward mark the first squall came in, and that sent Shunty for a swim allowing William past, but with the wind gusting William had to drop the gennaker for the gybe mark. Scumper having had to return to shore to re-rig the gennaker again was fortunate that the race sequence had been postponed, made best use of Toggle's weight and held the gennaker to the gybe mark to take the lead which he maintained for the full race.
The gusts did come and go, but when they were there everyone had to be on their guard as massive shifts were encountered on the beat, and all they could do off wind was bear away and enjoy!
The wind seemed to increase even more before the final race of the day (only to ease at the top of the beat!). When the fleet was out of the shade of the shore the wind was certainly there in force and there were some spectacular reaches that everyone survived.
In the GPs Dave Lawson was sailing with Ken Bell and won both races from Mike Fairlamb and Sally Roberts. Scumper and Toggle led the handicap fleet but there were strong challenges from Robbie D with Matty Fairlamb in an RS200. The standard of racing has been very high and positions seem to be dependant on being in the right place to get the wind, as well as making less mistakes than the other competitors.
With strong on-shore winds, returning to shore after the race was spectacular at times as the boats had little steerage due to raised centreboards and rudders. Sam Hall was quoted as demonstrated 'an interesting way' of stopping his boat. Jo Hardie ended up in the reeds (sshhh - don't tell the National Park) after a capsize. John Halliday had to make several attempts to get ashore safely as he tried to cope with some unplanned gybes, but Shunty was there (waist deep) to lend a helping hand
One last race for the Graduates tomorrow, but two more for the club boats - will the forecast prove right again? If so there'll be some tired people tomorrow evening!

Following yesterday's wedding celebrations, many of the guests were surprisingly bright after having danced the night away into the early hours. Photos will follow (when someone sends them to me!)
Some of the tales of woe
Scandal - Andy T was black balled in (not from) the club (make of that what
you will)
Joanie was unusually under the weather (did the champagne have anything to do
with it?) two days on the trot
Claralaraloo had a beer shampoo following some frolicking with T
Charlotte's bike was misappropriated at some unearthly hour but Elaine waited
until the cold light of day to get her point across
T had an extreme wedgie, but was it caught on CCTV?!!
As for the sailing, it has been expected that Saturday would be the best day of the weekend, but the forecast keeps changing! The wind, as ever, had some challenging, unpredictable, shifts which caught many out but made up for it with some good gusts on the reaches from time to time. There were a few capsizes, and some near ones as well.

Congratulations to Andy and Emma following their wedding earlier this afternoon. The celebrations will continue on throughout the evening |
As expected, the wind eased for the second day of the handicap open meeting. With an earlier than usual start the OD was able to run all three races.
The wind shifts may have been subtle, but they could be deadly and several places changed as a result. This led to the overall result resting on the final race. This is where Naomi (the love of Bean's life) gets a special mention - partly because she didn't get one last time L, but mainly because if she'd had the opportunity to fly the gennaker on the final reach she and Bean would have made up the necessary five secs required to beat Scumper and Zefer, and take the winning trophy from them.
Roy Blackburn was getting back in the swing (instead of swim for a change) and succeeded in being first to the windward mark in two of the races. Unfortunately, the first time he did it he was set on rounding it to port instead of starboard and ended up in the way of various boats on his tail.
Toggle did a bit of trawling at one stage, but still secured a prize as first Vareo, Mark Rimmer received a prize in his first Bass open. Lewis Tyson was first Topper. Ruth Critchley received a prize for putting up with her helm who had spat out his dummy twice in one day - we'll let him off opting out of Saturday's race after the first beat (otherwise it would have been a hat-trick). In fact it seems that only Bass members received prizes on this rare occasion. One visitor that appeared late on Saturday afternoon was unwelcome and ejected from the clubhouse (well, it was a mouse!)

