50th Anniversary Celebrations
The Commodore and each of the four Club Trustees donated a trophy for Saturday's racing. The Trustees each had to take over the race management for one of the weekends racing. Although the forecast was for wind and rain, over 30 boats took to the water over the weekend. Saturday racing was a two race series, sailed in fleets. Some excellent racing was held in brisk, but steady, winds.
Sunday’s racing was again a two race series comprising a fleet handicap race in the morning, in which all the boats start together and their finishing time is corrected on a handicap basis according to the class of boat sailed. The course took the boats on a three mile beat to the Southern end of the lake which meant they were able to enjoy some exciting spinnaker legs on the way back up the lake. A Moth, sailed by Doug Pybus from Queen Mary Sailing Club, which lead the race from the start and, despite not being certain of the course, won the race by 32 seconds on handicap.
The afternoon race was a pursuit race in which the slower fleets set off first and are chased by the faster ones. As the winds eased and swung around to the East and North during the middle 60 minutes of the race no one was able to catch the leading GPs. However, this lead to a very close overall result where The Moth, and a GP, sailed by Robin Dawson (Carlisle) and Phil Smith (Harrington) each had equal points. As Robin had the better result in the last race he won the series and the Paul Carruthers Memorial Trophy, donated and presented by his widow Florence.
After the prizegiving, GP14 Association Secretary Graham Knox thanked the Club for being a longstanding ally of the Association which was celebrating its own 50th anniversary this year.

Sunday's racing started with a fleet handicap race in the morning that took the main fleets on a three mile beat, in a force 3/4, to the Southern end of the lake. Despite not remembering the course, the Moth won the race with 32 seconds to spare! The afternoon race was held on a pursuit basis. Unfortunately the winds faed and swung during the middle of the race and not many boats were able to catch the GPs that set off first. However, after 75 minutes the Moth was only a boat length behind gaining a valuable place that would have won him the series. The two races were combined to determine the winner of the Paul Carruthers Memorial Trophy, his widow Florence donated and presented the trophy to Robin Dawson and Phil Smith.