The high winds that started on Friday were still around for the FA Cup final - were these the reasons why there were few takers for the Handicap Open? Those members that turned up were only slightly less reluctant to go on the water than the OD! After a quick show of hands it was decided to race, and all but the feint-hearted ventured out. Scumper and Zefer were the first to go out, but after 10mins (during which time no-one else had followed them) came ashore (but only to rig their gennaker correctly as it would only fly properly on port tack).
Six boats did go out, Scumper was the first to capsize, followed by Jonathan Connor, Sam Hall, Ian Macpherson, and Roy Blackburn. The only survivor was Shunty and Ruth - they sailed the first beat and then came straight ashore.
Roy's crew for the weekend is Megan, a young, new member. She admitted to never having sailed so fast, and that was without the gennaker! Of course, as mentioned earlier, Roy's old habits die hard, and they ended up swimming! But they'll be back for more tomorrow.
As it seemed to be a dead cert that all those taking to the water would be going for a swim the only betting was to be on how long they would stay upright!
Those that didn't risk life and limb, stayed ashore and enjoyed afternoon tea and biscuits......
With so many capsizes, the OD called it a day after the first race and postponed sailing until Sunday and then sat back and watched the rest of the cup final. First race 10.30!

The wind was much lighter this weekend than we've all been used to (well apart from those that sail on Thursday evenings), and the rain managed to hold off until the end of the final race of a six race series.
Saturday's races were short and sharp, and with the results being calculated on personal handicap basis it was nigh on impossible to guess where you'd finish! Amanda Bainbridge in a topper secured overnight lead with two firsts, but with not sailing on Sunday she slipped back to eighth overall.
Sunday's races were more drawn out and the shifting gusts proved challenging. As the wind picked up slightly in the afternoon there was at least one capsize, various opportunities to plane (which Nigel Lewis was seen taking advantage of instead of heading on the close reach to the mark - he had to take the spinnaker down and beat back!).
As with last week, consistency won the day, and it was to be Mike Moore with Mark Rimmer that won the series from John and Janis Halliday in an RS400

The Bank Holiday weekend finished off with a two race series which saw more capsizes from experienced sailors than the whole of last year put together! Bean won the first race but went in 3 times in the second and then retired. Hugh & Rhonwen were second in the first race but also retired after 3 swims. William & Jonathan Connor only went swimming once (just yards from the finish), but did manage to wind up Mike Moore once more by positioning his capsized boat on Mike's lay line as he headed to the finish.
After sailing the morning race in a N12, Barry Lancaster and Martin Wright tactically opted to sail the afternoon race in a GP, only to lose their genny halyard - perhaps it was getting tired after four capsizes?!
Again, there was a mass of sail washing required as the fleet returned to shore
Although the second race was relatively short, more wind seemed to pass through in a 5-10 min squall than would normally pass through in a full race!
Consistency won the day - Andy and Emma had two 3rds and won the series

The poor weather forecast was right! Wind and torrential rain at times. Several capsizes (Shunty, Scumper, Sam Hall, John Halliday, Toggle, etc) and some good reaches to make up for it.
The afternoon race for club sailors was the Albert Bates Retirement Trophy - a pennant race that typically takes the fleet around the lake. As the wind was from a SW direction, the course can be challenging past Scarness, so the OD asked the Catapults whether or not they wanted to risk spoiling a good race, but they were up for it!
The first few legs in the main bay were in extremely blustery conditions and resulted in numerous capsizes both on the beat and at gybe marks (and it thinned the fleet out a little!). Scarness seemed top be particularly sheltered and boats were drifting for a short while trying to catch the wind. However, once they broke through, all the fleet had to contend with was the gusts!
Robbie D (who had been late for the start), Shunty, and Scumper (also, a late starter) were all relatively close as they rounded 13 to head back up the lake, but Robin took the East shore and carried more gusts while Steve took the West shore. So it was Robbie D and Toggle that crossed the line first (in Roy's RS400), and won overall on fleet handicap - Are the boys back in town (as Toggle put it)? - No was the resounding comment from Scumper
The Catapults may well have regretted the option of going around the lake, as tacking whilst drifting seems to prove difficult for them! At least it would give them a brief rest before the next set of gusts!

In addition to club racing the Catapult Association are holding an open meeting over the weekend with a fleet of 10 boats.
The wind was a little shy at first, but the OD went down to Scarness (where the committee and rescue boat crews spotted the osprey doing a bit of fishing 100m away!), set a line to beat back up to six and the wind duly filled in from the South. A quick repositioning of the committee boat (which meant the line was in fact back to front, but only Mike Moore noticed and stuck his oar in about that!) led to a good sail down part way down the lake in a good breeze. Despite the wind seemingly being in a true direction, Shunty reported some challenging shifts (or did he just get it wrong?) that resulted in some close racing.
The start for the second race was moved into the main bay to avoid the fleets getting stuck down the lake if the wind faded. The line was set for a Southerly breeze, and just as the start sequence was about to commence the wind started to fill from the SW. Again the line was hurriedly moved for a beat to 0, and the fleets started with a fetch to 0, but the swinging wind did result in boats having to tack (phew!). Not an ideal course, but time was getting on, and the risk of the wind fading continued to increase.
Fortunately the wind held long enough to finish the race.
Phil Hodgkins celebrated his 21st later in the evening - champagne and caviar! What did you all miss? Well there were some not too embarrassing photos of his early years, tales of how Bridget gave birth to him after a little 'back ache', plentisome buffet, birthday cake with loads of candles (possibly 21?), a thank you speech (no tears were openly shed!), loads of chatting and drinking (no doubt a few sore heads to follow), and a good time was had by all.

... The weather that is! The good weather's resulted in another good turnout for Thursday evening racing, or is it just Pat's after race food?
The weekend should start off well, but they reckon rain's on its way L
This weekend was a little quieter due to Andy Smith & Co venturing to Edinburgh for his stag night. Andy did take his passport with him, but he obviously didn't realise that there is no passport control to cross the Scottish border (even the Welsh charge to cross the Severn bridge!). 30 people went up there, and it's certain that most will return before the wedding.
Rhonwen's comments regarding Saturday's courses were less than positive - However, it was explained that the courses were set for the changeable wind, it's just that the wind didn't change!
Mike Chappell misjudged the depth of water when going up the lake on Sunday afternoon, and came to a sudden halt as he hit some rocks. Unfortunately, he split the centreboard casing during this unplanned manoeuvre.
The sun has shone all weekend which has suited the well attended training event hosted by Nigel Lewis, with a lot of help from daughter Wendy, and John Crosbie. Despite the variable wind conditions there were many successes including 5 RYA level 2s, 1 RYA level 1, and 1 Junior level 2

The first evening racing of the series got off to a busy start (with a fleet of 21 boats) although, as often occurs, the evening wind was a bit shy. In fact it kept coming and going. Ginge and Dave Nicholson got away from the start only to fall into a hole which let most of the fleet past them. The wind did fill back in to bring them back into the game again, but the frustrations continued...
Sunday started off wet and windy (and it didn't get much better), although not as strong gusts as were encountered on Saturday. Accordingly, there weren't many takers - Mike and William were there for some more, Hugh (or was it Rhonwen?) thought better of it, and Paul Burnell ventured out as well.
Mike sailed the beats well to stay ahead of the RS400s, and although William and Jonathan managed to maintain an overlap on the run to 5, a jammed gennaker halyard meant it would take another lap before William caught up with Mike again. Paul Burnell seemed to be sitting in for Roy in terms of the capsize stakes, since he went in on the first beat, and again on a fetch. On handicap, Mike won the race.
The honourable OD, who had been evacuated from the hen house (well, the hen party lodgings), being concerned about the discontent with the morning's course, was fully intent on putting things right in the afternoon, so with a south westerly wind swinging around Sale Fell, he set a course with two beats - the first to 0, the second to 7, problem being everyone had to sail through the shadow of the fell to get to 7. Shunty, who had managed to get Toggle to crew for the afternoon race, opted to fly his kite part way up to 7 - strange thing to do, especially as he occasionally had to tack with it up! The OD having seen the error of his ways opted to shorten the race after the first lap, and even came to apologise - what a gent!
As for the headline, that refers to Herb - some may think that he's no longer got the control over the ODs in terms of guiding them to a good course, but no, it's because the starter motor on the Bates is in for repair, and the engine is being started with the hand crank, and he admits to not having enough swing anymore!
The first taster session of the season proved to be popular and has hopefully resulted in four new memberships. The next session is to held on 5th June.
The 5mph wind forecast for Saturday seemed to be a bit of an error, but obviously they were not allowing for the Bass micro climate, as Herb reckoned that some of the gusts were hitting force 7 (but that could be fanciful in the extreme!). There were six boats that prepared for the race, five that ventured out, two that finished, and only one that didn't capsize (and that was only because it had the advantage of Mike Moore sitting on the side plus a heavy keel!). As for the christenings, firstly there was Toddy in his new Mirror which, with the bermudan rig, got the mast stuck in the mud. Secondly, William and Jonathan were caught out by a self tacking header (verified by Rhonwen), and ended up donating their first burgee of the season to Neptune.
With no-one to follow, Mike Moore took the wrong course and let Hugh and Rhonwen get into the lead before he realised his mistake. The OD took pity on the two boats still upright, shortened course, picked up the anchor and start line, headed for shore, and abandoned racing for the rest of the day.
The weddings are in fact hen nights - so watch out Blackpool and Edinburgh, various Bass WAGS are on their way!

A bit of balmy weather this weekend. Loads of sunshine, but the wind was somewhat lacking on Saturday. In the first race Shunty, with Tim Chittenden crewing, kept breaking away and then being caught again. On the final run before beating up to the finish Herb warned Steve to mind the anchor warp - Tim lifted the centreboard, but the warp caught on his rudder bringing him to a sudden stop, sufficient enough for William and Elaine to take the lead. On handicap though, Dave and Lynn Lawson took the honours in their GP.
The second race had even less wind and less partakers, and again the honours went to Dave and Lynn.
Sunday started with the lake like a mirror, but the wind started to fill in just after 1130 allowing the racing to get underway before lunch. Scumper was a bit too eager, and responded with an innocent 'was that me?' when he heard the second recall signal. After returning through the line, he had a good beat to be third behind Shunty and John Halliday at the windward mark, and eventually broke through to second.
Mike Fairlamb had a good race and stayed ahead of Dave Lawson until he headed for the wrong mark (could it be an age thing?).
The sea breeze topped up the wind strength in the afternoon, and resulted in a couple of capsizes. Toggle survived the gusts on the first reach to 3, but not the second time around! This slowed him just enough for Mik Chappel to beat him on handicap. The wind suited the RS400s with Shunty and Scumper coming in ahead of Mike Moore.
Mike Fairlamb led the way ahead of Dave Lawson until the final beat to the finish when Dave broke through (Could be that age thing again!?). Special mention for Bridget and Ginge who sailed two races in one day - some time since that happened!
Just see what you've been missing out on - come down and make the most of this Summer weather as you never know how long it will last
After a gentle breeze on Saturday, Sunday proved to be a lot more challenging. The handicap fleet was expanded by the full compliment of RS200s, and they all had some close racing and several capsizes. Robbie D was again involved in the capsize of one of his competitors (the Hardies), although this time he didn't try to skewer them!
The wind picked up in the afternoon, leading to more capsizes - the RS200s all had their fair share, but Paul Burnell and Sam Hall were the only RS400 to go in (x3 or was it x4?). Shunty retired when his kicker broke just as he was having another close race with Scumper and Andy T. Neil and Judith hung on in (almost literally) to keep ahead of William and Toggle who had pipped them at the post in the morning race.
It was good to have four F15s on the water - Scott seemed to be struggling with the first beats but soon got back into the pace to win both races. Dave and Lynn Lawson sailed well again to take both races, but why Lynn ended up hanging on to the bow as they came ashore we may never know!
The traditional Easter egg dump was held on Sunday after racing, and it was quite fitting that the winner was Jack Lawson, grandson of the original organiser of the competition, Jack Lawson, who sadly died last year.
Another breezy day saw a change in crews for some so that they could make the most of the conditions. The Hardies again had to clean the lake mud from their mast head after another capsize. But racing was good even though the same names appeared on the leader board - Scott, Dave and Tim - all of whom have won their respective series with three straight wins. In the handicap fleet, Bean and Naomi in an RS200 worked there way up to get 2nd on handicap pushing Shunty down to 3rd position. As Scumper had two firsts and a second, Shunty couldn't match this even by taking the last race, so the series went to Scumper and Andy T/Zefer.
The wind eased a little for the final afternoon race, but there was still some good gusts to create exciting planing conditions at times.
All in all a busy bank holiday weekend, with good racing and reasonable, dry, weather.
Rich Critchley's been doing some happy snapping again, and here's a couple to whet your appetite. The rest can be found here in the Easter 07 directory

First of all there was the merry go rounds - both the Commodore and his Vice had a go on this one. In the first race, the Celebrity Glass pursuit, Dave Nicholson decided to do some turns after hitting Eric Smith on the head (with his boom!). In the second race Steve Hunt did a couple of pirouettes for Scumper after hitting him as they rounded the mark.
Secondly, there was the jousting competition (or it may have been cooking related) which took place later in the same race. In this one Robbie D, reaching with the gennaker up, failed to skewer Alan Nicholson (fortunately) but Alan was knocked out of his Vareo as he was beating up a separate leg of the course. Apart from a bent pole, and no doubt a big bruise, no real harm was done. Both boats capsized as a result - not to take the glory from Roy who regularly gets a mention for capsizing (even when he hasn't capsized, or so he claims), but he wasn't sailing!
Another exciting days sailing interspersed with calm patches as the wind fought with itself from two directions. With no GPs or Mirrors, there was only the handicap fleet competing and with 12 boats overall.
Due to the changing winds, not surprisingly, finding and staying in the wind or gusts made all the difference. Shunty used the gusts to his advantage to catch Scumper, and finally broke away with a big lead to take the morning race.
The afternoon race was a pennant race that took the boats around the lake. The OD had discussed missing marks at lunchtime and was told that 14 was missing, so left it out of the course. However, after Neil Currie rounded 12 in the lead he headed across to 13 and kept looking and looking but to no avail. So some bright spark suggested the fleet went around 14 instead. Unfortunately this was to seriously disadvantage the leading RS400s and the race was eventually scrapped.
... That was Toggle's thoughts on the events that filled last week's report. Now that may have been because he wasn't here to contribute to the weekends events. Of course, he had to make up for it on Saturday as he learns to get to grips with his RS Vario. It could be that Toggle is finding gybing (without capsizing) one of the more challenging aspects. However, after several capsizes, and much barracking from Scumper and Robbie D, he was still smiling at the end of the day. Whether he feels that way this morning with various aches and bruises who knows?!
Toggle was not the only casualty of the day, but amongst others, we can't fail to mention Roy and Kayla's capsize - much to Kayla's delight, it didn't stop them finishing ahead of William. Subsequent to this Roy exited the boat a little early as they came ashore leaving Kayla to stop it running aground while he waded out of the water. There were several occasions when William and Jonathan were close to joining them in the league of casualties - firstly when the William didn't realise the main had cleated itself again during a tack, and then when a knotted halyard prevented Jonathan getting the gennaker down for so long that they almost ended up on the A66.
As for the racing, Scumper and Andy T left the fast handicap fleet standing having broken into the lead and taken advantage of some of the good gusts that were around. Similarly, Hugh and Rhonwen won both of the GP races comfortably. In the mirror fleet, Mik was back on the water at last showing Toddy (the young(?) pretender) the way home
Well that's the quote of the day (or is it the season?) from Mike Fairlamb. Some winter refinements to his rudder led to a tangle of ropes and his first capsize of the season on the start line of the afternoon race. It must be pointed out (so they told me) that neither Mike, or crew Ian Macpherson, actually went swimming during the capsize. However, they didn't take the trophy for the first ducking of the season - that went to vice commodore Dave Nicholson closely followed by sailing secretary Roy Blackburn and Kayla - Some habits die hard! Having sucessfully completed the first race the gybed (well, didn't quite make it) for the shore and in they went. That was to prove one capsize too many, especially as Kayla was wearing a shorty, and so they didn't sail the second race.
Sunday saw the launch of another new boat which was sailed by William with Jonathan Connor crewing. Although nothing dropped off (apart from the quick release tiller extension!), there still seems to be a mass of ropes that need cutting down to size.
There were 10 boats on the water for the first race in winds that seemed as if they were going to be marginal. By the time Herb had reset the start line in the shifting winds, the wind settled down to the east and led to some good racing which probably took many by surprise, so much so that they opted not to sail the second race.
Jose's excuse for not sailing the 2nd race was that she didn't even have the energy to lift a teapot!
Although Shunty and Ruth won the first race, it was Hugh and Rhonwen that won the second race and the series overall to take Starter's Prize.

NB. To be first to read what's going on at the club don't forget to use the club update link at the top of the page.
The sun has shone for the training and tuning day, and although the wind faded through the middle of the day it turned to the north east to bring a sharp breeze that tempted Toddy to launch his new mirror named Wen.
However, he wasn't the first on the water, that honour went to Daphne and Ian in his Lark. Nor was Toddy the last - Mike and Sue ventured out in a GP.
Many others were doing a bit of head scratching as they tried to work out which bit goes where, especially for those that have changed fleet.
As there are only a couple of weeks until the start of the sailing season, everyone seems to be getting things ready. Working parties have been arranged to prepare the clubhouse, boats and grounds. More boats are being brought back on site.
Those that have changed their boats will be making sure all the bits are there, and checking on settings. The RS200 fleet has increased following the purchase of boats by Andy, Bean and Robbie D.
Having noted Shunty's capsize escapade on the web, some people are taking no chances - Jim Christie has been spotted practising his swimming. His biggest struggle seemed to be blowing up some water wings!
The handbooks are ready and should be arriving through your letterbox any day now.
Ok, so we've had someone taking their boat down to the club, Knowlesy sailing in the South China seas, and to top that Shunty's been practising his swimming when he went sailing at the weekend. Some things never change!
Having read the following note on the website John Knowles felt obliged to send us the following note
Just looked at the web site and my sailing season has started as I'm in Hong Kong at the moment and just had a 26 hour sail 40 mile off the coast of HK in the South China in not too much wind but full moon was great. There was a few problems on my watch (9pm to 2am then back on at 7am) the first was getting trapped by a 5 mile fishing net that kept going off at different angles that took time to find the end of. Good job the moon was out. The second one was coming up on a fleet of fishing boats which I spotted and had to go through the middle of - very good fun! The boat is 42 feet long with a international crew. Including myself there were 4 English, 1 German, 1 Dutch, 1 Italian and 1 Korean. That is it for now going out and about the islands of HK now. Photos when I get back.
John
PS HK sailing club is a very very very nice club if you have the money! and they still have a ff fleet!!
How the other half live! Can you beat that?
Actually, no secret to anyone who's been following the forum. Toddy's building his secret weapon for the new season - a new mirror. You can follow its progress here
You can never have a quick visit to the chandlers at Nichol End, Portinscale, especially if you're served by Nick or Jane. Well when a local reporter went to buy a launch ticket, he didn't get away without writing a book (well a big article) on the life and times of Nick Newby. Want to find out more? Recognise anyone else in the photo shoot? (NO, it's not Toggle)
I don't know what these two have been up to,
but they'll try to suggest it's an après ski activity (For Ian it doesn't
have to be après ski!). Perhaps it's something to do with a missing Mr
Potatohead - has he been lost, murdered, or just kidnapped? What's Lesley like - she spends a week skiing away from her new man, she comes back and he's missed her so much that he proposes marriage! Don't know whether she's trying to get out of crewing, but she said yes. Many congratulations to both Lesley and Andrew. What more can we be in for this year? Pop back later in the week, and I'll add a bit more gossip... |
Talking of gossip, have you heard that Andy and Emma are engaged? Many congratulations to them both. Although Andy was a few months behind brother Nick in asking the question, he'll be walking down the aisle some months ahead of Nick. Andy and Emma are planning to make Emma's dream come true by having their reception at the club later in the year.
Have you noticed anything suspicious when you've been at the club recently? Unfortunately someone's been helping themselves to oil from our tank. Hopefully, the new lock will deter future activity, but if you have anything to report let us know so that we know when to check on the CCTV system.
At the 55th AGM, held on Sunday 3rd December, Steve Hunt gave up his vices (or so we're led to believe) and was elected Commodore for the forthcoming year. After successfully organising the NSSA Regatta this year, Dave Nicholson was elected as vice commodore (he should find organising Bass Week a breeze in comparison!)
At the meeting a discussion took place regarding subscriptions for the forthcoming season. A motion to keep them at current levels was defeated and it was agreed that subscriptions should be increased in line with inflation and set as follows
Ordinary/Associate Member | £139.00 |
Affiliated Member | £56.00 |
Family Member | £63.00 |
Junior Member | £25.00 |
Senior Member | £97.00 |
Country Member | £67.00 |
Launch Fee (Payable for each boat) | £22.50 |
With Hugh Godfrey (aided and abetted by Rhonwen Bryce) stepping down after three years, Roy Blackburn was elected into the post of Hon Sailing Secretary. Also stepping down were Alan Nicholson and Robin Dawson. Toddy (alias Dave Todhunter) and Bridget (alias Jose Hodgkins) were elected to fill the roles of boats & buoys chair, and PRO respectively.
Alan Smith was elected into son Tim's role as Mirror fleet captain.
After much discussion, and a little confusion, the rule regarding junior membership was amended in accordance with the following:
Delete clauses 3A viia and viib and substitute
"3A vii - Junior family members being persons prior to their 18th birthday or
23rd birthday if still undergoing full time education. There shall be no lower
age limit for junior family members. For persons under 16, junior family
membership allows and requires one non sailing parent or guardian to supervise
the junior family member at all times during their attendance at the club.
Junior family members shall be automatically transferred to ordinary or
associate membership on the 31st December following their 18th birthday or 23rd
birthday if still undergoing full time education."
Discussion followed regarding fleet composition, and the way ahead, but at present there are no proposals for change. The new sailing secretary will consider the situation next season and report back to members.
As the meeting closed, Trustee Herb Telford gave a vote of thanks to the retiring Commodore Mik Chappell.
Thanks to Alan Nicholson for these pics of the foreshore (what's left of it). The lake level still has a short way to go until it gets to the flood level of Jan 05, but more rain is on its way.
Herb Telford travelled to London in November to receive his RYA Community Award in the Lifetime Commitment to Sailing category and here he is receiving his gong which he proudly showed around at last night's annual dinner | |
The final race of the season seemed as it may have already happened when those keen sailors arrived, as the lake was mirror like with little prospect of there being sufficient wind. The trickle of wind on the opposite shore did fill in by noon, and with a little persuasion, the fleet of five boats ventured out. As noted last week, the overall result was not to change, as Tim Knowles had already won the series, but it was a pleasant end to the season.
All that remains is for the buoys to be picked up and the boats put away and forget about things for the forthcoming winter months. As if! There are plenty of close season jobs to do, and if you are getting bored don't hesitate to contact Mike, Steve, or Pauline who will put you in the direction of someone that could do with a few hours of your help down at the club

It doesn't take much to confuse this birthday
boy. Perhaps getting a cake two days early was too much of a challenge for
him to make the link with his own birthday! But as you can see, the penny
eventually dropped.
He didn't even have a celebratory drink. Was it his age? No, unfortunately he was facing a two hour drive home following the Commodore's thank you dinner with other council members on Friday evening. We're sure Steve's 50th year will be a bit of a blur, especially if there are no other nominations for the position of Commodore at the forthcoming AGM! Happy birthday! |
Sunday started off very pleasant, with a southerly stream of wind running down the far shore. But the various sailors that turned up started to talk it up with mention of the gales that are forecast to come in overnight. Sure enough, the wind did start to swing more to the west allowing Sale Fell to cast a shadow over what was to be a key part of the course. With no driver for the Bates, OD Roy Blackburn was easily persuaded to set the start from the race office, but it meant using 9 as a mark to windward of the start line - not good news, especially with that wind shadow. Of course the shadow persisted as the fleet worked their way across to 4. There were some good gusts to work with but there were lulls too. The beat back to 0 proved to be challenging and the downfall of all the single handers as the shifting gusts resulted in several capsizes. The RS200 and RS400 had that extra bit of weight on board that gave them a better chance of staying upright, and they did (but only just). When the handicaps were calculated William and Lesley were six seconds/lap ahead of Tim Knowles to win their final race of the season together
What will the afternoon hold? Well actually not a lot. The breeze continued to fill in, and the warmth of the clubhouse seemed too good to leave behind so everyone packed up for an early finish rather than venture back on to the water.
The results have been corrected for race 2, in which a guest helm actually won, rather than Martin Wright as previously listed. The effect of this is that Tim is now in pole position, and no-one can catch him.
The personal handicaps are causing the usual upsets! Mike Fairlamb led the first race by miles and miles but came 2nd last once the handicaps were calculated. The weather was much improved on the gales suffered in the district yesterday, and the lasers all used full rigs, but there was still the odd capsize - Alan Nicholson, Paul Burnell, and Mike Fairlamb to name but a few.
Check out this memory from Bass Week - or the larger file for those on broadband
The clocks have changed, bonfire night's over, the night's are colder (as is the lake!), November's here, it's Sunday only racing, and the final series of the season has started - the Winter Trophy.
Compared to the last few weeks, there was a good breeze - enough for Roy and Kayla to crash and burn, but then so did Alan Nicholson in his Vario, and John and Joan Hardie in their RS200.
Rich has been out snapping again and uploaded a few pics of the day (well about 600!). Click here to see his handywork.
The results for the series are calculated on a personal handicap basis so those that haven't sailed for a while tend to have a beneficial handicap at first, but the system will catch up with them!

We held our annual bonfire night social, which, with a little help from all those attending was as spectacular as ever. About 50 members and guests came along with display fireworks which were all set off under the careful supervision of the Nicholson family (with the help of Martin the arsonist?!). Following last year, Dave couldn't hear for a week so Pauline advised him to wear earplugs. Word is he is enjoying the silence so much he's going to keep them in!!!
Kayla and Gary manned the galley and provided hot dogs, burgers and toffee apples (sponsored by a local dentist?)
Problem is, not sure whether we're relating to Mark or his caravan!
